Billy Martin
is beaming
By VITO STELLINO
UPI Sports Writer
Billy Martin, who announced
last December when Frank
Robinson was traded that the
Tigers were going to win the
pennant, is beaming now with
the Tigers leading their division
by a game while Baltimore is
mired in a four-game losing
streak.
After the Detroit beat Texas,
8-1, on Joe Coleman’s three
hitter Wednesday night, Martin
said, “I’ve said all along that I
think we can win the whole
thing. We should win 10 or 15
more this year and that’s all
we need.”
Weaver, who hopes to pilot
the Orioles to 100 victories for
the fourth straight season,
figures his team is only in a
temporary slump. “Hitting is

Weaver wasn’t too thrilled
that the Orioles’ 5-3 loss to
Kansas City was called by rain
in the sixth inning. “I’d like to
know why the game was
called,” he said.
Lemon Has the Answer
Kansas City Manager Jim
Lemon had the answer.
“What’s he mad about?”
Lemon asked. “It’s been
raining an hour. “Most of the
time it was only drizzling but
the game was called after a 59-
minute delay when it started
raining hard.
Detroit gave Coleman all the
support he needed with a five-
run fifth inning that featured
Aurelio Rodriguez’ two-run
single, Gates Brown’s run
scoring single and Bill Free
han’s two-run double.
Kansas City battered Dave
McNally for five runs in the
fifth inning just before the rain
came. The Orioles came back
with three in the top of the
sxth and had a runner on
second with two out when the
rain came.
In the other American
League games, New York

nipped Boston,-1, California
edged Milwaukee,-!,nd Chicago

Intentional walk
haunts the Cubs
By JOE CARNICELLI
UPI Sports Writer
A controversial intentional
walk was Pete Reiser’s undoing
Wednesday night as the Chica
go Cubs’ interim manager
watched his dub drop a 5-4
decision to the Houston Astros,
the Cubs’ eight straight loss.
The score was tied at 4-4 in
the bottom of the 10th inning
when Lee May was walked
intentionally with two out and
no one on. Bob Watson, hitless
in 11 previous at bats in the
series, then doubled to score
May with the winning run and
extend the Astros’ winning
streak to nine games.
May’s three homers in the
last three games prompted
Reiser’s actions. “He’d hit
three mistakes and he wasn’t
going to hit a fourth one,”
Reiser explained. “I thought it
was going to be caught. If the
relay throw didn’t hit the
mound, he’d be out at the plate.
I’d do it over again. I’m not
afraid to gamble. It’s a shame

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (UPI)
—Richard Petty, who made
more than a million dollars
driving Plymouths, may be
driving his last Plymouth
Sunday when he races in the
Virginia 500 at the Martinsville

Petty announced earlier he
was abandoning his blue and

huge Talladega Raceway in
Alabama.
Petty couldn’t have picked a
better track for his Plymouth

times and is the odds-on
favorite in Sunday’s $45,000
event.
Bobby Isaac of Catawba,

challenger on the half-mile
oval. Isaac drives a Dodge.
Bobby Allison, Petty’s old

Georgia State
baseball
in trouble
ATLANTA (UPI) -The Geor
gia State University baseball
team has other problems be
sides the fact they have lost all
their games this season— 22 in
a row.
Assistant coach Tommy Bar
ber says the fact the team has
a smaller budget than the uni
versity rifle team and the
rather depressing prospect of
no beam being fielded next
year also could have an effect
on the team’s performance.
State this year has managed
to lose 19-8 to Kentucky, after
leading 7-0. The team’s latest
loss, 8-7 to Atlanta Baptist Col
lege, came after loading the
bases in the 9th inning with no
outs and then failing to score.
Barber says the team could
get a job in the major leagues
as caretakers for a baseball
diamond because it has no
home field and must use city
facilities, which it takes care of
in exchange for playing on it.
