turns up in Griffin
Police said that a stolen

up in Griffin yesterday af
ternoon. They warned mer

robberies, in this section of the
state. Until yesterday, none had
been cashed in Griffin.
Most of them were made out
for $l5O and payable to a Clara
Harris. The name Richard
Harris was used as the pur
chaser.
Two Fat Valley State College
students have been arrested in
connection with the Griffin
robberies. Robert L. Brown, 25,
was charged with armed rob
bery. His wife, who gave her
name as Lutrell Studstill, 21,
was charged with forgery when
die attempted to cash one of
the money orders at a bank in
Covington.
The manager of K-Way Super
•Market on Memorial drive
reported to police that after
reading yesterday’s article in
the Griffin Daily News about
the money orders, he checked
and found that he had cashed
one.

Fishing for deer?
LAROCHE, France (UPI)—
Worker Louis Sarrazin was
fishing in the Atlantic Ocean
when he felt a pull on his line
and reeled in a deer.
Sarrazin and his son pulled
the exhausted animal into their
boat and with the aid of
firemen transported him to a
forest to set him free. The
animal apparently jumped into
the sea to escape hunters,
fireman said.

are going
to C of C meet
Three representatives of the
Griffin Chamber will attend the
60th annual meeting of the
Chamber of Commerce of the
United States in Washington,
D.C. April 30-May 2.
They are Executive Vice
President Dewitt Simonton, Jr.,
Administrative Assistant
Mildred Sawyer and South
eastern Women’s Division
Treasurer Mildred Burnett.
Convention headquarters will
be the Washington Hilton with
programs planned in Constitu
tion Hall and at the Kennedy
Center for the Performing Arts.
The convention will open Sun
day afternoon with a reception
and open house in the Hall of
Flags in the National Chamber
Building.
Mrs. Sawyer, Mrs. Burnett
and Mr. Simonton will be guests
at the congressional reception
and dinner Monday night given
by members of Georgia’s con
gressional delegation.

First Suez Canal
The first Suez Canal was
dug almost 4,000 years ago
from the Nile Delta to a
point on the Red Sea near
the present port of Suez. It
was abandoned and restored
periodically until the Bth cen
tury, when it fell into final
disuse.
| Deaths-Funerals
Mr. Stephens
Mr. Edgar Ralph Stephens,
61, of 1613 Nath Hill street died
this maning at the Griffin-
Spalding Hospital. Mr. Stephens
had been ill for nine months and
seriously ill at the hospital for
the past 15 days.
He owned and operated
Ralph’s Service Station on
North Hill Street extension. A
native of Walton County Mr.
Stephens was the son of the late
John W. Stephens and the late
Nannie Spence Stephens. He
was a member of Griffin Lodge
413 of Masons and the Shriners.
Survivors include his wife,
Mrs. Elizabeth Williams
Stephens; a daughter, Miss
June Stephens and a sister,
Mrs. Sara McGuffey.
He was a veteran of World
War Two where he served for
six years in the U.S. Marine as a
member of the Ist Division,
seeing action in the South
Pacific theater.
Funeral services will be
conducted Friday afternoon at 3
o’clock from Haisten’s chapel.
The Rev. John R. Huggins and
the Rev. A. G. Van Landingham
will officiate and burial will be
in Griffin Memorial Gardens.
Masons will be in charge of
graveside services. Haisten
Funeral Home of Griffin is in
charge of plans.
Mr. Hicks
Funeral services for Mr.
Aquinaldo “Pete” Hicks of 427
Washington street will be
conducted at St. Phillips AME
Church, at 1 o’clock Friday
afternoon. The Rev. A. G.
Conyers will officiate and burial
will be in Rest Haven cemetery.
The body will lie in state at the
church from 12 noon until the
funeral hour.
Mr. Hicks was a lifelong
resident of Griffin. He died
Sunday at the Griffin-Spalding
Hospital.
Survivors include several
cousins Mrs. Bertha Brown,
Mrs. Flossie Evans, Robert
Dickerson, Mrs. Annie Bell
Taylor, Mrs. Margaret Kendall,
all of Griffin.
Millers Funeral Home was in
charge of plans.
Clendening Infant
Funera services for the infant
daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Marshall Clendening of Atlanta
were conducted this afternoon
from the graveside in Oak Hill
cemetery at 2 o’clock. The Rev.
Claude E. Johnson officiated.
Haisten Funeral Home was in
charge of plans.

Funeral services for Mr.
Andrew Pate Williams, 20, of
Daytona Beach, Fla., were
conducted this afternoon at 2:30
o’clock from the Mt. Calvary
Baptist Church in Milner. The
Rev. H. A. Hays, pastor, and the
Rev. A. G. Glanton, officiated
and burial was in the church
cemetery.
His survivors include his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Willie
Williams; a sister, Mrs.
Geraldine Barkley; three
brothers, Willie James
Williams, Rudolph Williams
and Douglas Keith Williams, all
of Griffin.
McDowell United Funeral
Home was in charge of plans.
Woman accused
of selling
porno here
A 22-year-old College Park
woman was arrested here
yesterday and charged with
selling and distributing obscene
materials.
Mrs. Jody Alane Downey, 22,
of 1416 Village Green drive,
College Park, was arrested,
yesterday afternoon at a local
motel. She had in her possession
a brief case containing 14 200-
foot reels of Bmm color film
which was priced at SSO per
reel, police said.
Passing as purchasers,
Griffin police detectives bought
all 14 reels from her for S2BO.
They then placed her under
arrest.
Police said the woman is
originally from Nath Carolina.
She told them she is divorced ,
and has a small son she left f
yesterday in a Forest Park day
nursery.
She was released from the
Spalding County jail under SSOO I
bond.
