Mrs. Nancy Goldstein buys light bulbs from Boyd Booker of
the Lions Club to get the two day sale started.
Lions light bulb sale
will begin Monday
The annual light bulb sale of
the Griffin Lions Club will start
Monday and continue through
Wednesday. Proceeds will go to
the John H. Edwards Sight
Conservation Fund and be used
for the protection and im
provement of eyesight for needy
persons in the Griffin area.
The Edwards Fund was
established recently by the
Lions Club in memory of Mr.
John Edwards who died two
months ago.
Mr. Edwards was a charter
member of the Griffin Lions
Club and was chairman of the
Club’s Sight Conservation
Committee during the past
year.
In the year prior to his death,
he investigated some 50 cases of
eye deficiencies in Griffin and

The bulbs will be sold from
door-to-door in many areas of
Griffin on Monday and Tuesday
evenings.
Boyd H. Booker is chairman
of the sale. He has advised that
the bulbs have a high voltage
rating for improved
illumination and longer life. The
bulbs come in three assorted

being sold at $2 per carton.

bon committee to determine

them.
At the same time, Carter said
that there are possibly 6,000
persons with a drinking prob
lem working for the Georgia
state government and promised
an effort to stop alcoholism and
drug abuse.
The governor said he believed
that bookstores dealing with ob
scene material and the peep
movies should be closed down
because they are eroding the
morals of the American people.
But he added that recent Su
preme Court decisions defining
obscene material as “that which
violates contemporary commun
ity standards” has made it un
certain as to what powers the
state has to regulate the dis
semination of pornography.
“I think filthy bookstores and
peep movies have gone too
far,” Carter told a Capitol news
conference. “I would like to see
them closed.
“I believe the impact has re
sulted in a loosening of the na
tion’s morals. I can’t comment
on the impact on crimes of a
sexual nature, but I do believe
that pornography has resulted
in the people having a lax atti
tude in sexual matters.”
Asst. Atty. Gen. Harold Hill
was named to serve as tempor
ary chairman of the commis
sion. Other members are Fulton
County Solicitor General Hin
son McAuliffe, the Rev. David
Collins of Atlanta, dean of the
Episcopal Cathedral of St.
Philip; State Rep. Robert How
ard of Marietta; Mrs. Achsah
Nesmith of Alpharetta; and Hal
Gulliver, associate editor of the
Atlanta Constitution.
Carter said that most alco
holics are not derelicts.
“Most are factory workers, or
housewives or businessmen who
live each day an embarrasment
to themselves and a constant
burden to their families, their
employers and, indeed, our
whole society.”
Carter added that “I cannot
claim that we have done an
adequate job in helping the al
coholic.
“But with the passage of the
Hughes bill (authored by Sen.
Harold Hughes, D-lowa, a re
formed alcoholic) ... we are
going to move aggressively to
combat the serious affliction.”
