Bears smash
Clarke, 13-0
By Roger Dix
Griffin’s pass defense should
be better this morning than it
has been in many moons.
If it’s not, don’t blame it on a
lack of practice.
The Bears probably saw

Clarke-Central of Athens throw
as many passes here last night
as they will see in the next three
games combined.
The 41 passes by the
Gladiators didn’t accomplish
very much.
Griffin used a solid ground
game and a rock-hard defense
to whip the team from Athens,
13-0.
The Bears’ defense was so
effective against Clarke-
Central’s running game (it
allowed the Gladiators only
three yards rushing in the first
half) that Clarke finally gave up
trying and went totally to the
air.
Donnie Hix, Clarke’s quar
terback, threw 41 passes. He
completed 13 and had five in
tercepted.

Clarke’s 10 running plays
netted only 26 yards for a 2.6
average.
While Clarke’s running game
was stymid, Griffin’s was piling
up 200 yards on the ground.
Curtis Jones averaged five
yards per carry as he rushed
for 71 yards on 14 carries.
Tony Head, who scored both
Griffin touchdowns, gained 69
yards on 19 carries for a 3.6
average and Daryl Jones
gained 27 yards on six tries for a
4.5 average.
In addition to Daryl Jones
running, he had a tremendous
game punting. He kicked seven
times and averaged 42 yards,
which is outstanding for a high
school punter. Clarke returned
only three of the punts for a
total of 10 yards.
Although Griffin’s offense
gained a total of 234 yards, it
was Griffin’s defense that was
the key to the game.
Clarke brought what it con
sidered a fine defensive team to
Griffin. It was a tough, harding
squad.
However, Griffin’s defenders
beat the Gladiators at their own
game.
Griffin completely shut off
Clarke’s ground game, and
although the pass defense
seemed shaky at times, the
defense wound up playing a
good game.
The five interceptions by
Griffin’s secondary offset the 13
completions on 41 passes.
Terry Willis picked off two
passes, and Tony Head, Walter
Jones, and Gary McDowell
grabbed one each.
Griffin linemen, who stopped
the Athens’ team on the ground
and kept pressure on the passer,
were John Keith Tuggle, Kenny
Hattaway, Charles Gaddy,
David Woolforlk and Jabo
Griffin.
Griffin’s touchdowns did not
come easy. The Bears were
forced to drive 96 yards for the
first one and 69 yards for the
second.
The 96 yard match took 18
plays and nearly all the second
quarter.
Griffin made several
mistakes during the game.
However, none of them came in
the long drive. Usually a high
school team has trouble clicking
off 18 plays without so much as
a five yard penalty.
The drive was engineered by
Quarterback David Skrine, who
replaced starter Stan Tread
way, who suffered a knee injury
in the first quarter.
Curtis Jones, Tony Head,
Daryl Jones and Clarence
Harris handled most of the
running.
However, the longest gainer
on the drive was a 21 yard pass
from Skrine to tight end David
Woolforlk, who had to out battle
