Without attracting too much attention, changes have
been occurring in the Middle East that some observers
believe could hold the beginnings of a peaceful settlement
of the Arab-Israeli conflict.
It is worth noting immediately, however, that it is a
view not shared by Israeli Premier Mrs. Golda Meir. The
74-year-old Mrs. Meir told a group of American women
recently she doubted if she would see in her lifetime an

Changes occurring in Middle East
Arab leader who wanted to make peace with Israel.
These are among the events bringing about a change in
the Mideast picture:
—Hie failure of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat’s at
tempts to build new relationships with Western Europe
after his expulsion of 20,000 Soviet military advisers and
the limited success only of his attempt to re-establish
close friendly ties with the Soviets.
—Hie split within Palestine guerrilla ranks, apparently
triggered by the decision to limit guerrilla attacks upon
Israel from Lebanon and Sadat’s endorsement of a
proposal that the Palestinians concentrate upon creation
of a govemment-in-exile in order to gain political
recognition.
—lsrael’s decision announced by Mrs. Meir last Sept. 12
“to strike at the terrorist organizations wherever we can”
and without prior warning. The decision was the
outgrowth of the slaying of 11 members of the Israeli
Olympic team in Munich, West Germany.
Israel’s subsequent surprise aerial attacks upon Syria
and Lebanon contributed to mounting pressures upon
Sadat at home.
Sadat declared his failure to strike back at Israel in
Lebanon’s defense was due to Soviet failure to supply him
with MIG-23 fighter bombers capable of “striking in
depth” against Israel.
As result of his inaction, Egyptian prestige among other
Arab nations plummeted and unrest within his own armed
forces mounted.
LOS ANGELES—CIair Windsor
(shown in 1966 photo), star of
silent movies who played flirty
flappers in bobbed hair in the
“Jazz Age” films, died of a
heart attack. In her later years
Miss Windsor, 74, turned to
painting, and her oils were
widely exhibited. (UPI)

chased
in desert
MOJAVE, Calif. (UPI)—
“Start running or you’ll be shot
like dogs.”
The two young hitchhikers
didn’t hesitate—they ran as fast
as they could into the desolate
Mojave Desert, fleeing from
the shots that never came.
Charles Ferber, 20, and Mark
Pierce, 17, both Rosamond,
Calif., told police the threat
came from two men who picked
them up while they were
hitching a ride on California
Highway 14 north of Mojave.
They said the men drove
them a short way in their
pickup truck, then halted and
pulled out a gun. The hitchhi
kers said they were ordered to
put their hands behind their
heads and run or be shot.
No bullets were fired, but Los
Angeles County authorities la
ter arrested Joseph Sargent, 23,
Ontario, Calif., and Thomas
O’Brien, 24, Pomona, Calif., in
the Lancaster area and held
them for Kern County authori
ties.
No basis
LOS ANGELES (UPI)—A
city law making it illegal to
play coin operated jukeboxes
between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. was
ruled unconstititutional Tuesday
by Superior Court Judge Robert
A. Wenke.
The judge said there was no
basis for such a law when the
same ordinance permits the
operation during those hours of
jukeboxes that are not coin
activated.
The law was challenged by
the management of a Holly
wood nightclub, the “Onion
Too,” which also brought suit
against the law banning danc
ing between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m.
