Griffin Bears
nip Jonesboro
The Griffin Bears are just two
wins away from sewing up a 6-
AAA sub-region baseball
championship.
A victory over Newnan here
today would assure the Bears a
tie, and a victory Friday in
Thomaston would wrap up the
title.
Griffin moved closer to the
championship yesterday by
defeating Jonesboro 4-3 in eight
innings.
The winning run was balked

Marty Varnadoe went the
distance to pick up his fourth
win. He allowed only four hits,
struck out five and walked
three.

Joe Aamatlt wants

math is the No. 1 quarterback
around today. That’s pretty
well established.
He isn’t the only one who
says so, most everybody else in
pro football says so, and that’s
more important.
Being the No. 1 quarterback
in the game is the same thing
as being the No. 1 player in the
game, and that being the case,
Joe Namath, understandably
enough, would like to become
owner of the No. 1 contract.
lawyers on both sides are
working on the extension of his
contract with the New York
Jets right now and by the time
they’re finished it could turn
out to be the richest one any
football player has ever signed.
Joe Namath, from what I
hear, could wind up signing a
new term contract which will
bring him a million bucks or
very close to it.
More Than One Year
Term contract means more
than one year. In this case,
part of the money would be
paid Namath while he’s still
playing and the remainder
deferred until when he’s
through. Stan Musial and Ted
Williams had contracts like that
when they were playing.
James Walsh, Namath’s at
torney, merely says:
“I think Joe would like to be
paid what he’s worth. What
he’s worth is difficult to
determine.”
Namath’s knees very likely
will result in an “if” clause
being included in the contract.
That means the sum agreed
upon would be contingent on
Namath’s staying healthy and
continuing to play.
While on the subject of
money, this is as good a place
to dear up some of the
confusion over a few contracts
in other sports.

Tech scored two unearned

Then Dick Sneed hit a sacri

Sorrow, who came on in re

up six hits, was the loser.
Tech is now 13-8 on the sea

The Knicks began jelling
during their playoff victories
over Baltimore and Boston.
They started doing things
exceptionally well together, like
thinking together, playing brai
ny defense, making sound play

shots. They’re playing smart
basketball now, not dumb
basketball, and I think they’re
going to give a fine account of
themselves but when it’s all

Here is a conversation which
took place between a ballplayer
and a general manager during
the strike:
“Any chance of getting an
advance on my salary?”
“What salary? You don’t get
paid when you strike.”
“I know it, but I thought I
could get an advance anyway.”
“Why don’t you call up
Marvin Miller and ask him for
an advance?”
“He said he isn’t taking any
salary during the strike either.”
“Well, I’d suggest you call
him anyway. He may still be on
expense account.”

ATLANTA—The scoreboard behind Atlanta pitcher, Phil Niekro, tells the happy story as Niekro
got his first win of the season, a 9-3 victory over St Louis. Niekro had plenty of help led by a pair of
two run homers by Hank Aaron and Earl Williams. (UPI)
Niekro finally
breaks the ice
By DAVID MOFFIT
UPI Sports Writer
ATLANTA (UPI)-Phil Niek
ro doesn’t like to show off his
knuckleball any more than he
absolutely has to.
“Batters around the league
aren’t used to the knuckleball,”
the Atlanta Braves right-hander
explained. “They never see it
except when I pitch it; oh,
maybe for an inning now and
then when Hoyt Wilhelm
(Dodgers) is in there.
“That’s why, when you are
throwing it and it’s doing
something, the batters are
getting themselves out. They
psych themselves a bit.”
That’s why, when he found
himself with a six-run lead
after two innings, Niekro didn’t
use his knuckler as often as
usual Tuesday night while
pitching the Braves to a 9-3
victory over the St. Louis
Cardinals.
“The way I figure it,” said
Niekro, “I try to keep men off
the base when I’ve got a six
run lead. If they want to get
on, they’ll have to hit to do it.
Why take a chance with a lead
like that?”
However, as Niekro then
pointed out, he still had the
knuckler when he needed it —
and it got him out of a couple
cf jams Tuesday night.
In picking up his first victory
of the season (he’d lost two),
the 33-year-old Braves veteran
struck out five and walked none
—but was tagged for nine hits,
including the Cardinals’ first
homer this season.
“I never thought that ball
was out of here,” Niekro said
of the high fly by Ted Simmons
which barely cleared the right
field fence in the seventh
inning. “I thought I could catch
it,” added right fielder Ralph
Garr.
But Garr will never know for
sure. He hit his head on the top
of the fence when he started his
leap.
‘‘Nobody knows,” said
Braves’ Manager Luman Har
ris. “But I’m convinced he’d
have had it if he hadn’t
rammed that fence with his
head.”
Except for being the Cards’
first, the home run didn’t make
that much difference. Hank
Aaron and Earl Williams
already had hit two-run homers
for the Braves and when the
snoke cleared, Atlanta, which
lost seven of its first eight
games, had a three-game
winning streak.
For Aaron, who had only one
single his first 22 at bats, the
homer was his third in three
nights and raised his career
total to 642. That’s still 72
behind Babe Ruth on the all
time home run list —but it’s
only four behind Willie Mays
who is second on that list.
“That so?” asked Aaron
when he learned Mays hasn’t
hit a home run so far this
season. “I reckon I’m catching
up.”
Niekro, who won 23 games in
1969 but only 12 and 15 the two
years since, feels his knucklers
is better now than it has been
in several years.
He proved his last Wednesday
when, despite taking a loss, he
held the Dodgers to three hits
(with seven strike outs and no
walks) in eight innings.
“That was a 1-0 game for the
eight innings I was in there,”
Niekro recalled. “My knuckler
is better this year. I’m not
aiming it. I’m letting it go. I’m
throwing it harder and it’s
breaking harder.
“Hoyt Wilhelm and I used to
talk about the knuckleball when
he was with the Braves. We
agreed that the secret is
getting the feel of the
knuckleball in your fingertips. I
have that feel now.”
The resurgence of Phil
Niekro came at a good time for
the Braves. They have been
forced to put their ace relief
pitcher, Cecil Upshaw, on the
disabled list until May 11
because of a sore shoulder.
The Braves and Cardinals
conclude their two-game series
here tonight with Ron Reed (1-
1) pitching against Rick Wise
(0-1). Then to Pittsburgh,
Chicago and St. Louis.
