Vacations virtually unknown in China
By SAM JAFFE
SHANGHAI, China (UPI)-
It’s vacation time for millions
of Westerners, but in China,
August is just another month of
labor as 800 million Chinese
work to transform their “back
ward society” into a highly
industrialized nation.
A vacation is virtually
unknown in China. “It would be
fine to have extra time off
during the year to visit the
country or the seashore,” said
one Chinese official, “but we
must work hard to build up our
backward country.”
Chinese workers receive six
official paid holidays a year.

The longest, the spring festival
—formerly Chinese New Year—
is three consecutive days. The
working class also receives two
days off to celebrate Oct.l,
China’s National Day, and one
day off on May Day, all with
Pay.
Although vacations are not
the rule, there are exceptions.
Because of the critical need for
highly skilled workers, an
electrical engineer, for exam
ple, may be transfered from his
home to a remote part of the
country for a long period,
leaving his family behind.
Every Effort Made
“While every effort is made
to keep the family together.”
an official said, “many times it
is impossible.”
In a country where nearly
every man and woman is
employed, and much of the
work is specialized, it is not
always possible to keep hus
band and wife together, he said.
The government makes up
for the separation by giving one
member of the family up to
three weeks off with pay to
visit the other. This does not
include the cost of transporta
tion or transportation of the
children.
Time off with pay is also
given to people recovering from
a serious illness. They are sent
to health resorts in the
mountains or by the sea.
“A man I know who was
suffering from liver trouble was
given more than a year off with
full salary to recover,” said an
official. Expectant mothers
receive 56 days paid maternity
leave. The average Chinese
work day is eight hours, six
days a week. But some workers
are required to work overtime.
Although there is no overtime
pay, the worker receives
additional days off.
Not True for Officials
This is not true, however, for
government officials. Since
China recently parted its
Bamboo Curtain, some Peking
and Shanghai officials have
been putting in more than 16
hours a day.
“The growing number of
foreign tourists and journalists
require us to work long hours,
because we have a shortage of
trained personnel, without extra
time off or extra salary,” an
official said. “But we don’t
mind. It is a pleasure to work,
especially when we think about
how the Chinese people were
exploited before the revolution;
how we never had the
opportunity to work for our
selves and our country. We
Page 11
know we must work and work
hard to build our country.”
In China most factories
operate around the clock, seven
days a week. Although Sunday
is normally a holiday, those
required to work are given a
day off during the week. Most
shops are open on Sunday, and
there are special stores open 24
hours a day for people who
cannot shop during normal
shopping hours.
Schools are closed during the'
summer months throughout the
mainland, but many youngsters
attend children’s palaces where
they are taught handicraft,
trades and culture. Children
