Shug Jordan talks about 1972 season and outlook for Auburn.

Shug to start
sophomore QB
By JIM MCGREGOR
AUBURN, Ala. (UPI) - Au
burn Coach Ralph “Shug” Jor
dan told Southeastern Confer
ence “Skywriters” Thursday he
will open the season with a
sophomore in the starting quar
terback slot vacated by Heis
man Trophy winner Pat Sulli
van.
Jordan said he would go with
Randy Walls, a 6-foot-4, 210-
pounder, at quarterback Sept. 9
when the Tigers meet Mississip
pi State at Jackson. The coach
said Walls “has good speed,
throws real well and just needs
some maturity.”
The touring sportswriters
were told by Jordan that Au
bum would change from a pass
ing game to a running game be
cause of the loss of Sullivan and
receivers Terry Beasley and
Dick Schmaltz.
“We’ll have a basic running
attack formation this year in-

stead of the pro set,” said Jor
dan.
He admitted the loss of out
standing players would hurt,
but he said Auburn had lost
great players before.
Auburn president Harry Phil
pott agreed, telling the sports
writers, “You have come to
bury Auburn, not to praise her.
But don’t bury us yet because
we are not dead.”
Jordan said Walls would be
joined in the starting backfield
by senior tailback Terry Hen
ley, senior fullback James
Owens and sophomore wingback
Thomas Gossom.
The coach said he expected
the kicking game to be good
this year with the return of
punter David Beverly and kick
er Gardner Jett.
Jordan said Auburn lacks ex
perience in the offensive line
and has little depth at the line
backer position.
The Tigers’ depth roster lists
four freshmen who may be on
the team when the season opens
—tight end Ed Butler, punter
Clyde Baumgartner, kicker
Chris Wilson and linebacker
Lewis Bullard.
Jordan indicated Wilson
might become the Tigers’ long
distance field goal kicker. The
freshman already has booted
one from 50 yards in practice.
Jordan pointed out Auburn
was the only team scheduled to
play all five of the SEC’s top
rated teams — LSU, Ole Miss,
Alabama, Tennessee and Geor
gia.

George Allen is still undecid
ed as to whom his starting
quarterback will be but Curt
Knight has left very little doubt
as to who will be kicking
Washington’s field goals this
season.
Knight booted field goals of
51 and 24 yards in the final
period Thursday night that
enabled the Redskins to rally
from a 101-yard kickoff touch
down return by Miami’s Char
ley Leigh and edged the
Dolphins, 27-24, in a pre-season
contest.
Knight’s winning boot came
with only 36 seconds left in the
see-saw contest which saw the
Redskins raise their exhibition
record to 4-1.

Sullivan-Namath
ATLANTA (UPI) - Joe Na
math and Pat Sullivan —two
of the greatest quarterbacks in
Southeastern Conference history
—will be opposing starters Sat
urday when the New York Jets
play the Atlanta Falcons at
Grant Field, the home of Geor
gia Tech.
Promoters call it a “dream
matchup.” But any comparison
of the talents of the two former
state of Alabama collegiate
stars won’t be fair.
Namath, of course, blossomed
into “Broadway Joe,” an ex
perienced quarterback consid
ered by many experts to be the
best in the business when he is
healthy.
Sullivan, on the other hand, is
starting his first game as a pro
fessional and his learning prog
ress this season has been handi
capped because he was training
with the college all stars when
the Falcons camp opened.
Namath played at Alabama
and took the Crimson Tide to
three bowl games. In his three
varsity years Alabama lost only

playoffs last season, and Sonny
Jurgensen, the No. 1 active
passer in the National Football
League. But his decision as to
who will be his field goal kicker
is all but settled as Knight, who
led the National Conference in
points scored last season with
114, has looked impressive in
pre-season play.
Leigh, who had touchdown
returns of 99 and 57 yards
called back on penalties in
Miami’s contest last week, tied
the game 21-21 with his
electrifying run late in third
quarter.
In games this weekend
Baltimore plays Detroit Friday
night. Saturday’s schedule sea-
three games. As a senior he
completed 64 per cent of his
passes.
Sullivan’s performances for
Auburn were just as impres
sve. He won the Heisman Tro
phy in 1971 and was on at least
as many all American teams as
was Namath earlier.
Namath started slowly this
year but was sharp last week
end against the Super Bowl
champion Dallas Cowboys. He
played only in the first half,
completed 5 of 7 passes for 74
yards, and when he left New
York had a 20-7 lead. Dallas
won, 34-27.
Sullivan also looked good a
gainst Dallas. Playing in the
second half of the all-star game
at Chicago, the Auburn alumnus
moved the collegians for their
only touchdown against the
Cowboys.
He will be severely tested a
gainst New York. The Jets’
quick defense, operating last

lines in football, tackled the

Atlanta’s defense has gotten
to opposing quarterbacks only
five times in three games. The
Falcons have lost three in a
row in pre-season competition
and their fans, expecting a con
tender for the division title this
year, are growing restless.
Despite the showdown be
tween Namath and Sullivan, the
game is not a sellout. It was
not included in the Falcons’
season ticket package and by
late Thursday, about 30,000 tick
