Peach Bowl
to invite FSU?
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.
(UPI) — Florida State will be
invited to the fifth annual
Peach Bowl at Atlanta Stadium
Dec. 29 if the Seminoles win
their last game of the season
Saturday at South Carolina, the
Fort Lauderdale Sentinel report
ed today.
George Crumbley, executive
director of the Peach Bowl, said
in Atlanta Wednesday that the
game selection committee had
narrowed its choice to Florida
State or North Carolina State as
one of the two teams.
“We will definitely take one
of those teams,” Crumbley said.
“And perhaps both. With their
outstanding offenses, a pairing
of the two would make a hell
of a game.”
Crumbley emphasized, howev
er, that if both win Saturday
and the Peach Bowl selects only
one of them, then Florida State
will receive the invitation be
cause it has the better record.
A victory over South Carolina
would give the Seminoles an 8-3
season. N. C. State plays Clem
son Saturday and a win would
give the Wolfpack a season rec
ord of 7-3-1.
The main obstacle to an FSU-
N.C. State pairing appears to
be the Peach Bowl’s desire to
offer a more intersectional fla
vor.
The opposition for FSU or NC
State, Crumbley explained,
would come from a list that in
dudes lowa State. Texas Tech.
Arizona State and West Virgin
ia. It is also possible that Geor-
gia, with a win over Auburn
Saturday, could move into con
tention.
Crumbley said most of the
teams on the opposition list
have been linked to another
bowl, with the possible excep
tion of West Virginia, winner of
the second Peach Bowl in 1969.
lowa State is headed for the
Liberty Bowl, Texas Tech the
Sun Bowl, Arizona State the Fi
esta Bowl and Georgia has also
been tied to the Liberty Bowl,”
Crumbley said.
Officials at Florida State in
Tallahassee said they were
completely unaware of any
Peach Bowl possibility. But one
source close to the Seminoles
did say, “If there’s any chance
for a bowl, it’s the Peach Bowl
and that hinges on a win over
South Carolina.”
