DR. LAWRENCE E. LAMB
Do We Consume
Too Many Pills?
By Lawrence Lamb, M.D.
Dear Dr, Lamb — You
asked what people do for in
somnia. I don’t use sleeping
pills, I just check up on my
self and see what bad habits
I have. Usually it’s because
I've been drinking too much
tea, coffee, colas, booze—
take your choice. So I either
cut down or cut out and
sleep People are really
dumb about their bad habits.
They pretend their living
habits aren’t hurting them
and then when their poor
bodies protest at last, they
stuff dope down their gullets
thinking that will solve all
their problems.
I think a lot of women
would not have gall bladder
trouble if they drank enough
water. I've talked to a lot of
them and everyone of them
admits that they haven’t
drunk any water in years.
They think their illness isn’t

THE TRUE FACT FROM
DON JACKSON
Who Has Dealt With Taxes
For 25 Years!
1. The State Revenue Commission required by law passed by General Assembly to
increase assessed value (not taxes) of property from 28.88 percent of market value to
40 perpent of market value.
2. Utility Company values are set and solely controlled by State Revenue Commission
- Local County Tax Assessor in Spalding or any county has no control.
3. Help correct, this situatgm on utility taxes I propose to submit legislation to enlarge
the appeals board of public utility assessment to include local government
representation - this would give us a voice.
4. The estimated $60,080 that taxpayers might pay is not a fact - nor realistic figure
' - it is an assumption which may be all wrong.
5. The true facts are the amount of tax if any can not be determinted until State
Revenue Commission acts on local tax digest. This is true for every county in Georgia.

their fault and that they’re
just unlucky. One or two of
the fat old biddies blame it
on the "will of God” but
they’d have a fit if the old
wino down the street blamed
the ‘‘will of God” for his bad
liver. No difference.
I think you doctors are to
blame to a certain extent.
Instead of giving pills why
don't you tell those people
who only need to reduce or
to revise their bad habits to
do just that? But of course,
th< y wouldn’t do it. They like

Dear Reader—Your hostil
ity is showing. I am glad to
note that you are a woman
and not a man or I would
have thought you were a
male chauvinist pig. How
ever, your observations that
people’s habits contribute to
their illness applies to both
men and women. In other

to do things to prevent ill
ness. The problem is that
most of the things people
need to do about their living
habits to prevent illness
aren’t very popular. People
don’t like to limit the amount
they eat or the amount they
drink or to stop smoking and
others don’t like to do any
exercise. Yet these are some
of the most important as
pects of maintaining good
health and preventing ill
ness. If you read my column

I frequently encourage peo

habits. I’m glad to have such

Here’s a new thought on
why men are less susceptible
to urinary tract infections
than women. Dr. William
Ferrar at Stanford Univer
sity has reported that the
prostatic fluid of normal men
contains an antibacterial
substance that completely
destroys bacteria obtained
from patients with urinary
tract infections. This sub
stance is being investigated
further to see if it can be
clearly identified and syn
thesized to be used in treat
ing infections. I have always
thought of the male prostate

Elizabeth, 11, has
no place to go
GORIZIA, Italy (UPl)—Eli
zabeth, 11, made it safely
across the border from Yugo
slavia, in the hazardous manner
of thousands of refugees from
Communist lands since World
War fl.
But for Elizabeth, there will
be no new life in the West.
Authorities sent Elizabeth
back to Yugoslavia because,
they ruled, she is too young to
request political asylum.
Authorities said they could
remember no case like it
before.
The girl was not identified
except as Elizabeth, a Polish
citizen who slipped across the
border late Wednesday into this
city of 43,000 located directly on
the border with Yugoslavia.
Border police said the girl’s

stepmother was stopped and
arrested by Yugoslav authori
ties as she tried to cross the
border. But Elizabeth made it
alone.
Her uncle, who police said
fled to Switzerland a year ago,
met Elizabeth at the border.
Police said he tried to keep
the girl with him by claiming
he was her father. But they
said his documents proved
otherwise.
So under an agreement
between Italy and Yugoslavia
on political refugees, the girl
was turned over to Yugoslav
officials.
There, police reported, Eli
zabeth rejoined her stepmother
—behind bars.
Their fate is unknown to
Italian police.
