ATLANTA—The Atlanta Hawks named Richie Guerin general manager and announced the
search for a new coach would begin immediately. The announcement was made at a press
conference by Bill Putnam (r), president of the Oni group. Guerin (1) has been coach of the Hawks
for eight years. During six of the years he was a player-coach. (UPI)

Hawks seek coach

ATLANTA (UPI) - Richie
Guerin says he doesn’t believe
that his adjustment from coach
to general manager of the
Atlanta Hawks will be as tough
as the one he had to make
when he quit playing basket
ball.
“That was the one that was
really painful,” the nattily
dressed Guerin disclosed after
Monday’s announcement that
he was stepping up to the front
office. “After all, I had been
playing for about a quarter of a
century—the last 14 years in

the pros—and it was really
tough to get used to sitting on
the bench.”
Guerin’s new appointment
came as no surprise. Bill
Putnam, president of a co
liseum group which will be
operating both the Hawks and
Atlanta’s new NHL hockey
franchise, had said earlier that
he felt two men were needed to
fill the posts of general
manager and coach and that
Guerin would have to decide
which one he wanted.
“The decision wasn’t really
that difficult to make,” said the
39-year-old Guerin who, after
eight years at the Hawks helm,
was the dean of National
Basketball Association coaches.
“This was something that I’ve
been planning all along. It’s a
great opportunity.”
Although the Hawks were
only 36-46 in each of Guerin’s
last two years as head coach,
they won a playoff berth both
times and there appeared to be
no front-office dissatisfaction
with his coaching.
“My first job will be to find
my successor,” said Guerin.
“I’ve got a number of people in
mind as coach.
