The eight-count indictment
returned in U.S. District Court
alleged that the seven men
conspired to steal documents
and install electronic eave
sdropping devices inside the
party headquarters located in
the plush Watergate apartment
complex.
The indictment also said
some telephone conversations
originating in Democratic offi
ces had been monitored for
three weeks before five of the
men were arrested in the
predawn hours of June 17 inside
the headquarters.
The five originally charged in
the case were caught by police
who arrived after being alerted
by a Watergate security guard.
Two Indicted Friday
The two additional men
indicted Friday were ex-White
House aides G. Gordon Liddy
and E. Howard Hunt Jr. The
indictment said Liddy and Hunt
fled the scene moments before
police arrived.
The other five men indicted
were James W. McCord Jr., the
former security chief of Pres
ident Nixon’s re-election com

Miami real estate man; Euge

Calf tradition to continue

ONE CALF
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y.
(UPl)—Mayor Frank Garito
will give a live calf to Rodman
Pell of Greenport, N.Y., today
to Continue a 283-year-old
tradition.
Since 1689, the city has been
under obligation to the French
smith and a Barker associate,
and Frank Sturgis, another
associate of Barker’s.
Attorney General Richard G.
Kleindienst, who released the
indictment, said the grand jury
action climaxed “one of the
most intensive, objective and
thorough investigations in many
years, reaching out to cities all
across the United States as well
as into foreign countries.”
The indictment did not
mention any top Nixon cam
paign officials such as former
Attorney General John N.
Mitchell, who served as the
President’s campaign manager
until July 1, or Maurice H.
Stans, the former commerce
secretary who now is Nixon’s
campaign finance chairman.
Democrats Accuse Stans
The Democrats, led by
former National Chairman La
wrence F. O’Brien, had accused
Stans of conspiring to use
$114,000 in GOP campaign
contributions to finance the
Watergate affair. Stans re
sponded Thursday by filing a $5
million libel lawsuit against
Huguenots to pay John Pell,
second lord of the manor of
Pelham, or his heirs “one fatten
calf yearly forever if demand
ed.” Rodman Pell is Pell’s last
direct descendant.
LIKES NIXON BETTER
NEW ORLEANS (UPI)-The
chairman of the board of
General Motors says he is not
against the presidential candi
dacy of Sen. George S.
McGovern, but he likes Pres
ident Nixon better.
Richard C. Gerstenberg said
Friday he “just happens to be
for die other fellow,” not
against McGovern. Gerstenberg
said the President had “done
his best to wind down the
Vietnam War,” and has “conti
nued io improve the economic
picture in the country.”

said Friday in a television

Vote

charged
CHICAGO (UPI)-The U.S.
Attorney’s office says a federal
grand jury has returned 12
indictments charging more than
a score of persons in connection
with alleged vote fraud in Cook
County.
Details of the suppressed
indictments, which were re
turned Friday, were scheduled
to be released at a news
conference today.
Several Cook County election
officials were reportedly arrest

indictments.

The General Accounting Of
fice (GAO), the investigative
arm of Congress, has deter
mined that the funds in
question were funneled through
Nixon’s re-election committee
before being deposited in
Barker’s Miami bank account.
The Justice Department said
the investigation of the break-in
and bugging was completed.
“We have absolutely no
evidence that any others should
be charged,” press spokesman
John W. Hushen said.
He added, however, that
department investigators were
still reviewing the GAO funds
report.
All seven defendants were
ordered to surrender Tuesday
morning at U.S. District Court
for setting of bond for Liddy
and Hunt. Baids will be
unchanged for the other five
suspects who already have
posted it.
