Healthy Namath
ready for Bills
By United Press International
More is at stake Sunday in
Buffalo’s War Memorial Sta
dium than the score of the
game.
The time has come for the
Bills, owners of two of the last
three No. 1 draft choices in the
National Football League, to
fulfill their promise to return to
the contending ranks and the
time has come for the New
York Jets, led by a healthy Joe
Namath, to prove their 1969
Super Bowl season was no
fluke.
Buffalo, by virtue of its
recent poor performances after
many years of dominance in
the American Football League,
drafted 0. J. Simpson, USC’s
great running back three years
ago and Walt Patulski, Notre
Dame’s tremendous defensive
end last January.
Buffalo head Coach Lou
Saban says the Bills are
“probably the youngest and
least experienced team” in the
NFL. But the Bills displayed a
strong running game and an
accurate passing attack behind
quarterback Dennis Shaw as
they jolted Philadelphia, 34-17.
Namath’s in Shape
But New York is not
Philadelphia and with Namath
in shape and on target the Jets
figure to be one of the leading
Super Bowl candidates.
“When you face the throwing
arm of Joe Namath,” Saban
says, “you’re looking into a
cannon and hoping you don’t
get your head blown off. The
Jets are never out of a game so
long as he’s firing and time
remains.”
Maybe Namath and the Jets,
seven-point favorites, are too
much for the young Bills to
handle this early in the season
It’s a bad

Also, the Bills have tradition

On Monday night, Minnesota

while Pete Liske will lead the
Eagles.
Oakland comes into its
opener after dropping the final
two games in the pre-season.
Ken Stabler was at quarterback

get the starting call Sunday but
Lamonica has said that he feels
it will be Stabler.

Pro softball
coming
to Atlanta?
ATLANTA (UPI) - This city
which already has major league
baseball, football, soccer, bask
etball and hockey may get
professional softball.
Mitch Litman, executive di
rector of Major League Softball,
Inc., of Harrisburg, Pa., said
Friday the prospects look good
for a franchise assigned to an
unidentified potential club own
er.
Litman said his league would
be introducing major league
professional softball to North
America for the first time next
spring. A three-month season,
May through July, is planned.
Litman’s plans call for a
league with six teams in the
United States and two in Can
ada in its first year. Ex
pansions would be made in sub
sequent years to eventually
include 24 teams.
Atlanta Stadium could be
used for the game and Litman
said he has been assured that
dates could be provided when
the Braves are out of town.
The playing field could be
easily arranged to accomodate
the games, he said.

Committee to study
US future in games
By JANE DENISON
WASHINGTON (UPI)-The
Senate, noting the problems and
tragedies of the Munich Olym
pic games, voted Friday to set
up a presidential commission to
study whether American ath
letes should participate in
future Olympiads.
If established, the commis
sion would be ordered to review
not only the “objectives” of the
Olympic movement, but also
“the manner in which Olympic
games are administered” and
report its preliminary findings
prior to the February, 1973
meeting of the International
Olympic Committee (IOC).
The commission proposal was
attached to a bill pledging $15.5
million in federal aid to the
1976 Winter Olympics in Den
ver.
Sen. John V. Tunney, D-
Calif., sponsor of the amend
ment, said it was in response to
the “petty bickering, partisan
judging, outrageous blunders
and, finally, unparalleled barba
rism” of the 1972 Summer
Games in Munich.
His amendment was adopted
by voice vote shortly before the
bill was passed, 59-3. It now
goes to the House.
The Tunney amendment calls
for creation of a seven-member
commission to be appointed by
the President. It would review

Padres 9 Norman
whiffs 15 Reds
By JOEY FROHLINGER
UPI Sports Writer
Fred Norman didn’t believe it
and neither did Cincinnati.
Norman pitched a seven
hitter and caught 15 Reds
batters looking at strikes
Friday night as the Padres
punched out a 1-0 victory over
the Reds.
Norman was in disbelief after
being told his strikeout total
had set a new club record.
“Did I really strike out that
many? Gee, I thought it was
only eight or nine,” said the
lefty hurler.
Redlegs pilot Sparky Ander
son was likewise a disbeliever.
“We just seem to bring out
the best in their pitching. We’ve
scored only one run in the last
three games against them and
that’s awful hard to believe.”
Clarence Gaston’s bat sup
plied Norman with all the
support he needed with a fourth
inning homer. The victory
squared Norman’s record at 9-9
and was the sixth shutout of the
season for the lefthander.
The loss kept the Reds from
drawing closer to their “magic
number” of eight before they
clinch the National League
Western Division title.
Over in the Eastern Division,
Pittsburgh shared a similar
losing fate as St. Louis romped
to a 10-4 victory, keeping the
Pirates’ “magic number” at
three.
In other National League
games, Chicago topped New
York, 9-3, Los Angeles edged
Houston, 4-2, and Philadelphia
downed Montreal, 5-3.
In the American League,
Baltimore beat New York, 3-1,
Boston stopped Cleveland, 4-3,
Detroit edged Milwaukee, 2-1,
Minnesota eked past Kansas
City, 4-3, and Oakland stag
gered Texas, 12-3.
Willie Crawford and Wes
Parker hit run-scoring singles
and Claude Osteen pitched a
four-hitter for his 17th win to
lead the Los Angeles Dodgers
to victory over the Houston
Astros.
Jim Hickman hit a grand
slam home run and Jose
Cardenal and Billy Williams
chipped in with round-trippers
as Chicago downed New York
and Milt Pappas won his eighth
