Construction on a large
shopping center north of Griffin
on the Expressway at Mclntosh
road will be under way soon
with an anticipated opening
date of mid 1973, according to
Bernard Halpern, Atlanta real
estate developer.
The center, North Griffin
Square, will be on 48 acres of
land. Plans call for 35 stores
with a total of 200,000 square
feet of building space. Twenty
of the stores will open next year.
There will be parking places for
1,200 cars and each of the 35
businesses will have exposure
to the Expressway. Very wide
sidewalks with greenery also
are planned.
Halpern, president of Halpern
Enterprises Inc., said his firm
is negotiating with two very
large department and discount
store chains, as well as some 15
local merchants who are con
sidering opening branch stores
there. He said a variety of
leasing contracts already have
been signed, but beginning
constructiong hinges on
working out leasing details with
the larger chains. The land
already has been cleared.
He dedined to name any of
the future tenants until all
negotiations have been com
pleted, but said in addition to
the large department store
chains, there will be at least one
large grocery chain with 25,000
square feet of store space and
room for expansion, a chain
cafeteria type restaurant,
theater, a leading 5 & 10 chain,
hardware store, barber and
beauty shops, dry cleaning
business, shoe store, men’s and
ladies’ clothing shops, and
junior shops.
The center will be open six
days a week from 9 a.m. to 9
p.m.
Halpern said his business is
not trying to hurt, but to be a
service to the entire area, in
cluding merchants.
“We feel Griffin is a good
area and overdue for a first
class shopping center,” he said.
Halpern Enterprises has
shopping centers in Smyrna,
Doraville, Duluth, Tucker and
Norcross.
