Griffin Bears up
tempo of practice
The Griffin Bears increased
the tempo of practice today as
they prepare to meet Lakeside

“We’ll do some hitting today
in group work,” Coach Max
Dowis said.
The Bears will not scrim

“It’s too late in the season for
that,” the coach said.
Griffin expects to be at peak
strength for the playoff game —

Tech, lowa State
in Liberty Bowl
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (UPI)-
Georgia Tech and lowa State
will meet in the 14th annual
Liberty Bowl Dec. 18.
“We have signed two of the
most exciting and interesting
teams in the country this season
for the Liberty Bowl,” said A.F.
“Bud” Dudley, founder and
executive director of the
classic, after the opponents
were named Saturday night.
“We’re extremely pleased lowa
State and Georgia Tech have
accepted bids.”
The bids were extended after
Georgia Tech grabbed a 30-7
victory from Navy and lowa
State lost to Missouri 6-5.
Georgia Tech is now 6-3-1 for the
year, while lowa State is 5-3-1.
“Both teams are equal as far
as the ratings are concerned,”
said Tim Treadwell, chairman
of the bowl selection committee,
“And we think they will provide
points per game over the
regular season.
At the same time, Griffin’s
defense held 10 opponents to an
average of only 8.6 points per
game.
After allowing 26 points to
Decatur in the opener, the
Bears averaged giving up less
than a touchdown per game
over the next nine.
Despite the explosive offenses
of both teams, most observers
feel that defense will be the
determining factor in the
crucial playoff gdme.
Reserve forwards are Kathy
Murphy, Beth Grant, Kathy
Coker and Kathy Williamson.
The reserve guards are
Deborah Cox, Marcia St Clair,
Beth McGee and Charmel
Parks.
The “B” girls have a 1-0
record. They opened the season
last Friday with a 39-32 victory
over Stockbridge.
a tremendously exciting
contest.”
lowa State Coach Johnny
Majors said receiving the bowl
bid helped take some of the
sting out of the close loss to
Missouri.
“I don’t know whether to
shout for joy or cry,” Majors
said. “I think we’re deserving of
a bowl bid, and it’s great to be
coming to Memphis for the
Liberty Bowl.”
