Price controls

WASHINGTON (UPI) -A
member of the government
Price Commission has suggest
ed “possible modifications” in
the administration’s economic
stabilization program next year
including the elimination of
price controls from all retail
sales and rental units.
Robert F. Lanzillotti told the

margin rule and the possible
merger of the Price Commis
sion and Pay Board.
Lanzillotti, who emphasized
he was speaking only for
himself and not giving any
official government view, said
that “an acceleration in infla
tion is likely if controls were
terminated at this point.”
He added, however, that the
economy’s behavior in the year
since the wage-price freeze
“suggests the desirability of
incorporating some wage-price
discipline where market re
straints are weak, to supple
ment fiscal and monetary
tools.”
The authorizing legislation for
the current wage-price control
program expires next April 30.
The administration must decide
well before that time whether
to extend or modify the
program for an additional
period or simply scrap the
controls.
Lanzillotti said he favored, as
“possible modifications” to the
current program, “an early end
to rent controls” and “eliminat
ing controls altogether over the
retail sector.”
