TIME OF THE ESSENCE
TIPTON, England (UPI)-
Wendy Williams, 14, has
written the British military
hospital in Hong Kong to find
out what time of day she was
bom there in 1957.
Unless it was early morning
she cannot leave school and go
to work for two more years.
British law says children born
on or after Sept. 1, 1957 must
stay in school until they are 16.
It was Sept, 1, 1957 in Hong
Kong .when Wendy was born.
But, her parents tell her, it was
so early in the morning it
probably was still Aug. 31 in
Britain. Hong Kong time is nine
hours ahead of British time.

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Georgia’s Senior Senator Herman Talmadge, number two man
on the Senate Committee on Veteran Affairs, has thrown his support behind the National Com
mittee—Jobs for Veterans, which seeks to improve employment and training opportunities for
all former servicemen.
Calling the veteran reemployment issue “one of the most critical issues in the economy
today,” Sen. Talmadge points out that returning veterans represent a cross section of America,
but chiefly are highly employable and eager to catch up with their careers.
“America cannot afford a generation of forgotten men—the unemployed veterans who have
done a job for their country, but whose country can find no jobs for them. Their number has
grown as the war in Viet Nam has wound down,” said Sen. Talmadge.
Over 300,000 Viet Nam veterans, aged 20-29, remain jobless today. In addition, their
unemployment rate has been higher than that for their counterparts who did not serve.
“Finding jobs for veterans is the first order of business,” continued Sen. Talmadge. “But it
is not something that can be left entirely to government. Jobs are basically a local affair—local
because that’s where the jobs are, not only in the big companies, but in our medium-sized •
businesses and small organizations as well.”
STOL aircraft
MUL aircratt can
help clogged airports
By FRANK MACOMBER
Military-Aerospace Writer
Copley News Service
Most American taxpayers
forget that the National Aero
nautics and Space Administra
tion is just as concerned with
aviation as it is with outer
space.
NASA, for instance, has been
working since the early 1950 s
on the development of a short
haul passenger aircraft with
flight characteristics to over
come air and noise pollution
plus airport and air corridor
congestion.
Proof that NASA’s course has
been correct is evidenced by
the flood of damage lawsuits
being filed by homeowners and
business operators around the
big airports, charging anything
from noise and air pollution to
encroachment and land bor
dering on terminals.
One answer, NASA engineers
believe, is STOL (short takeoff
and landing).
Half a dozen aerospace firms
feel the same way about it and
for years have been developing
their own versions of the quick
getaway airliner.
STOL has been in the techni
cal literature for two decades,
but the people at NASA who la
bor over drafting tables and
peer through portholes onto
wind tunnels long have feared
the acronym is misleading to
the public.
For example, there is no
yardstick to measure how short
is short enough to make the
STOL airliner practical enough
to help cut airport density, re
duce the problems of over
crowded air corridors and pre
vent further airport expansion.
NASA engineers concede the

UMPIRE DISAPPEARS
SALEM, Ore. (UPI)-The
umpire disappeared immediate
ly after a Little League
baseball game even though no
one objected to his calls.
State police said the missing
umpire was Larry Lee Lerch,
25, an inmate of the Oregon
State Penitentiary. He was
nearing the end of the second
year of a three-year sentence
for forgery from Multnomah
County.
Lerch had been permitted to
leave the prison to serve as
umpire for the Wednesday
night game.
WRONG FILE
LONDON (UPI)-A man
Thursday walked into the
offices of Dateline, a firm
which matches possible social
partners by computer, and
snatched a file containing the
records of 1,000 former clients.
Dateline officials said the
thief would find no juicy
reading.
“These are former clients,
and we destroy more personal
details from the records as
soon as a client comes off the
books. Besides, many have
since married,” the company
said.

S stands for short, but also
means much more, like: slow,
steep, silent, sanitary, safe, se
lective and serene.
Can all these characteristics
be built into an airplane? NASA
says the answer is yes.
Slow, steep, safe and selec
tive apply to flight procedures
in maneuvering aircraft in and
out of airports. Slow ap
proaches and climbouts allow
the pilot to perform tight ma
neuvers for precise terminal
control and to avoid overflying
residential communities.
The latter custom is a chief
target of most damage suits
filed against airports in Los
Angeles, Chicago, New York,
Philadelphia and Boston.
Steep descents and ascents
get planes in and out of airports
without the long, low, head-on
flight paths and thus reduce the
time airport neighbors would
be exposed to annoying jet
noise.
Sanitary, which also trans
lates smokeless, refers to
cleaner-burning engines which
will reduce both visible and in
visible jet emissions of today’s
big airliners.
I*o Bacteria cultures? Rust on an
WnCIT IS IT • aging auto? Sunrise through fog,
above, and bombs away, below? Good questions, but
not even close. Camera exposures taken in far ultra
violet light on the Apollo 16 moon mission produced
these surrealistic NASA photos of, above, the geocoro
noa, a halo of low-density hydrogen surrounding the
earth, and, below, the Magellanic Cloud, a neighboring
galaxy to our own but visible only from southern lati
tudes. Registered are emissions of very hot stars and
patches of hydrogen in the 100 billion-star galaxy.

Silent simply means quieter
engines than those which power
modern jetliners. The “softer”,
engine will come from quieter
propulsion using low-jet veloc
ities, quieter bypass fans,
acoustic treatment and noise
shielding. It will relieve the
eardrums of passengers and.
the public alike, according t&
NASA engineers.
Finally, serene is for that
hopefully happy state of mind
passengers would enjoy when
riding in an airplane that per
forms or has all of these
sterling qualities in flight or at
airports without sacrificing the
speed, smoothness and comfort
of today’s high altitude, fan-jet
airliners.
This idyllic airplane isn’t
ready for the public yet, but it
is on the way and eventually
will replace the big airliners on
short-haul routes between
cities, for example, in the U.S.
Northeast Corridor or between
New York, Washington, D.C.,
and Chicago.
The principle of STOL is not
complicated. Its power plants
simply lift the plane up and out
at an angle before they carry it
forward horizontally.
