Says Kissinger will quit
ATLANTA (UPI) — Author Charles R. Ashman said
Sunday night he has been told by confidants of
presidential aide Henry A. Kissinger that Kissinger will
resign to become head of the Rockfeller Foundation.
The source of his information, Ashman said in an
interview on WSB-TV, was “several close friends and
relatives of Kissinger in New York and Washington.”
Appearing in connection with the Eastern release of his
book, “Kissinger: The Adventures of Super Kraut,”
Ashman said Kissinger’s resignation as President Nixon’s
top foreign policy adviser will come following the
appointment of a new secretary of state.
Ashman said he has been told by Kissinger associates
that Secretary of State William Rogers’ resignation will
be among those submitted by cabinet members that will
be accepted by the President. Rogers, he said, hopes to be
appointed to the Supreme Court.
The new secretary of state, according to Ashman, will
be either Gov. Nelson Rockefeller of New York or former
Treasury Secretary John Connally.
“If it’s Rockefeller, in all probability Kissinger will
remain for one year or less for the purpose of working on
elimination of the Berlin wall and other European
problems,” Ashman said. “If it’s Connally, his (Kis
singer’s) resignation will be accelerated.”
Ashman said Kissinger “is looking for a breather and
rejuvenation” and his role in recent diplomatic
negotiations with the North Vietnamese, Russians and
Chinese are “hard acts to follow.”
Kissinger was quoted in the Italian magazine
“L’Europeo” this week as saying it was unlikely he would
ever go back to teaching at Harvard because “there are
more interesting things to do.”
He told the magazine, however, that he hadn’t made any
decision yet “as to whether to quit this job.
“I like it very much, do you know that?” Kissinger said.
Samples trial slated
CUMMING, Ga. (UPI) —The trial of television
personality Junior Samples, accused of public
drunkenness and disturbing the peace, was scheduled to
begin here today.
Samples, the jovial star of TV’s “Hee-Haw” show, was
arrested with his manager, James Gibson, last August.
Cumming authorities said they arrested Samples when he
showed up at the jail to bail out Gibson, who had been
arrested earlier for driving while under the influence of
alcohol.
Deputy Sheriff Norman Peppers said Samples appeared
at the jail “better’n half plastered and running at the
mouth.”
Samples claimed after his release that his arrest
stemmed from his public support for a losing candidate
for sheriff in the Aug. 8 primary.
Clean walkout seen
By United Press International
General Motors officials are faced with two carryover
weekend strikes today in Lakewood, Ga., and Janesville,
Wis., but are expected to have a clean walkout slate this
coming weekend.
Disputes over work standards produced the walkout at
Lakewood, Ga. Friday, its second strike since the union
began its hit-and-run tactics more than a month ago.
Both walkouts are expected to be finished by Tuesday
and no strikes were threatened for the Thanksgiving
holiday weekend.
1-285 route encouraged
ATLANTA (UPI) — The Department of Transportation
said it would begin putting up signs today north of Atlanta
to induce southbound motorists to avoid internal traffic
congestion by traveling on Interstate 285.
Archie Bumham, Department of Transportation Traffic
and Safety Engineer, said the signs will designate 1-285 as
a swift by-pass to Florida.
Bumham said the move hopefully will reroute
southbound travellers onto the perimeter belt and out of
peak-hours traffic on 1-75 and 1-85 near Atlanta.
“Many motorists,” Bumham said, “especially those
hurrying through a Thanksgiving, Christmas, or peak
vacation schedule, do not realize that 1-285 is a good by
pass around Atlanta and often wind up wedged into the
heavy traffic in downtown Atlanta and on the connectors.

Dougherty killing probed
ALBANY, Ga. (UPI) — Dougherty County police
continued their investigation today of the weekend slaying
of a thread mill worker whose body was found hidden in a
wooded area near here Saturday.
Police said they had no suspects in the murder case of
Lee Roy Gonsa, Jr., a 25-year-old father of two who was
described by friends as a “clean cut and a hard worker
who didn’t drink.”
City detectives said Gonsa’s body was found Saturday
by fishermen who were walking along a dirt road near the
Flint River. He had been shot several times and was
partially hidden in underbrush.
Police said there was no identification on Gonsa, who
had apparently been robbed on his way to his work shift at
a thread mill. His bloodstained car was found in Lee
County near the small rural community where he lived.
Authorities said they were able to identify the victim
through a missing persons report filed by his wife, who is
expecting her third child.
