WASHINGTON (UPI) - The
federal government is expected
to announce soon details of a
$lO million program to combat
sckle cell anemia, a painful,
incurable blood disease that pri
marily afflicts blacks.
Health officials estimate the
disease may affect 50,000 per
sons nationwide. Another two
million Negroes carry the trait
in their genes and could pass it
on to their children.
Hospital-based research cen
ters have been approved for 10
cities and screening-education
clinics for 19 sites. But the ac
tual setting up of the facilities
has been delayed because of bu
reaucratic red tape involved in
preparing the official announce
ment.
The program has also run into
other problems such as state
lethargy in screening for sic
kle cell traits arid resistance of
some blacks who fear implica
tion of preventive birth control
and the necessary screening and
blood testing to spot and treat
the disease.
The centers approved by the
National Advisory Heart and
Lung Council include Augusta,
Ga., and Memphis, Tenn.
Clinics supported by the
Health Services and Mental
Health Administration, a divi
sion of the Department of
Health, Education and Welfare
(HEW) include Miami; Jack
son, Miss.; Charleston, S. C.,
and Richmond, Va.

Mrs. Norma Lenhart, Mgr.
tic National Convention in
Florida.
“There is no way I will take
the vice presidential nomina
tion,” Kennedy said Sunday. “I
owe it to Joan (his wife), the
children, my mother and
sisters. There is no way I will
take the nomination.”
Kennedy’s wife went to the
convention, and appeared at the
Democrat’s national telethon.
She said her husband was not a
presidential candidate and the
decision was “final.”
However, Kennedy has been
unable to dampen speculation
all year—despite constant disa
vowals of his candidacy—and
his name is still cropping up.
Kentucky Gov. Wendell H.
Ford, for example, said Sunday
night he could support a ticket
led by Rep. Wilbur Mills, D-
Ark., and with Kennedy as vice
{residential candidate. ■
Kennedy has been mentioned
also as a possible running mate
for Sen. George S. McGovern.
Kennedy, who attended mass
at Hyannis with members of
the family Sunday morning,
told the Boston Globe he has
made an “absolute and final”
rejection of any draft for the
second place on the ticket.

CINCINNATI (UPI)-When
Judge Paul J. George failed to
appear for a Saturday session
of Criminal Court, the bailiff
called him at home.
George showed up in court
half an hour later, explaining
he had forgotten about the
weekend session. “I was just
about to mow the lawn,” he
said.
GLOUCESTER, England
(UPl)—When rescuers pulled
Kenneth Price, 39, from his
wrecked car three days ago he
feared he might die and his
thoughts turned to his wife
Margaret and her need for the
S9BO in his wallet.
“I think I am going to snuff
it,” he whispered to one of his
rescuers. “Please see my wife
gets this wallet.”
Price lived to return to his
wife but his wallet didn’t.
Police are investigating the
case of the good Samaritan who
wasn’t.
