Patrol beefed
for holiday
Troopers at the Griffin Post of
the Georgia State Patrol will be
patrolling their three-county
area (Spalding, Henry and
Butts Counties) in full force
during the 7&-hour Labor Day
weekend. In addition, five extra
patrolmen will be working in
the district. Also, a unit of the
Locust Grove
man killed
in mishap
Mr. William Alex Garland, 31,
of Peeksville road, Locust
Grove was accidentally elec
trocuted Thursday afternoon
when a skyboom in whidh he
was working apparently came
in contact with an electrical
wire. The accident occurred in
Atlanta and Mr. Garland was
dead on arrival at the hospital.
He was employed by the R. H.
Bouligny Inc., of Charlotte,
N.C., an electrical contracting
firm, employed by Georgia
Power Co. Mr. Garland was a
native of Henry County and a
member of the Phillipie Baptist
Church.
His survivors include his wife,
Mrs. Diane Rogers Garland; a
daughter, Miss Mickey
Garland; parents, Mr. and Mrs.
A. D. Garland, Sr.; three
sisters, Mrs. James Lunsford,
Mrs. Eulee Martin and Mrs.
Frank Phillips; three brothers,
A. D. Garland, Jr., John
Garland and Emmett Garland,
all of Locust Grove; and several
nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be
conducted Saturday afternoon
at 3 o’clock from the Phillipie
Baptist Church. The Rev.
Jimmy Leverett and the Rev.
Winston Harmon will officiate
and burial will be in Macedonia
Baptist Church cemetery in
Butts County. The body will
remain at Pittman Rawls
Funeral Home until carried to
the church at 2 o’clock to lie in
state until the hour of funeral.

Civil Air Patrol has been
assigned here. It will have
direct radio communication
with the Griffin post.
The Labor Day holiday will
begin at 6 p.m. today and will
end at midnight Monday.
A trooper will be assigned to
the CAP aircraft and will
concentrate their watch for
speeders and accidents on 1-75,
U. S. 41 and 19, and other main
routes.
Road checks, radar, and
vascar also will be used.

Assembly
to be here
The Church of God 67th an
nual General Assembly will be
held Sept. 3-10, with two ser
vices daily.
Bishop Al Mink, missionary to
the Alaskan Indians, will
conduct each night’s service.
Delegates and pastors will be
here from most of the 321
churches in 27 states.
The church is located on
Richardson road, off Dobbins
Mill road. The Rev. Norman
is pastor.
Two burglaries
are investigated
Griffin Police were in
vestigating two burglaries this
morning.
Principal Laymon Hattaway
of Spalding Junior High School,
Unit 111 on Kelsey road,
discovered that his office had
been burglarized this morning
when he arrived at the school.
Typewriters, a calculator, and
tape recorder were missing.
Burglars also hit Bunn’s
Laundry, South Hill street.
There was some property
damage to the building. Of
ficials were checking this
morning to determine what was
taken.

Finally robs store
An unidentified gunman
finally robbed a food store on
his second try this morning,
while being pursued by police
from three counties.
Dressed in a dark blue sports
coat with light blue slacks, the
robber approached a food store
manager in East Point with an
automatic pistol early this
morning and demanded money.
Fleeing the store empty
handed, the hold-up man then
kidnapped a security guard and
forced him to drive to Fayette.
Elks ponder
annexation
request
Griffin Elks Lodge 1207 will
consider asking the city to
annex the club property and
building into the city at the Sept.
11 meeting of the fraternal
order.
The trustees of the lodge have
recommended the annexation.
It would include club
buildings and land east of the
four-lane by-pass and north of
the railroad near the club.
The trustees estimated a
potential savings of ap
proximately SIOO per month
after taxes if the lodge property
is annexed.

Spalding County Council of
PTA’s held a school of informa
tion for Third Ward PTA of
ficers and chairmen.
Instructing the school were
Mrs. Mike Acton, president of
the council and Mrs. Margaret
Boggs, publicity chairman for
the council.
Joe Akin is principal of Third
Ward and is program chairman
for the PTA. Larry Evans is
president of Third Ward PTA,
Marshall Sims is president
elect and Mrs. David Hightower
is secretary. Mrs. Jim Gornto
serves as treasurer.
Fifteen officers and chairmen
were present.
Extension
courses set
The Mercer Extension
Center will begin the fall
semester on Tuesday at 7:30
p.m. at the First Baptist
Church, Griffin, and will meet
each Tuesday night for 15
weeks.
Two courses will be offered.
They are: the book of Galatians
to be taught by Rev. Harold
Graham and Baptist Doctring
to be taught by Rev. Jesse
Hilton.
The Dean of the center is Rev.
Clifford Chandler. Registrar is
Mrs. Gladys Woodruff.

president
Sgt. Bonnie M. Pike of Griffin
who is with the Department of
Investigation (DOI) in Georgia
was elected president of the
International Association of
Auto Theft Investigators at the
organization’s meeting in Talla
hassee, Fla.
This is a professional associa
tion of more than 800 members
representing law enforcement
agencies, insurance companies,
and the automotive industry.

E-5 Bruce Gossett telephoned
his wife and his parents from
the Philippines Wednesday
night.
He is serving in the U. S. Navy
in the Indochina area.
Gossett’s wife is the daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. John T. Kenerly
and his parents are Mr. and
Mrs. Hubert G. Gossett, all of
Griffin.
After releasing the security
guard and his car, police said
the suspect hitchhiked to River
dale where he held-up the Stop
and Go Food Store on Roberts
drive and stole the manager’s
1972 silver and white Buick.
Police said he told the store
manager that he would leave
the car at the Peachtree Air
port.
The robber was described at
5’9” tall, approximately 30, with
green eyes and weighing 160
pounds.

with meeting

of PTA’s executive committee
met in the conference room of
Commercial Bank building
Wednesday. Mrs. Mike Acton,
president, presided.

Hotel, north ballroom, in
Atlanta at 1 p.m. Sept. 18.
Reservations are $5 each and
the deadline is Sept. 11.

Mr. Aiken 111
Mr. Franklin Dunwoody
Aiken 111, 46, of Charlotte, N.C.,
died Thursday after suffering a
heart seizure while on a
business trip to Douglas, Ga.
Mr. Aiken was the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Franklin Dunwoody
Aiken, Jr., of Griffin, and
husband of a former Griffinite,
Betty Millican Aiken.
He was born in Brunswick
and moved to Griffin in 1940.
Mr. Aiken attended Griffin High
School, Sewanee Military
Academy and Duke University
from which he graduated. While
in Griffin he was a member of
St. George’s Episcopal Church.
In Charlotte, Mr. Aiken was
sales manager of Gastobac;
[resident and general manager
of Bright Leaf Industries.
In addition to his wife, he is
survived by a son, Franklin
Dunwoody Aiken IV; a
daughter, Miss Peggy Aiken, all
of Charlotte; parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Franklin D. Aiken, Jr. of
Griffin; two sisters, Mrs.
Eugenia A. Powell of Griffin
and Mrs. Ronald Brown of Stone
Mountain; a brother, Douglas
T. Aiken of Savannah; mother
in-law, Mrs. E. E. Millican;
brother-in-law, Earle Millican
both of Griffin; sister-in-law,
Mrs. Augustus H. Frye, Jr., of
Lookout Mountain and several
nieces and nephews.
Funeral services and burial
will be conducted in Charlotte
on Saturday.

Andrews, 55, of Milner will be
conducted Saturday afternoon
at 2:30 o’clock from the White
Chapel CME Church in Bar
nesville. The Rev. C. L. Jones
will officiate and burial will be
Sand Hill cemetery. The body
will lie in state at the church
from 11:30 a.m. until the hour of
funeral.

two daughters, Mrs. Gloria
Fuller and Miss Linda An
drews; a son, Leon Richardson,
all of Barnesville; five brothers,

Girl, 3, injured
A three-year-old girl was in
fair condition today at the
Griffin-Spalding Hospital from
injuries she suffered last night
when struck by a car. Two other
persons also were injured in
separate traffic accidents
yesterday.
Patrolmen at the Griffin State
Patrol Post said Teresa D.
Barkley, three, daughter of
Mrs. Louberta Barkley of Route
Five, Box 58-A, ran into the path
of a car on Kathryn road, near
North Hill street extension,
around 7:30 p.m. She was
rushed to the hospital and was
being treated for a fractured
skull and head and face
lacerations.
Troopers termed the accident
unavoidable. Carl Williamson
Johnson, 22, of 615 Northside
avenue, was driving the car
involved.
Frank Stonica, 44, 701 New
Lane street, suffered face lac
erations and abrasions around
2:30a.m. when he lost control of
his car and it overturned in a
creek off North Ninth street,
near the Griffin city limits.
Stonica was treated in the local
hospital emergency room. His
auto was demolished.
Patrolmen said Jerri Baxter,
18, of Dallas, Ga., was injured
around 5:45 p.m. when she was
thrown from a car when it
crashed into a guard rail on 1-75
near Locust Grove. She was a
passenger in a car driven by
