Forest Park
improved
“Forest Park probably is the
best team in the state with an 0-
5 record,” is the way one 6-AAA
coach sized up the Panthers
recently.
The Panthers aren’t 0-5 any
more. Now they are 1-5-1. They
have a tie and victory to show
for their last two games.
Coach Max Dowis feels that
record is misleading.
"Forest Park has solved its
quarterback problem. Some of
their injured players have

returned and now the Panthers
have a good offense to go with
their quick defense,” he said.
After losing five in a row, the
Panthers battled unbeaten
Newnan to a 6-6 tie. That was
some feat, considering Newnan
was being touted as one of the
best teams in the state after
beating highly regarded R. E.
I>ee, 23-7.
The Panthers came back last
week with a victory over
Newton County.
Coach Dowis rates Forest
Park a fine football team since
its offense has finally caught up
with its already tough defense.
The Panthers may be a little
harder to defense than most
teams. They shift nearly every
play, sometimes having as
many as four players flanked.
Those flanked players, plus
the passing of the Forest Park
quarterback is expected to put
plenty of pressure on Griffin’s
secondary.
Griffin will be close to full
strength for the crucial 6-AAA
game.
The only doubtful starter
right now is tackle Charles
Gaddy, who was injured in the
Lee game.
Gaddy still is hobbled by the
bum knee. Coach Dowis may
not even try Gaddy against
Forest Park.
Randy Pass, who is rated
among the finest linemen in
Georgia, may be shifted from
his linebacker spot to tackle to
fill the vacancy provided Daryl
Jones, also a linebacker, is
ready to play defense. Jones
was injured in the LaGrange
game. He sat out the Rockdale
County game and saw only
limited offensive duty last
Friday in Thomaston.
If Jones is ready, he probably
will return to an outside
linebacker spot, David Wool
forlk will move to the middle
(replacing Pass) and Pass will
move to tackle.
Coaches are also considering
other changes in the event
Gaddy is not available.
Another thing that worries
Coach Dowis is the possibility of
a let-down after Griffin’s 14-7
victory over R. E. Lee.
The Forest Park game is
sandwiched between that
victory and the important game
coming up next week against
Newnan, the second place team
in 6-AAA.
Coach Dowis feels the Bears
must concentrate heavily on
Forest Park “or we may be in
for a rough night.”

Moultrie holds
number 1 spot
ATLANTA (UPI) - For the
second week in a row, the
Moultrie High Packers knocked
off an unbeaten AAA power
when they downed Warner Rob
ins 42-19 Friday night.
And for the second week in
a row, Moultrie is ranked on
top of the UPI Coaches poll of
high school football teams. The
Packers, now 7-0, rolled up all
42 points in the first half a
gainst last week’s fifth ranked
team and coasted to the vic
tory.
Second-ranked lakeside also
blasted a previously unbeaten
opponent Friday night. The
Vikings played an almost-per
fect game in destroying Peach
tree, 49-0.
Valdosta remained third after
a 48-0 win over Monroe, and
Southwest-Atlanta, a 21-0 win
ner over Archer, held onto
fourth in the state’s only poll
covering all classifications.
Douglas County squeaked by
Dalton 13-7 to remain undefeat
ed in AAA competition and
move up one notch from sixth
to fifth.
The biggest and most sur
prising jump was Thomasville’s
emergence in the poll. The
Bulldogs have almost gone un
noticed since losing their open
er to Valdosta by a six-point
margin.
But high school coaches
in the state are noticing Thom
asville, and selected them sixth
in this week’s poll. The Bull
dogs are now 7-1 after blasting
Ixrwndes 44-20 last week.
Two undefeated AAA schools,
Laney and Waycross, .switched
positions in this week’s elite
group. Waycross moved up to
seventh with an 18-0 win over
Glynn Academy, while Laney
dropped to eighth after a 49-6
win over Westside of Augusta.
Warner Robins, taking a
sound defeat at the hands of
top-ranked Moultrie, dropped
from fifth to ninth. And Wash
ington-Wilkes, 8-0 in class A
competition, remained tenth fol
lowing an open weekend.
