’ Mayor Thompson
plans Viet tour
MACQN, Ga. (UPl)—Looking
fit and rested, Macon’s flam
boyant mayor, Ronnie Thomp
i son, has returned to work after
hospitalization for mental de
pression and says he’s planning
a trip to South Vietnam.
While Thompson set no date
for his visit to Vietnam, where
he traveled three years ago, he
said he was definitely in the
Bth Congressional district race
against Rep. W. S. “Bill”
Stuckey.
> Thompson entered a private
psychiatric hospital in Macon
almost a month ago for treat
ment of what doctors called a
* depressed state. His physician
said the mayor had struck his
head on the ceiling of a plane
during a flight through turbu
lent weather.
The mayor was nominated for
Congress in the Republican pri

What would you do
without electricity?
Very little. You couldn’t enjoy any of the
electric comforts and conveniences, of course. You
also probably wouldn’t enjoy a very high standard
of living, because the availability of electric power
is a very large factor in building business, industry,
jobs and prosperity for us all. Which is why it’s a
very good thing that Georgia’s consumer-owned
electric utilities were formed. Without us, some
1.25 million Georgians living over 80% of the area
of the state would be powerless. And prosperity-less.
If we don’t light you up, we probably do light up
someone you know or love. We do that so no one
will have to do without.

The controversial Thompson,
in typical fashion, said he in
tended to present a patriotism
award to George Peake of Ma

the national GOP convention in
Miami Beach, who said he had
clouted a demonstrator at the
Republican gathering.
Thompson said he planned to
take it easy for a time, and
spent just three hours in his
office Thursday, a week before
he was scheduled to return to
work. He said he felt “good”
and had gained 20 pounds dur
ing his hospital stay.

Os God and man
Tn the mood’ is debatable
By LOUIS CASSELS
United Press International
The notion is widely held that
acts of religious devotion are
more sincere and meaningful if
they’re entirely spontaneous.
That’s debatable.
Spontaneity of religious ex
pression undoubtedly has some
great advantages. It guards us
against the hypocrisy of doing
things, such as going to church,
because we’re expected to. It
also forestalls the sterility of
doing things, such as saying
grace before meals, out of
sheer habit.
But those who engage in acts
of worship only when they feel
“in the mood” are disregarding
the example of Jesus, the
teaching of the Bible and the
experience of a long line of
saints.
Spontaneous Acts Treasured
Jesus treasured spontaneous
acts of devotion. But he knew
that a man’s mood may be
affected by many things, such
as illness, fatigue or adversity.
And he also knew that it is
precisely in such low moments
that men most need to turn to
God for comfort and guidance.
So he set an example of
disciplined regularity in wor
ship.
From what he did, as well as
what he taught, we know that

Jesus believed in attending
worship services every Sab
bath. He also set aside time for
private prayers and meditations
every day.
The same viewpoint is
reflected in the Bible, especial
ly in the letters of St. Paul.
Paul admonished members of
early Christian communities to
be “constant”—i.e., regular—in
prayer. No one knew better
than Paul how easy it is to
become so distracted by other
concerns—not just frivolous
pleasures but important duties
—that one never feels “in the
mood” to take time out for
quiet communion with God. So
he insisted that regular periods

“Dry” Spells Recorded
Many great saints, including
St. Augustine, St. Francis and
St. Theresa of Avila, recorded
in their memoirs that they
often went through spells of
“dryness” when they felt
absolutely devoid of any
spontaneous devotion to God.
But they learned from exper
ience that perseverance in
worship when you least feel like
it is the highest form of
devotion because it is an act of
pure obedience, a deliberate
subjection of your own will to
God’s will.
Another reason for regularity
in prayer, Bible reading and
church attendance is that you
never can tell, in advance,
when some word, sentence or
incident will suddenly illumin
ate your mind and lift up your
spirit. It can happen unexpec
tedly, unforeseeably, in the
midst of the dullest sermons, or
during private devotions which
you had to drive yourself to
make.
Spontaneity is a fine thing,
and there is merit to the
contention of Pentecostals, and
young people in the Jesus
