Election complaints
increase 25 percent
WASHINGTON (UPI) -The
Fair Campaign Practices Com
mittee reports it received 25
per cent more complaints of
dirty politics during this year’s
election campaign than it did in
1968.
The committee’s executive
director, Sam Archibald, said
Sunday his records of the 1972
campaign showed more candi
dates than ever before tried to
“distort the facts, to falsify
political rhetoric, to misinter
pret the facts.”
Many of the offenses oc
curred in campaign mailings,
Archibald said in a UPI

Instead of the usual objec
tions about unfair television
campaign spots, Archibald said,
“we got a large number of
complaints about dirty letters.”
“We received only three
complaints this year about
dirty, overstated television ad
vertisements in political races,”
Archibald said.
Candidates, he said, "seem to
be going the direct mail route
to the voters.”
Archibald said many of the
complaints were from candi
dates objecting to the abuse of
the free mailing privilege given
to members of Congress. Under
the law, only nonpolitical
mailings are allowed.
Archibald proposed that rath
er than restrict all free mailing
privileges, both challengers and
incumbents should be permitted
to make an equal number of
mailings to the voters.

DUCK GROUNDED
BRISBANE, Calif. (UPI) —A
duck used to rip shingles off
roofs, chew them and drop the
pieces all over. “People don’t
like that kind of thing,” said
policeman Steve Stanton.
So, during the weekend, the
duck had its wings clipped.
If that doesn’t solve the
problem, said Stanton, “We’re
hoping for duck season.”

Queen Elizabeth
Prince Philip
married 25 years
By WILLIAM F. WRIGHT
LONDON (UPI) -Queen
Elizabeth n and her husband
Prince Philip marked their 25th
wedding anniversary today with
Britain in a holiday mood. Mere
than 20 visiting royalty from
the European continent joined
them in the celebration.
Security officials banned four
student demonstrators from
serving at a Buckingham
Palace celebration banquet. It
was the only hint of controver
sy as the nation marked the
occasion—as it did the wedding
day 25 years ago—with fan
fares, flags, the pealing of
church bells, a school holiday
and a royal procession of horse
drawn carriages through the
capital.
The royal couple will attend a
thanksgiving service at West
minster Abbey where on Nov.

Athens Eight
trial scheduled
ATHENS, Ga. (UPI) -Seven
students and an instructor were
scheduled to go on trial here to
day on charges stemming from
a confrontation in the ofice of
University of Georgia President
Fred C. Davison.
The group, calling themselves
the “Athens Eight,” were
charged with criminal trespass
ing last spring when they al
legedly staged a sit - in to de
mand a meeting with Davison
over what they believed was a
crackdown in university hous
ing policy.
Another 25 students were ar

married her handsome Greek
born third cousin, then a
lieutenant in the Royal Navy.
Among the visiting royalty
were exiled King Constantine of
Greece, his Danish queen, Anne
Marie, exiled King Michael and
Queen Anne of Romania, the
Grand Duke of Luxembourg
and the ruler of Leichtenstein.
The four male students, all
students at a catering course at
Thanet Technical College, were
banned after Buckingham Pa
lace asked the college if any of
them had participated in any
demonstrations.
A college spokesman said the
four participated in a demon
stration earlier this month
against a rule at the college
against girls wearing slacks to
classes and boys wearing their
hair long. They were among 12
students invited by the palace
to wait on tables at the
banquet.
but they were levied $75 fines
and given one-yard suspended
sentences after pleading guilty.
The group contended the uni
versity began a quiet effort to
tighten housing rules for on
campus living in dormitories
after Montezuma attorney Carl
Savage led an attack on what
he claimed were “budding com
munes” in the dorms.
Savage testified before a
hearing of the state Senate Uni
versity System of Georgia com
mittee that he saw many drunk
en students, including males, in
his daughter’s dormitory.
