“Finding God’s Guidance” is
the topic of this week’s In
ternational Sunday School
lesson. Background scripture is
I Kings 18:9-18; John 16:7-15.
The Memory Selection is
“Make me to know thy ways, 0
Ixtrd; teach me thy paths, lead
me in thy truth, and teach me.”
(Psalms 25:4-5)
The background Scripture
tells the story of Elijah, the
prophet. He had become
dejected because the Children
of Israel had forsaken the Lord
and it seemed to the prophet
there were none left who did not
worship Baal, or some other
god, rather than the one true
God.
Elijah went up to a cave in the
mountain and prayed to God. A
great wind arose; there was a
fierce storm with fire (light
ning) and noise (thunder). Then
the storm moved away and
there was a calm and Elijah
heard a “still small voice.” He
ventured out of the cave and it
was then that God revived his
faith and hope, telling him that
there were some 7,000 persons
in Israel who remained true to
God and who had never wor
shipped Baal.
Now 7,000 persons was a
small part of the entire
population of Israel, but
knowing God’s power to use
faithful servants, Elijah must
have faced the future with great
faith and hope that “some of
these days” not only will that
7,000 of ancient days not wor
ship a false god but they will
worship the one and only True
and Living God.
As we studied the background
Scripture for this lesson we
were impressed with the fact
that Elijah, possibly frightened
by the noises of the great storm,
did not dare to come out of the
cave; but that once the storm
ceased, he ventured out and
then heard the small, quiet and
loving voice of his God.
No doubt Elijah faced the
future with increased faith and
hope following this experience.
And so it can be with us today.
Few of us will have, or have
had, an experience like that of
Paul, the Apostle, that day on
the road to Damascus. He met
God in a spectacular, thrilling,
awesome way. Probably his
first reaction to this experience
was that God had met him to
punish him. Later, however,
Paul found out differently.
And so it may be with many
who claim to be Christians.
They may be waiting for God to
call them to serve Him in some
sort of thrilling, spectacular
way. However, we believe that
God, like when He spoke to
Elijah, in a soft, sweet voice,
will speak to His children in a
similar way.
Are we too busy with other
matters to listen for that still,
small, loving voice of Jesus
Christ, the Savior, and Shep
herd of our souls?
If one is starting out on a trip
to some foreign point, one will
seek a map or other guide as to
how to get there and what to
enjoy once they arrive. Now life
is a trip to some unknown place
and we need a guide for the trip.
The Psalmist may have had this
in mind when he asked God to
show him “His way” etc.
All through the Bible we will
find directions as to how to
reach our heavenly home. Old
and New Testament alike give
us such guidance. Take time to
read your Bible and take time to
listen for the sweet, loving voice
of our Christ.

OAKLAND, Calif. (UPI)-A
21-year-old AWOL soldier, who
hijacked a Pacific Southwest
Airlines jetliner for $455,000
ransom, surrendered early to
day to a highway patrol captain
he had taken hostage.
“I told him that as soon as he
stepped down the ramp an FBI
agent is going to squeeze one
off and ‘your head will
disintegrate,’” said California
highway patrol officer Lloyd
Turner, 42.
The hijacker, identified by
the FBI as Francis Goodell,
Manassas, Va., handed over
two guns and the ransom after
two tense hours of waiting in
the Boeing 727 on the runway at
Oakland airport.

New rules boost
food stamps here
Spalding County officials of
the Department of Family and
Children Services have ex
plained that the imposition of a
nation-wide eligibility scale has
caused continuing increases in
Griffin’s food stamp rolls.
“Food stamps are available
to everyone in the county (who
meet the requirements), not
just the people who receive
some kind of public assistan
ce,” said Carol Johnson,
coordinator of the foot stamp
program.
Mrs. Johnson estimated that
approximately 300 households
in Spalding County which
receive no other form of public
welfare receive food stamps.
Those households which
quality for the food stamp
program use a part of their
income for each month to
purchase food stamps —
receiving an average of 25
percent additional “bonus”
stamps above the purchase
price.
“Usually, a household can
expect to get about one week of
free food per month under the
food stamp program,” ex
plained Mrs. Joe Mills, director
of the Spalding County DFCS.
Four basic requirements
have been set under new food
stamp regulations: income, a
cooking facility within the
household, residence within the
county, and a limit on the
amount of reserve a household
may have.

been a passenger in plain

it was seized over northern
California.
The hijacker took command
of the plane while it was flying
from Oakland to Sacramento
and ordered it to head for San

the ransom at San Diego and
the hijacker released all but
two of the 57 passengers before
forcing the crew to fly to
Oakland.

“No fresh vegetables or
meats were avilable through
the commodities distribution
program, or food for older or
disabled persons who require
special diets,” explained Mrs.

Food stamps also have ac
counted for an increase of
grocery sales of six per cent
within Spalding County, FCS

“Food stamps may be used
only to purchase food items

Mrs. Mills pointed out.

If one employable member of

One of the guns Goodell
turned over was Turner’s

Turner said he had not been

“I could have shot him

Turner said Goodell told him
he was a Vietnam War veteran
and complained the Army

in Southeast Asia.
Before releasing 55 other
passengers at San Diego, the

money for “two organizations
involved in the Mideast crisis.”
The ransom was paid with
$450,000 in SIOO bills, $4,000 in

Orthodox Jew wants court
to clear Jesus of charges
TEL AVIV (UPI)-Jesus
Christ faced his accusers
nearly 2,000 years ago and said
nothing, the Bible says. Now,
an Orthodox Jew wants a court
in the city where Jesus was
condemned to death to speak
up and exonerate Christ of all
charges.
Lawyer Itzhak David, 36, an
Orthodox Jew, failed in his first
attempt. But he said he will try
again.
In Jerusalem, where it all
happened, the supreme court
Thursday rejected David’s ap
plication of declaratory judg
ment to exonerate Jesus of all
the charges brought against
him. It argued that his
conviction and crucifixion is a
matter of history and not
something for a modern court
to decide.
The court said Jesus reputed
ly had been sentenced to death
by the Roman governor of
Judea, Pontius Pilate, and that
it was equivalent to a sentence
handed down by a foreign

Hijacker, hands raised, surrenders
military tribunal. Therefore,
the court said, there was no
reason for present-day judicial
authorities to take up the
matter.
“I am not interested in
whether Jesus Christ was guilty
or innocent of the charges
brought against him,” David
said in an interview. “I want a
hearing on how the trial was
conducted.
“Jesus was sentenced by a
Roman court and it was
prejudiced against the Jews.
Therefore, the trial was not in
accordance with the due
process of law.
“I want a declaration from
the court saying the trial he got
was contrary to justice and
that the trial was Used as a
hoax to get him executed. We
are ashamed of the trial he got.
It is a grave miscarriage of
justice that the Jews have been
carrying for 2,000 years.”
David, a bachelor born in
Jerusalem and educated in
London, argued his case for 90
Wallace convention bound
SILVER SPRING, Md. (UPI)
—Presidential candidate George
C. Wallace left Holy Cross
Hospital after 53 days of
treatment for gunshot wounds
today and flew to Alabama to
reclaim the governorship before
heading for the Democratic
National Convention.
The governor was driven
from the hospital in this
northern suburb of the nation’s
capital to Andrews Air Force
base for the flight by military
airlift ambulance plane to
Montgomery, the state capital.
“I feel good, I feel great,”
Wallace said with a big smile
to reporters on the hospital
steps as he was taken by
wheelchair from the hospital to
a waiting car.
“See you in Miami.”
Tight Security
His wife Cornelia joined him
in the car for the ride to
Andrews.
There was tight security at
the hospital, with Secret
Service agents and uniformed
state and county police and
hospital guards on hand.
About 100 nurses and other
hospital personnel applauded
the governor, who wore a blue
and white pin-striped suit.
Wallace paused several minutes
minutes in behalf of his client,
David Bitan, an Orthodox
Jewish immigrant from France
with six children. Both live in
the Red Sea port of Eilat.
David said he has asked for a
judicial review of the case in
attempts to bring it before the
full nine-man court. A three
man court heard the case
Thursday.
Tradition says Jesus was
sentenced to death on charges
of blasphemy for declaring
himself king of the Jews. It has
been a matter of dispute
whether the Jews assisted
Pilate in condemning Jesus to
the cross.
The Vatican Ecumenical
Council said in October, 1965,
that Jewish authorities “and
those who followed their lead
pressed for the death of Christ.
Still, what’s happened in his
passion cannot be blamed on all
the Jews then living, without
distinction, nor upon all the
Jews of today.”
to shake hands, and said
“Everyone’s been so fine and
gracious.”
Wallace, still paralyzed below
the waist from the attempt on
his life in May, was accompa
nied by a medical team to
monitor his condition and
continue three.hours of daily
physical therapy to strengthen
his shoulders and arms.
Still intent on winning the'
Democratic presidential nomin
ation, Wallace arranged a
wheelchair speech to a big
crowd of welcomers in Mont
gomery before flying later in
the day to Miami Beach where
the party convention starts
Monday.
At the airfield, Wallace was
lifted from his black limousine
into the wheelchair, which then
was carried up the ramp into
the plans. The governor was
turned facing outward through
the door and waved and saluted
as he posed for pictures for
about two minutes.
His plane left at 10:02 a.m.
EDT for the approximately
two-hour flight to Montgomery.
Before leaving the hospital,
Wallace issued this written
statement:
“On the occasion of my
departure from Holy Cross
