Head, Jones rated best
running duo in 6-AAA
Statistics for 10 Griffin High
football games show why Tony
Head and Curtis Jones are the
best one-two running punch in 6-
AAA, and probably among the
best pair of runners in Georgia.
Head rushed for 892 yards,
missing the 1,000 mark by just
108 yards.
Jones gained 653 yards.
Like Head, Jones may have
reached the 1,000 mark if he
hadn’t been used sparingly.
Because Griffin was blessed
with a lot of running backs, the
starters sometimes didn't play
much more than a half.
Griffin was also fortunate
enough in several games to
have such a commanding
halftime lead that Coach Max
Dowis used reserves most of the
second half.
Another reason Head and
Jones weren’t used on offense
more was that they both per
formed both ways and coaches
rested them as much as
possible.
Head averaged carrying the
ball only 12.8 times per game
and Jones averaged just 9.9
rushes.
Those aren't many rushing
attempts for runners the caliber
of Head and Jones.
“I believe they could have
gained 1,000 yards,” Coach
Dowis said today. “But we
didn’t concentrate on that. We
