Montgomery wins SE championship
The Montgomery Grays,
Alabama State champions, won
the 1972 Southeastern Region
Babe Ruth Tournament here
last night and will play in the
league’s World Series Aug. 19-26
at Pine Bluff, Ark.
The southeastern cham

Montgomery.
Nashville, Tenn, forced the
tournament into an extra game
by beating the Grays 4-1 yester
day in the first game of a
doubleheader.

George Stone blanks
Houston Astros, 6-0
ATLANTA (UPI) — This
hasn’t been a happy season for
George Stone but there still is
time for the Braves lefty to
make a respectable year of it.
Stone started poorly, losing
six of his first seven games and
building a huge earned run
average. But he has been a
streak pitcher in the past and
now maybe he can hit a hot
streak.
He allowed only six hits
Wednesday night while shutting
out Houston, the second place
team in the Western Division,
6-0.
“I used my fast ball and my
slider all night,” he said later.
“I had better control than I’ve
had and I was moving my fast
ball in and out a lot. It was the
best fast ball I’ve had.”
Stone’s record now is 4-8. He
went the distance, the second
consecutive complete game
victory new Manager Eddie
Mathews has had from his
much-maligned pitching staff.

Henry Aaron hit a two-run

that winning—two out of three

monotonous.
‘‘Did the Big Blue Machine

Third baseman Darrell Evans

Carlton has nearly half of wins

“I don’t think about records

look back on,” Steve Carlton
said Wednesday night after he
pitched a three-hitter and hit a
homer to give the hapless
Philadelphia Phillies a 2-0

streak to 13 straight games.
Carlton hasn’t lost since May

season, Carlton has almost half
