Scientist battles malnutrition
ATLANTA (UPI)—An Emory University scientist says
efforts to combat the effects of malnutrition should be
concentrated on the preschool years of children.
“There is overwhelming evidence that severe
malnutrition in the prenatal period and postnatal years of
life, especially the first two years, leads to retarded brain
growth, permanent reduction in brain size and defective
intellectual development,” Dr. Sohan L. Manocha said.

Development,” Manocha urged that better nutrition be
provided to people of all ages, especially growing infants,
preschoolers and school children.
The neurohistochemist said because the peak period of
brain growth takes place prior to birth, children who
suffer brain damage from malnutrition cannot be helped
by school lunch programs.
Manocha, who works at Emory’s Yerkes Primate
Research Center said he estimates 60 per cent of the
world’s children suffer from malnutrition during the first
five years of life, and hundreds of thousands are being
added daily.

‘Slow down, no kidding’
ATLANTA (UPI) — Brightly colored six by 12 foot signs
with such warnings as “Slow Down,” “No Kidding,” and
“Trouble” will soon be helping motorists on a particularly
dangerous stretch of detour off Interstate 75 northwest of
Atlanta.
State Highway traffic and safety engineer Archie Burn
ham said the 31-mile stretch of U. S. 41 motorists have to
use presents an entirely different set of problems from
driving on the superhighway.
“They don’t expect two-way traffic, pedestrians, left
turns, cross streets, congestion, sudden stops, traffic
signals and many other problems not usually found on the
interstate system,” Burnham said.
The safety official said since 1969, 61 traffic deaths have
been recorded on the road, which runs through Cobb and
Bartow counties.
State revenue increases
ATLANTA (UPl)—State Revenue Commissioner John
Black- mon says revenue collections for August were up
13.8 per cent, meaning the economy of the state is in good
shape.
Blackmon said in announcing the figures Friday,
however, that the economic picture is still not as good as
five years ago.
The commissioner said corporate income tax revenues
were up 70.3 per cent for the month, and that indicates
stable economic growth, although only four or five big
companies pay 90 per cent of the tax and can have a major
