Ethnic traits
provide clues
to lung ills
By DICK KLEINER
DUARTE, Calif.—(NEA)
— More and more, medical
researchers are uncovering
genetic traits in disease. Ap
parently, some ethnic groups
are more prone to one, while
other groups appear more
susceptible to another.
Dr. Jack Lieberman has
discovered what he calls “an
inherited disposition” to pul
monary emphysema, the
lung disease which is becom
ing increasingly common as
smoking and other lung ir
ritants increase.
Lieberman’s work is only
one of several medical ge
netics projects being carried
out at the City of Hope Medi
cal Center here. He is in
charge of the Center’s Pul
monary Biochemistry Labor
atory.
Lieberman says the first
indication that emphysema
might have an inherited
quality was uncovered in a
research project in Sweden
a decade ago. The initial
breakthrough indicated a re
cessive gene was responsi
ble, and the Swedes who did
the work estimated that pos
sibly one per cent of emphy
sema cases were genetic in
origin.
“It was treated as a medi
cal curiosity, that’s all,” he
says.
Lieberman took it more
seriously, however. First at
the Veterans’ Administration
Hospital in Long Beach,
Calif., and then here at the
City of Hope Medical Center,
he began studying emphy
sema patients.
He found, at Long Beach,
that of 66 emphysema vic
tims, 26 per cent had a de-

DAI
ficiency in their genetic
make-up. And, among those
patients who were 50 years
old or younger, the percent
age went up to 50 per cent.
At the City of Hope, his fig
ures have been almost identi
cal.
His studies apparently in
dicate that the genetic form
of the disease is responsi
ble for approximately half of
all emphysema cases. And
what is perhaps most curious
about the research thus far
is that there seems to be an
ethnic, or national, deriva
tion to these defective genes.
He has found that most
often the affected individ
uals come from a Northern
European background—Eng
lish, Irish, German, French,
Scandinavian. He has rarely
found it in people whose heri
tage is black, Italian, Jewish,
Mexican or American Indian.
The prdblem seems to lie
in a protein — alpha-1 anti
trypsin — which is part of
the chemical make-up of the
gene. By testing for anti
trypsin deficiency, Lieber
man is able to detect early
signs of emphysema.
He thinks it is possible, too,
that the remaining 50 per
cent of emphysema cases —
those who do not have this
antitrypsin deficiency in
their genes — will prove to
have some other genetic de
fect.
Lieberman’s hope is that,
ultimately, a screening proc
ess can be set up at the
junior high school level,
which would identify those
youngsters who have the
antitrypsin deficiency.
