caster — little Tampa over
Miami’s Hurricanes — har
lumph! You’ll remember we
wrote, “The Hoople Three
Star special of the week is
the University of Tampa to
shock intrastate rival Miami,
13-8.” And shock them Tam
pa did with a 7-0 victory—
um-kumph!
But enough of this chit
chat. Most of the football in
terest this week will be cen
tered on Los Angeles where
Southern California meets
UCLA, the last obstacle in
the Troians’ path to the Rose
Bowl. The Hoople nod goes
to John McKay’s Trojans
but they will have to be at
their best to fight off the en
raged Bruins who were am
bushed last week by Wash
ington. Southern Cal will run
its record to 10-0 with a nar
row 19-17 triumph—hak-kaff!
The two remaining major
unbeaten powers, Michigan
(9-0) and Alabama (9-0),
meet Purdue and Virginia
Tech respectively. Michigan
will have the rougher assign
ment but will, according to
the Hoople System, prevail
over rugged Purdue by a 28-
21 count. Alabama, which
has never lost to Virginia
Tech in six previous meet
ings, will keep its record in
tact with a relatively easy
42-16 victory.
Several other powers look
ing to move up in the nation
al ratings—Penn State (8-1),
Notre Dame (7-1), Texas
(7-1) and Auburn (7-1)—all
figure to win. Here’s how we
call ’em: Penn State 42, Bos
ton College 20, Notre Dame
32, Miami (Fla.) 14, Texas
22, TCU 15, and Auburn 29,
Georgia 13.
Oklahoma’s Sooners, also
7-1 for the year, will sharpen

Flames feel refs
defeated them
TORONTO (UPl)—The Atlan
ta Flames were burning an an
gry red Wednesday night after
their 2-1 loss to the Toronto
Maple Leafs. They felt the offi
ciating, not the Maple Leafs,
beat them.
“We played real well, but the
referee played real well, too,”
said Atlanta Coach Bernie Ge
offrion.
Geoffrion pointed to what he
considered three unjust penal
ties against the Flames in the
third period as particularly
damaging.
“We play three men against
their five for six minutes. How
do we win?” he asked.
The Flames jumped to a 1-0
lead in the first period on John
Stewart’s goal, but Toronto
came back to score twice in the
second period to wrap up the
NHL
standings I

The victory was Toronto’s
first in five games and ended
a four-game unbeaten string by
the Flames, who muffed a
chance to move to within one
point of pacesetting Philadel
phia in the National Hockey
League’s Western Division.
The Flames return to Atlan
ta tonight to take on the New
York Islanders in the Omni.
