Mother injured riding
son’s new motorcycle
Mrs. Meverlene D. McGhee,
34, of North Second street, was
injured Saturday afternoon in a
motorcycle accident at East
Tinsley and North Second
streets.
Griffin Police said Mrs.
McGhee was trying out her
son’s new motorcycle and at
tempted to drive it between a
stopped car and the curb. She
didn’t make it and hit the rear
side of the car.
She was carried to the Griffin-
Spalding Hospital emergency
room and treated for burns and
cuts on her leg.
Charles H. Daniel, 28, of 611
Lane street, the driver of the
car, said he had stopped for a
stop sign when the accident
occurred.
Three Zebulon residents were
injured Friday in a collision of
two pickup trucks at the Griffin
By-Pass and the Zebulon road
intersection.
George Thomas Flournoy, 70,
of Box 101, Zebulon, and George

Elizabeth Dunn, all were ad
mitted to the Griffin-Spalding
Hospital with injuries. The
Flournoys have been dismissed
and Mrs. Dunn was reported in
good condition today.

State Patrol expands
its drunk drive unit
ATLANTA (UPI)-The State
Patrol said today its special
drunk driving unit was expand
ing its coverage from Cobb
County to include Bartow and
Cherokee counties.
Mrs. Freeman
retires here
Mrs. Ruby Freeman has
retired at American Mills,
Griffin Plant. Mrs. Freeman
came to work in July, 1954, and
was assigned a flat lock
machine. She continued in this
assignment until she retired.
She lives with her husband,
Mr. Luvin Freeman at Route
Two, Orchard Hill. Mr. Free
man retired several years ago.
They have eight children, and 17
grandchildren living in
Georgia.
Friends and co-workers
served a lunch and gave gifts to
Mrs. Freeman. A fishing
spinner was given also.
Mrs. Freeman said she will
rest for a while then spend her
time fishing and visiting
children and grandchildren.
Mrs. Freeman hopes to give
more of her time to her church
work. They are members at
Rehoboth Baptist Church.
Shot in hip
Mrs. Mary Crawley of 1030
Ray street, remained in fair
condition today at the Griffin-
Spalding Hospital with gunshot
wounds she suffered late Satur
day afternoon.
Griffin Police said they
received a report around 5:30
p.m. that a shooting victim was
being treated at the hospital.
They said that Mrs. Crawley
was shot while she and her hus
band, Charles Crawley, were
struggling over a gun during an
argument. She was wounded in
the right hip.
The shooting was termed
accidental.
A spokesman for the Depart
ment of Public Safety said
there had been a “bad problem
with driving under the influ
ence” of alcohol in the Carters
ville-Canton area.
He said also visitor traffic in
the Lake Allatoona area was
increasing and the patrol had to
assign extra manpower in Cum
ming due to the trials of four
men for the murder of two For
syth County deputies.
The spokesman said that
would leave about five or six
officers of the special 18-man
unit on duty in Cobb but it
couldn’t be helped.
The unit, formed to crack
down on drunk driving by con
centrating on a certain area,
made 1,101 arrests in Cobb, in
cluding 273 for drunk driving,
in March compared to 474 and
88 drunk driving in the same
month a year ago.
Griffin Tech
selects
‘road scholars’
Griffin Tech has picked its
“road scholars” for 1972. These
boys will represent Griffin Tech
in this year’s Plymouth Trouble
Shooting contest, according to
L. Roy Jones, Sr., and Walter L.
Mason, automotive shop in
structor at the school.
Competing for Griffin Tech
will be Ronald D. Knowles of
Route three, Fayetteville and
Douglas C. Wilson of Route two,
Stockbridge.
The team will be sponsored by
Southern Chrysler Plymouth.
The contest will be held Apr. 20,
at Atlanta Tech, at 10:30 a.m.
The winning team in the local
contest will be sent to In
dianapolis in June to compete
against other top “trouble
diooters" from all parts of the
country in the National
Championship finals.

Miss Ogletree
Miss Frances Miriam
Ogletree of 457 Forsyth street,
Barnesville, died Saturday
morning in the Upson County
Hospital where she had been a
patient for three weeks.
Miss Ogletree was a native of
Barnesville and served in the
Women’s Auxiliary Corps
during World War Two. She had
resided in Marietta for 25 years
where she was employed as
secretary at Lockheed until she
returned to Barnesville to make
her home eight months ago.
Miss Ogletree was a member of
the First Baptist Church.
She is survived by three
brothers, Clay Ogletree, Frank
Ogletree, both of Barnesville
and Julian Ogletree of Mc-
Comb, Miss.; and a sister, Mrs.
Clarence Suggs of Marietta.
Funeral services were con
ducted Sunday afternoon at 4
o’clock from the First Baptist
Church. The Rev. Brantley
Harwell officiated and burial
was in Greenwood cemetery.

Mrs. Hay
Mrs. Mae Gunnells Hay, 65,
widow of Oscar Hay of Flovilla,
died Saturday evening at the
Westbury Medical Care Home
in Jenkinsburg after being a
patient there for the past 23
months. She had been in
declining health for several
years.
Mrs. Hay was born in Jasper
County, daughter of the late Sid
Gunnells and the late Irene
Hattaway Gunnells, both of
Jasper County. She was a
member of the Sandy Greek
Primitive Baptist Church.
She is survived by a sister,
Mrs. Raymond T. Smith of
Flovilla; a brother, William T.
Gunnells of Fayetteville, N.C.,
three nieces and two nephews.
Funeral services were con
ducted this afternoon at 2:30
o’clock from the chapel of
Haisten Funeral Home in
Jackson. Elder Paul Mann and
Elder Elzy Spier officiated and
burial was in Sandy Creek
cemetery. Haisten Funeral
Home of Jackson was incharge
of plans.
Mr. Butts, Jr.
Funeral services for Mr.
Onnie Butts, Jr., were con
ducted this afternoon at 3:30
o’clock from the Nazarene
Church in Macon. Burial will be
in Memorial Garden in Macon.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs.
Louise Williford Butts, formerly
of Fayetteville; two daughters,
Mrs. Elizabeth Walker and Miss
Glenda Butts of Macon; two
sons, Thomas Butts and Rodney
Butts of Macon; father Onnie
Butts, Sr., of Milledgeville; five
sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Lamb,
Mrs. Katie Brantley of
Milledgeville, Mrs. Susie
Ogletree, Mrs. Mary Morris of
Griffin and Miss Ora Butts of
Macon; two brothers, Roy Butts
of Pensacola, Fla., and Robert
Butts of Milledgeville.

Mrs. Thompson
Mrs. Ethel Porter Thompson,
91, of Atlanta died Saturday
night in the Beverly Manor
Convalescence Home in
Atlanta.
Mrs. Thompson was born in
Spalding County and had made
her home in Atlanta for 22
years. She was a retired school
teacher.
She is survived by two
daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth
Cangelosi of Memphis, Tenn.,
and Mrs. Edwina Dawson of
Atlanta; a son, Milton Thomp
son of Washington, D.C.; and a
brother, I. R. Porter of
Royston; and one grandson.
Funeral plans will be an
nounced by McDonald Chapel.
Mr. Scott
Mr. Charles William Scott, 24,
died early Sunday in Rich
mond, Va., where he had
resided for the past eight
months.
Mr. Scott was a native of
Griffin, son of Mrs. Dale Harris
of Richmond and the late
Chester B. Scott. He was em
ployed in Richmond as
associate manager of 7-11
Grocery Store.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Ginger Williams Scott; a
son, Craig Scott of Griffin;
mother, Mrs. Dale Anderson
Harris of Richmond, Va.; a
brother, Jernes L. Scott of
Griffin and a sister, Mrs. Peggy
Dale Bonner of Americus.
The body will arrive in Griffin
Tuesday afternoon and will
remain at Haisten Funeral
Home. Graveside services will
be conducted Wednesday
morning at 11 o’clock from the
Mt. Carmel United Methodist
Church cemetery in Henry
County. The Rev. U. D.
Singleton will officiate.
Mr. Persons
Mr. Eddie B. Persons, 62, of
Jonesboro, formerly of Fayette
County, died at the Clayton
County Hospital in Jonesboro
Sunday afternoon.
He was the son of Mrs. Viola
Persons.

Mr. James Kendrick, 30, of
Belglade, Fla., formerly of
Molena, died Saturday.

Southern Bell in Griffin will
expand its central office
building at South Hill and
Poplar streets in a project that
will cost them more than than a
million dollars.
Albert Harrell, manager of
Southern Bell in Griffin, said
details of the proposal would be
announced.
Gay, Ga. man
killed in wreck
C. W. Foster, of Route One,
Gay, Ga., was killed Sunday
evening in an auto accident
about 1.2 miles west of
Williamson on highway 362.
The 1970 convertible car he
was driving was demolished.
State Patrol officials at the
Thomaston Post said that the
Foster car was traveling at a
high rate of speed, crossed the
center line and struck a car
driven by Enoch Gear, Jr., 24,
of Atlanta.
Gear and the passengers in
his car were only shaken up.
S9O taken
from under
refrigerator
G. L. Ballew, manager of the
Grand Apartments, 102 North
Expressway, reported to police
that someone stole S9O he had
hidden under a refirgerator. He
said he put the money there
Thursday and when he went to
get it Sunday, it was gone.
Griffin Police received a
report of another tape player
theft from a car over the week
end.
David Wimbush of Route
Four, said he left his locked car
parked on the lot at Kentucky
Fried Chicken on Solomon
street. Someone broke a vent
window and took the tape
player. The player was valued
at $69. Damage to the window
was set at $25.
Vandals broke a window out
at Holsey Smith Garage on the
Old Atlanta road. Police said
someone threw a rock through a
front window early Sunday
morning.
Dog roundup
under way
City officials said the annual
dog round-up is in full swing and
that several hundred stray dogs
already have been picked up.
The dog pound on North Hill
street will be open from 8-9 a.m.
and from 3-4 p.m. Monday
through Friday to enable
Griffinites to claim their pets in
case they have been picked up.
The animals will be kept five
days.
All dogs are being rounded up
that are not wearing a blue 1972
dog tag.
Animal Control Officer Clyde
Hicks is being assisted in the
round-up by an off-duty police
officer.

Foster vehicle left the highway,
travelled several hundred feet
and overturned.
Foster was dead on arrival at
the Griffin-Spalding County
Hospital.
He is survived by his wife,
