Nebraska wanted
to play Alabama
MIAMI (UPI)-The
Nebraska Comhuskers aren’t
exactly saying that second
ranked Alabama ducked them
this year when it came around
to selecting a bowl game to go
to, but you can tell it’s on then
minds.
After the selections were
finally made official Saturday it
was fifth-ranked Nebraska vs.
llth-rated Notre Dame in the
Orange Bowl and Alabama had
chosen to play No. 6 Texas in the
Cotton Bowl.
“We would have played
Alabama again if we could
have,” said Coach Bob Deva
ney, whose Cornhuskers
trounced Kansas State 59-7
Saturday. “But there is nothing
we can do about it.”
Devaney said Alabama Coach
Paul “Bear” Bryant had told
him on the telephone that “his
players had decided where they
wanted to go.
“I have to respect that,” said
Devaney. “I’m not criticising

prestige dropped a notch this
past weekend when the Big
Eight scored a 5-4 victory in
bowl berths—the first time
another conference has sent
more teams than the SEC to the
post-season games.
The SEC is sending second
ranked Alabama to the Cotton
Bowl, lOth-ranked Auburn to the
Gator Bowl and seventh-ranked
Louisiana State and 13th-ranked
Tennessee to the Astro-
Bluebonnet Bowl.
Diat’s pretty good represen
tation but the Big Eight has
Nebraska (Orange), Oklahoma
(Sugar), Colorado (Gator),
lowa State (Liberty) and
Missouri (Fiesta) all lined up
for bowl trips.
The SEC might take some
consolation in that Liberty
Bowl-bound Georgia Tech is a
former conference member.
But this is the first time in eight
years what the SEC hasn’t
landed 5-6 bowl berths to lead
the way.

Nebraska flanker Johnny
Rodgers was a little more
outspoken:
“I’d rather play Alabama
than Notre Dame. I hope when
the ratings come out, they take
into consideration the fact that
Alabama had every opportunity
to play us.”
Nebraska beat Alabama 38-6
here New Year’s night.
Notre Dame Coach Ara
Parghian said his players had
expressed a preference for
playing in the Orange Bowl. He
said they felt Nebraska was as
good as any other team in the
nation and possibly better.
Devaney countered by calling
Notre Dame “a great football
institution with a great football
heritage.”
But it could happen that both
teams will have two losses on
their records by New Year’s
Day.
Nebraska plays archrival
Oklahoma Thursday in a
season Saturday with a 52-13
victory over Virginia Tech but
the Tide needs for llth-ranked
Notre Dame to upset topranked
Southern California on Dec. 2 to
win the national championship.
That’s also the day Alabama
closes its season against once
beaten Auburn, a 27-10 winner
over Georgia Saturday.
“They (Auburn) don’t give
you anything,” said Vince
Dooley, whose Georgia team
lost to Alabama 25-7 six weeks
ago. “Auburn-Alabama should
be some game.”
The Tide, which meets sixth
ranked Texas in the Cotton
Bowl, jumped into a 38-0 lead
over Virginia Tech and held
Don Strock, the nation’s total
offense leader, to a net of just 50
yards.
Auburn, which plays Colorado
in the only bowl test between the
SEC and the Big Eight, didn’t
use injured Terry Henley, the
SEC rushing leader, Saturday,
but got 149 yards from
sophomore Chris Linderman.
Louisiana State needed two
long fourth-period scoring
drives to beat Mississippi State
28-14 while Haskel Stanback
scored two touchdowns to lead
Tennessee to a 17-0 win over Ole
Miss. LSU (8-1) and Tennessee
(7-2) each still have two games
to play.
In other games involving
major teams from this region
Saturday, it was Florida 40
Kentucky 0, Tulane 21 Vander
bilt 7, Georgia Tech 30 Navy 7,
South Carolina 24 Florida State
21, Notre Dame 20 Miami (Fla.)
17, Louisville 17 Memphis State
0, Tampa 29 Bowling Green 22,
Utah State 27 Southern
Mississippi 21 and Virginia
Military 17 Chattanooga 0.
The upset by South Carolina
cost Florida State a Peach Bowl
berth, West Virginia (8-3)
getting the nod over the
Seminoles (74) as an opponent
renewal of that annual explo
sive Thanksgiving Day treat
and the Sooners are ranked a
notch above Nebraska in the
latest UPI poll at No. 4.
Nebraska already has an
opening game loss to UCLA and
a tie with lowa State.
And Notre Dame has top
ranked Southern California to
look forward to in two weeks.
Notre Dame’s only loss so far
this year was 30-26 to Missouri.
Orange Bowl officials, who
have been extremely lucky in
getting New Year’s Day’s top
attraction the last two years in a
row, are obviously hoping
fortune will smile again this
year and bring Nebraska a win
over Oklahoma and Notre
Dame a victory over USC.
It will be Nebraska’s third
straight appearance in the
Orange Bowl, a record, and it
will be Devaney’s last game as
coach. He is retiring this year.
for North Carolina State (7-3-1).
Seminole quarterback Gary
Huff, held to a net of 177 yards
by South Carolina, wound up
with a 252-yard average on the
season. That was 11 better than
last year’s nation-leading aver
age, but only good enough for
third this time around.
Tampa, 8-2 with a game to go,
is competing against Southern
Conference champion East
Carolina (9-1) for a Tangerine
Bowl berth.
Florida State is the only Deep
South major college team that
has completed its schedule.
However, Alabama, Auburn,
Georgia, Georgia Tech and
Tulane are idle next Saturday.
Saturday’s schedule features
LSU at Florida and includes
Kentucky at Tennessee, Missis
sippi State at Ole Miss,
Vanderbilt at Tampa, Maryland
at Miami, Memphis State-
Southern Miss at Jackson and
Chattanooga at East Tennessee.
Florida is only 44 but LSU
has reason to be wary of the
unpredictable Gators. Florida,
bouncing back from narrow
losses to Auburn (26-20) and
Georgia (10-7), were impressive
against Kentucky, a team LSU
beat only 10-0.
Nat Moore, the junior college
transfer who has been the
brightest new face in the SEC
this fall, rushed for 146 yards
against the Wildcats—lll in the
first period.

Miami wraps up
division crown
By JOE CARNICELLI
UPI Sports Writer
The Miami Dolphins have left
15 clubs grappling for seven
playoff spots and if guys like
Mike Phipps, Fran Tarkenton
and Steve Spurrier keep it up,
it could be a long struggle.
The Dolphins, continuing their
march to become the first
National Football League team
to go unbeaten in 30 years,
lifted their record to 10-0
Sunday with a 28-24 victory
over the New York Jets. In the
process, the Dolphins captured
the American Conference East
ern Division title, the earliest it
has been won since the NFL
went into its present six
division setup three years ago.
But while the Dolphins made
it look easy in their division,
the battles continue for the
remaining seven berths—one to
each division winner and one to
the “wild card” team or best
second-place finisher. And
Phipps, Tarkenton and Spurrier
were instrumental in seeing
things didn’t get out of hands.
Phipps, who Monday night
threw a TD pass with 40
seconds remaining to help
Cleveland upend San Diego,
maintained the magic touch
Sunday as he threw for one TD
and plunged for another to lift
the Browns to a 26-24 victory
over the Steelers. Don Cock
roft’s 26-yard field goal with
eight seconds left was the
margin of victory that left the
Steelers and Browns tied for
the AFC Central lead with 7-3
records.

Minnesota tied for second at 6-4
in the NFC Central with
Detroit, a 27-14 victor over New

Houston, 23-10, leads at 7-3.
Spurrier threw five TD

McAshan holds
16 Tech records
By DAVID MOFFIT

ATLANTA (UPl)—Eddie Mc-
Ashan will be remembered, es
pecially at Georgia Tech, for
more than just being the first
black quarterback at a major
Southern college.
The senior from Gainesville,
Florida., holds 16 Georgia Tech
records — including most total
yardage in one season (1,763)
and most total career yardage
(4,262).
McAshan set the single-season
total offense mark, previously
held by Kim King, and the rec
ord for touchdown passes in one
season (16), previously held by
Frank Broyles, on Saturday
when he led the Yellow Jackets
to a 30-7 victory over Navy.
The victory gave Tech, which
still has Georgia to play on Dec.
2, a 6-3-1 record and put the
Yellow Jackets into the Dec. 18
Liberty Bowl at Memphis, Tenn,
opposite 12th-ranked lowa State
(5-3-1).
“Their defensive line was a
lot taller than I had expected,”
said McAshan who hit on 12 of
Franco Harris burst 75 yards
for a 24-23 lead.
Pittsburgh seemed to have
wrapped up the game when
Cockroft missed a 27-yard
attempt with 1:58 remaining
but the Browns’ defense held
and Phipps moved from his
own 42 to the Steeler 18 in three
plays to set up the winning
kick.
Tarkenton twice rallied the
Vikings from behind in their
victory over Los Angeles. After
the Rams took a 20-10 lead at
the half, Tarkenton threw 76
yards to Bill Brown, 70 to John
Henderson, five to Brown and
66 to John Gilliam for a 35-point
second half.
Griffin Daily News Monday, November 20, 1972
22 passes for 154 yards, includ
ing touchdown strikes of 11 and
22 yards to sophomore Jimmy
Robinston who now has nine
scoring catches—another Geor
gia Tech record.
“I was having to throw over
them,” added McAshan, who
was intercepted twice. “I’m
just glad we won and will get
to go to a bowl. Every year
you play, you want to go to a
bowl.
And every year McAshan has
played varsity football at Geor
gia Tech, he has gone to a bowl.
The Yellow Jackets beat Texas
Tech in the Sun Bowl two years
ago and lost to Ole Miss in the
Peach Bowl last year.
Tech supposedly dropped out
of the bowl picture two weeks
ago when upset by Duke but a
42-10 win over Boston College
and then the convincing win
over Navy turned that around.
The Georgia Tech-Navy game
should have had a lot more
points. Tech, with 205-pound jun
iors Bruce Southall and Greg
Horne rushing for 107 and 104
yards respectively, missed four

scoring opportunities and Navy
was inside the Tech 15 on five
occasions without scoring.
Southall said the way Tech’s
offensive line was blocking he
and Horne “should have gained
200 yards each.”
Kicking specialist Bobby Thig
pen, who had kicked 54 consecu
tive extra points prior to Satur
day’s game, missed his first try
against Navy but tied a school
record with the first three field
goals of his career.
“It was a big letdown after
going so long and not missing,”
Thigpen said of the extra point
try he shanked to the left. As
for kicking field goals for the
first time, Tech Coach Bill Ful
cher said, “since he is a senior,
we decided to let him try.”
Georgia, Tech’s lone remain
ing regular season opponent,
lost, 27-10, to lOth-ranked Au
burn Saturday and now has a
record so both will be going
for their seventh win when they
meet in two weeks at Athens,
Ga.
lowa State lost a 6-5 decision
to Missouri.
