Cubs, Braves
split pair
By DAVID MOFFIT
UPI Sports Writer
ATLANTA (UPI)-That Fer
gie Jenkins is a model of
consistency.
Here we are, just about at
the halfway mark of the 1972
baseball campaign, and the big
Chicago Cubs righthander is
halfway along in his bid for a
sixth straight 20-win season.
Jenkins, who won 20-20-21-22-
24 the past five years, picked
up win No. 10 Wednesday night
with a 4-1 decision over the
Atlanta Braves —and it was a
typical Ferguson Jenkins per
formance.
The Braves got eight hits but
Jenkins wound up facing only
five batters over the minimum
and retired the last 10 in a row
to hike his record to 10-7 with
his 14th complete game in 19
starts.
“I just sort of take it for
granted that when they give me
the ball they expect me to stick
it out for nine innings,” said
the 6-foot-5, 205-pound Cana-

Jenkins’ pitching is about all
Cubs Manager I>eo Durocher
has had to smile about during
this visit to Atlanta.
Knuckleballer Phil Niekro,
going the distance for the ninth
time in 18 starts, beat the Cubs,
3-2, with a six-hitter in the
nightcap of Wednesday’s dou
bleheader and Ron Reed beat
them, 5-1, with a seven-hitter
the previous night.
But the game that made Leo
the most upset was a Tuesday
night game that doesn’t even
count in the won-loss columns.
That was the second game of
Tuesday’s scheduled twin bill, a
game that ended in a 3-3 tie
when it was rained out in the
top of the eighth.
Durocher had filed a protest
(overruled) charging the Atlan
ta ground crew was derelict in
not getting the infield tarpaulin
down.
Never mind that the wind
was shipping so hard the 15-
man crew couldn’t handle the
tarp or that the rain didn’t let up
for a couple of hours.
All Leo was concerned about
was that the Cubs had men at
third and first with no outs
when the rain hit and never got
a chance to deliver a knockout
punch.
Leo led some folks to believe
the Cubs would refuse to play
the makeup game Wednesday
and still sulking, refused to
reveal his lineups until minutes
before the start of both games.
Rookie righthander Ron
Schueler out-pitched Jenkins
the first seven innings of the
first game. Schueler had a no
hitter going through 5 2-3
innings and a three-hit shutout
through seven but the Cubs
erupted for four runs in the
eighth.
Niekro, now 8-7, also had a
three-hit shutout going for
seven innings in the second
game. After Billy Williams
made it 3-2 by leading off the
ninth with his 16th homer,
Niekro struck out Joe Pepitone
and Ron Santo and then got
Carmen Fanzone to bounce out.
The Braves and Cubs com
plete their five-games-in-three
days series tonight with George
Stone (1-6) going against Bill
Hands (6-5).
Henry Aaron returned to
the Braves lineup in Wednes
day’s second game after
missing the other three because
of a bruised wrist and went 2-
for-4.
That raised Aaron’s average
to only .262 and the Braves out
■fielder explained that his
average has been suffering
because “everyone has me
thinking about hitting home
runs these days.”
Aaron currently has 17
homers for the season and 656
overall—sß behind Babe Ruth’s
record.
“It seems like everywhere I
go these days all people want to
talk about is my hitting home
runs,” Aaron said. “I try not to
think about it when I’m batting
but I keep finding myself
swinging for the fence.”

Pittsburgh whips
Houston, 6-4
By MARTIN LADER
UPI Sports Writer
Bob Robertson has been
receiving a lot of teasing over
his anemic batting average,
which stood at a limp .150 prior
to Wednesday night’s game at
Houston, but he provided the
game-w inning blow with a two
run homer in the fourth inning
as Pittsburgh whipped the
Astros, 6-4.
“I can’t really tell if I’m out
of my slump or not,” said
Robertson, who also homered in
a winning effort against the
Cubs on Sunday. “I just go day
to day.”
The victory enabled Pit
tsburgh to stretch its first-place
lead in the National League
East to games over the
New York Mets, whose sche
duled game with San Diego was
postponed by rain. Elsewhere,
Chicago and Atlanta split a
doubleheader, the Cubs taking
the opener, 4-1, and the Braves
winning the second game, 3-2,
and the Los Angeles Dodgers
beat the Montreal Expos, 7-3.
San Francisco at Philadelphia
also was postponed by rain
while St. I,ouis and Cincinnati
weren’t scheduled.
In the American League,
Baltimore edged the White Sox,
1- Boston blanked Minnesota,

Y astrzemski
terror of old
By GARY KALE
UPI Sports Writer
Suddenly, Carl Yastrzemski
has became the terror of old.
Not with the long ball, but with
well placed singles and doubles.
He went 3-for-4 Wednesday
night as he lifted his average to
.302. His double provided an
insurance run in Boston’s 2-0
victory over Minnesota that
extended the Red Sox’ winning
streak to six straight.
The Sox pitching staff
reached something of a miles
tone by posting five consecutive
complete game performances.
In other AL action, Baltimore
shut out Chicago, 1-0; Kansas
City beat Detroit, 8-2; New
York trounced Oakland, 4-1,
and California edged Milwauk
ee, 1-0. The Texas at Cleveland
game was rained out.
In the National League,
Pittsburgh defeated Houston, 6-
4; Los Angeles stopped Mon
treal, 7-3; and Atlanta whipped
Chicago, 3-2, after losing the
opener of a doubleheader, 4-1.
The San Diego at New York
and San Francisco at Philadel
phia games were postponed.
Boston scored the only run it
needed in the second inning
when Carlton Fisk doubled,
took third on Jim Perry’s wild
pitch and came in on Bob
Burda’s sacrifice fly. Yastrzem
ski's double in the eighth scored
Tommy Harper with an insur
ance run.

the first inning as he won his
ninth game. Wilbur Wood

Kansas City chased Detroit
ace Mickey Lolich in the sixth
inning with its second three-run
inning of the game. Fred Patek
scored twice and drove in a run
with a single to lead the
Royals’ attack and back Paul
Splittorff’s eighth victory in 12
decisions. Lolich suffered his
sixth loss against 13 wins.
Thurman Munson and Felipe

Yankee runs against Oakland.
Munson drove in a pair with his

the season. Steve Kline yielded

game. Ken Holtzman was
charged with his sixth loss in 17
