Chief,
deputy
in wrecks
Two local lawmen escaped
injury when their cars were
involved in separate traffic
accidents yesterday and this
morning.
Griffin Police Chief Leo
Blackwell’s auto collided with a
pickup truck towing a boat
yesterday afternoon some
seven miles west of Jackson on
Ga. 16.
Chief Blackwell said he and
his wife were on their way to
Athens to visit relatives. He
said he was passing the other
vehicle when its driver made a
left turn into the path of his car,
without giving a signal.
Patrolmen at the Griffin State
Patrol Post said the signal
lights on the boat were not
working.
Chief Blackwell said he was
able to drive his car home, even
though it was damaged heavily.
This morning, around 5
o’clock, Spalding Sheriff’s
Deputy Davis Peeples’ patrol
car collided with an auto which
had been left unattended on
West Broad street at the rear of
St. George’s Episcopal Church.
Griffin Police said the parked
station wagon was owned by
Wilbur Henry Boynton of 119
Slaton alley. He told officers he
had run out of gas.
Damage to the 1972 model
sheriff’s car was set at SBSO.
Damage to the parked car was
$125.
Youth shot;
two held
Two teenagers have been
charged in connection with a
shooting incident shortly after
noon Saturday.
Griffin Police said a 16-year
old youth, who cannot be named
under Georgia law, and Ricky
Brittain, 17, of 1343 Edgewood
avenue, were arrested following
a shooting which took place on
First street, between Slaton and
Broadway. They said that
Fuller of 327 North
Second street, was shot,
allegedly by the 16-year-old
following an argument.

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Pirkle
announce the birth of a son on
July 1 at St. Vincent Hospital in
Jacksonville, Fla. Mrs. Pirkle is
the former Letha Smith of
Griffin.

Mrs. Massengale
Funeral services for Mrs.
Cora Kimbrell Massengale of
Route three, Fayetteville, were
conducted Sunday afternoon at
2:30 o’clock in McDonald
Chapel. The Rev. U. D.
Singleton and the Rev. Robert
Higgenbothim officiated and
burial was in the Elmore
cemetery in Senoia.
Mrs. Massengale died at her
home Friday evening.
Her survivors include three
sons, Chief Petty Officer Merrill
Massengale of U.S. Coast
Guard, Port Huron, Donald
Everett Massengale and Glenn
Esric Massengale, both of
Griffin; two sisters, Mrs.
Arizona Cosper of College Park
and Mrs. Alain Laney of
Wedowee, Ala.; two brothers,
William Joseph Kimbrell of
Fayetteville and James Her
man Kimbrell of Griffin; three
daughters-in-law, eight grand
children and several nieces and
nephews.

Funeral services for Mrs.
Mary O. Johnson Reed of 331
West Tinsley street were
conducted this morning in
McDonald Chapel at 11 o’clock.
The Rev. Forest Taylor and the
Rev. U. F. Speir officiated and
burial was in Sandy Springs
United Methodist Church
cemetery
She is survived by her
husband, Warren Reed and a
brother, Freeman W. Johnson
of Mobile; and several nieces
and nephews.
Mrs. Reed died Saturday
morning at the Griffin-Spalding
Hospital.
Mr. Ison
Mr. Lee Oliver Ison of 1308
Brown street died Sunday
morning at the Griffin-Spalding
Hospital.
Mr. Ison was born in Spalding
County and made his home here
for most of his life. He was a
member of the Crossroads
Primitive Baptist Church and a
retired employe of Crompton
Highland Mill.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Cora Hatchett Calvert
Ison; a daughter, Mrs. Wallace
Callaway of Griffin; two
brothers, W. D. Ison and Henry
Ison, both of Griffin; two step
daughters, Mrs. Ruth Hastings
of Albuquerque, N. Mex., and
Mrs. Lucile Steger of Griffin; a
step-son, Oressa Calvert of
Zebulon; two grandsons; two
great-grandsons; 10-step
grandchildren, three step
great-grandchildren and
several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were con
ducted this afternoon at 2
o’clock in Oak Hill Baptist
Church. The Rev. Warren
Bedingfield officiated and
burial was in Griffin Memorial
Gardens. McDonald Chapel was
in charge of plans.
Mr. Holmes
Funeral services for Mr. John
Holmes, 63, of East Point,
formerly of Butts County, will
be held Tuesday afternoon at 1
o’clock from the Neriah Baptist
Church in East Point. The Rev.
R. N. Martin and the Rev. Hopie
Strickland will officiate and
burial will be in Eatonton,
Putman County.
Survivors include his wife,
Mrs. Alma Holmes; step
daughter, Miss Bernice Foster
of Atlanta; step-son, Sgt.
Jimmy Foster of Fort Bragg,
N.C.; two sisters, two brothers.
The body will lie in state at
the church for one hour prior to
the funeral. Friends and
relatives are asked to assemble
at the residence by noon

Mrs. Garner
Mrs. Lilia Witt Gamer, 91, of
Atlanta, died Sunday at the
Highview Nursing Home in
Atlanta.
She was born in Upson
County, daughter of the late
John P. Witt and the late
Frances Witt. Mrs. Garner was
a member of East Griffin the
Congregational Holiness
Church in Griffin
She is survived by three
daughters, Mrs. W. L. Nelms of
Griffin, Mrs. W. H. Grant of
Forest Park and Mrs. T. R.
Taylor, Jr., of Hapeville; two
sons, J. K. Garner, Sr., and
Harold J. Gamer, both of
Griffin; a sister, Mrs. E. L.
Blackstone of College Park; 14
grandchildren, 27 great
grandchildren and one great
great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be
conducted Tuesday morning at
11 o’clock in Donehoo’s Chapel
in Hapeville. The Rev. James
Royals and the Rev. Herbert
Burcher will officiate and burial
will be in Greenwood cemetery.
Donehoo Funeral Home of
Hapeville is in charge of plans.
Mr. Hammond
Mr. Marion Freeman
Hammond of Williamson died
Sunday night at the Griffin-
Spalding Hospital where he was
admitted on Saturday night.
Mr. Hammond was a native of
Douglas, Ga., and had made his
home in Atlanta for 60 years
before moving to Williamson 10
months ago. He was employed
by Texaco Oil Co., for 36 years
before retiring six years ago.
Mrs. Hammond was a member
of the West End Baptist Church,
a member of the Battle Hill
Masonic Lodge 523, the Scottish
Rite Mason and was a Shriner.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Dora Moore Hammond of
Williamson, and a niece, Mrs.
A. L. Johnson of Orlando, Fla.
The body will remain at
Pittman Rawls Funeral Home
until Tuesday morning when he
will be carried to H. M. Pat
terson Cascade Road Funeral
Home. Funeral services will be
conducted Tuesday afternoon at
5 o’clock from the Cascade
Road Chapel with Dr. Stanley
Hahn and Dr. W. M. Suttles
officiating. Burial will be in
Westview cemetery. Friends
may visit the family at the
home of Mrs. Harry Dearing in
Williamson.
Mr. Gleaves, Sr.
Mr. Benjamin T. Gleaves, Sr.,
86, of Mt. Juliet, Tenn., died at
the Living Center of Griffin
Sunday afternoon where he had
been a patient for two weeks.
The body was carried to
Donelson, Tenn., this morning
and funeral services will be
conducted Tuesday afternoon at
2:30 o’clock in the Hibbett and
Hailey Funeral Home Chapel.
Burial will be in the Mt. Juliet
cemetery.
Mr. Gleaves is survived by his
wife, Mrs. Monte Vernon
Gleaves; a daughter, Mrs. John
L. Gallitello of Columbus; a son,
Dr. Ben T. Gleaves, Jr., of
Griffin; eight grandchildren
and four great-grandchildren.
Haisten Funeral Home was in
charge of local arrangements.
Miss Aiken
Miss Lottie Cook Aiken, 89, of
Barnesville, died at the Upson
County Hospital in Thomaston
Saturday night where she was
admitted last Thursday.
Miss Aiken was the daughter
of the late Rev. E. K. Aiken and
the late Elizabeth Walker
Aiken. She was born in
Hogansville.
She was confined to the
Providence Nursing Home in
Thomaston for the past two
years. Miss Aiken was a
member of the Barnesville
First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a niece,
Miss Lottie Mitchell of Bar
nesville; and two nephews, R.
E. Mitchell of Zebulon and W.
H. Mitchell of Barnesville.
Graveside services were
conducted in Greenwood
cemetery this morning at 11
o’clock. The Rev. J. U. Little
officiated. Haisten Funeral
Home of Barnesville was in
charge of plans.
First United Methodist Church presented plaques to two Church School officers at the morning
worship service to mark their 40th year in their respective offices. Robert Adair (Chick) Chunn (1)
is the Church School treasurer and Paul Daniel (r) is the secretary. In addition to that, Mr. Daniel
marked his 25th year as church treasurer July 7.
Mrs. Pitts among those injured
Mrs. Earl Pitts, 593 South
Sixth street, owner of the
Griffin Flower Shop, was in
satisfactory condition today at
Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta
where she underwent surgery
for a crushed hip she suffered in
an automobile accident Friday.
State patrolmen said Mrs.
Pitts’ car wrecked on the
Barnett Bridge road in Butts
County Friday about 6:15 p.m.
Napoleon Dewey Greene, 46,
of Route Five, and a teacher at
Moore Elementary School,
suffered a fractured arm and
cuts Saturday afternoon when
his motorcycle wrecked on the
North Expressway. He was
admitted to the local hospital.
Grady Lee Shockley, 35, of
Chestnut street, was treated for
knee and back injuries he
suffered when his auto left the
road and clipped a utility pole.
Patromen said the accident
happened near the city limits on
North Ninth street yesterday.
Four persons were injured
Saturday night in a collision on
the North Expressway at the
West Mclntosh road.
Police said Joel Smith, 33, of
738 Meriwether street, was
driving a dune-buggy which
collided with an auto driven by
Jack W. Mclntyre of Fayet
teville.
Smith and three passengers in
the dune-buggy were injured.
He suffered ankle and
shoulder injuries. His wife, Mrs.
Jo Ann Smith, was admitted to
the hospital with head, arm and
foot injuries. Susan Smith, 14,
suffered neck, chest and ankle
injuries. Robert William Tiler,
18, was treated for chest, back
and chin injuries.
Saturday at 8:45 p.m., two
youths were injured in a one-car
wreck on the Birdie road.
Patrolmen said Ricky H.
Chambers, 22, of Griffin lost
control of his auto on a curve.
His passengers, David Randall
Spoon of 1605 Rosewood drive,
and Michael Catro, 18, of 1423
Old Atlanta road, were injured.
Yesterday Mrs. Joan Long,
32, of Route Two, Jackson, was
taken to the Sylvan Grove

Hospital with back, neck and
leg injuries she suffered when
her auto overturned on the Hall
Bridge road in Butts County.
Edgar Paul Hoard of 101 West
Woodland drive, suffered cuts
about the head when his auto
collided with a car driven by
Joe Lewis Puckett, 26, of 1321
Edgewood avenue.
The collision occurred at
South Eighth and College
streets about 3:40 p.m. Friday.
An accident involving three
cars on the North Expressway
in front of the Georgia State
Peeping Tom
charge made
William Whitner, 21, of 583
North Sixth street, was arrested
early Saturday morning and
charged with being a peeping
tom. The warrant was taken by
Albert Donald of 303 North
Eighth street.
Youth caught
in station
Bobby F. Bradley, 17, of
Route Four, Box 207-B, was
being held in the city jail pen
ding an investigation after
police officers found him in
Kimbell’s Union 76 Service
Station at Taylor and 13th
streets, last night around 10:15.
Sgt. B. E. Pitts and Officer
Dean Ray, who were on patrol,
apprended the youth inside the
station. Warrants charging him
with burglary and violation of
the Georgia Drug Abuse Control
Act will be taken, police said.

Patrol Station Friday injured a
Locust Grove teenager.
Griffin Police said Kay An
derson, 15, was treated in the
hospital emergency room for
injuries she received. She was
in a car driven by Mrs. Lererine
Atkinson, 38, of Locust Grove.
Drivers of the other vehicles
were Mrs. Jane Buffington of
427 New Salem road and Henry
Bruce Baker of Ellis road.
Several traffic charges were
placed against Baker.
