A Single Girl
Needs Lighter
That single girl who possesses a cigarette lighter which
she always keeps in perfect working order can be expected to
make an excellent wife. So advises a student of feminine char
acter. No argument. Still, our Love and War man would like
to point out that a girl who possesses a cigarette lighter that
never works is apt to marry at an earlier age. Not much else.

IN HEBREW, the term
“tukki” meant “peacock.”
Christopher Columbus, that
decisive fellow, thought the
turkeys he picked up in Amer

merchants in Spain, swift with
their own lingo, therefore
identified the bird as the tukki,
and translators eventually cor
rupted it into turkey. Had ab

HOW MANY youngsters do
you plan to have, young lady?
What, only two? So you are
among the 58 per cent of the

would like three. And 17 per

be dandy.

HOW MANY?
Q. “How many high school
football players hurt their
knees or ankles every year?”
A. About 140,000.
Q. “HOW many recessions
since World War II?”
A. Five. In 1953-54, 1957-
58, 1960-61 and 1969-70.
Q. “HOW many Americans
will kill themselves today?
I mean on purpose?"
A. Figure 50.
WHEN I WAS a small boy,
I read in one of William
Randolph Hearst’s Sunday
supplements about a dolphin
that rescued a 2-year-old little
girl who fell over the rail of a
steamship in the Indian Ocean.
Said dolphin reportedly swam
under the child, then carried
her piggyback to shore many
miles away. Bunk! thought I.
Recently the small boat of a
South African woman tipped
over in shark waters. She bled
from leg cuts. Sharks moved
in. Suddenly two dolphins
zipped close, one on each side,
to convoy her toward the
beach. Not once nor twice but
thrice, when she started to go
under, they sandwiched her
upwards again. This account is
documented well enough to
suit me. Apologies to that re
porter who several decades
ago most probably got it right.

Ail obituary
Hanes Jaco Mill died in Griffin
yesterday.
It was bom in 1938 when Howard Collier
moved to Griffin from Montezuma. Its
name was Griffin Knitting Mills, and Mr.
Collier built it from infancy into a
successful and leading industry. He and
his family became prominent and public
spirited citizens of Griffin.
The building on East Broadway street
was constructed about 1887. A buggy
factory occupied it before Mr. Collier
came, and he disposed of numerous buggy
parts after his arrival.
Following World War 11, Colonel Don
Jackson moved to Griffin Sept. 1,1946 with
his wife Ann who is Mr. and Mrs. Collier’s
only child. He joined in operation of the
firm and it evolved from Griffin Knitting

Catching criminals
Under the American system a person is
innocent of a crime until proven guilty of it
beyond the shadow of a doubt. Therefore
the Griffin Daily News seldom comments
on a case which is pending.
It seems to us, though, without any kind
of official count or anything of that nature,
that Griffin, Spalding and state law
enforcement officers have solved more
cases with arrests in recent weeks than
heretofore. This is partly due, of course, to
increased population and the increased
crimes which accompany it, thus
providing more crimes to solve.
Nevertheless, law enforcement officers
have been solving one crime after another
That was some movie on tv Sunday
night, “Patton”.
It has received rave notices from the
critics, been shown at the movies in
Griffin, and finally got to the tube. It was
worth staying up until about 12:30 to watch
from beginning to end.
Patton is the story of a man, the famous
World War II general who commanded the
Third Army in Europe. Today that army is
headquartered at Fort McPherson and
thus is of especial interest to Georgians.
The man was an interesting one, and it took
some like him to win the most devastating
war in history. Nobody could approve all
his actions, but he did help win. Survival
was the question of those unhappy days. It
was just as Sunday School teacher Joe
Dutton told his class this past Sunday; a
nation which had worshipped God turned
Am I wrong
feeling this way?
I enjoy shaking hands with our minister
on Sunday mornings when leaving the
sanctuary. In our church, however, there
are several members who get there first,
monopolize his time, and prevent the
visitors from even greeting him. Don’t you
think that if they want to have a long
discussion, they should make an ap
pointment, and not inconsiderately hold up
the line? I am a bit bitter about this. Am I
wrong in feeling this way? E.H.
Yes, I believe you are. For one thing,
your attitude creates physical disorders,
not to mention spiritual illness.
Sometimes greeting the minister could
be a little Sunday morning “ego trip”. You
might be anxious to let the pastor know
you are present, say some flattering word
to him, or let him see how nice you look.
That is probably not the case, but it could

Mr. Collier and Mr. Jackson sold the mill

in North Carolina. Mr. Collier died in
January of 1971 while vacationing on a
cruise ship. Mr. Jackson remained with
Jaco until Feb. 1, 1971.
Yesterday Hanes-Jaco died.

in Griffin, in Spalding County, and
throughout the state.
One reason for this is that they are better
trained than in the past. Also they have
better facilities and despite isolated
instances which point to a lack of it, better
support by the public.
It is not commenting upon a pending
case to say that the surest way to stop
crime is to apprehend and punish
criminals. So it is encouraging to law
abiding people to note that the law is
catching and the courts are punishing
increasing numbers of them. So mought it
be.
Patton
to worship the devil, Hitler.
It took blood and guts to win the war, and
“Old Blood and Guts” is what Patton was
called. (“Our blood and his guts,” one foot
soldier said in the movie.)
And as the Sunday School teacher said, it
took faith in God.
We won the war with Hitler in Europe
and with Japan in the Pacific, but today we
are fighting ourselves as evil runs
rampant within our own nation: drugs,
crime, defiance of constituted authority,
lack of self-discipline, rotting of cities,
graft, corruption. Perhaps the movie
Patton has reminded some Americans that
those who fought and won World War II
accomplished something worthwhile. We
hope so, because if we had not won it they
would be dancing to Hitler’s tune instead
of hopping about and making fools of
themselves and of their own nation.
be.
Os course, it’s a pleasant thing to greet
the minister, but when I attend church, if I
see a big line waiting to greet the minister,
I slip out— knowing that my minister will
understand. Not only that, there are some
people who “need” to shake hands with the
minister. Perhaps they have been alone all
week, and contact with their spiritual
leader can be an inspiration to them. In
any case, this problem is for your pastor to
solve, not for you to worry about.
Remember that God should be the main
attraction in any worship service, not the
minister. One Sunday a worshipper phoned
the church where President Eisenhower
attended, and asked, “Will the President
be in church today?” The answer came:
“No, but God will be present,” and that
ought to be sufficient reason for at
tendance anytime.

Cuba Hijack Move
Good News, But —
By DON OAKLEY
Cuba’s promise to keep the hijackers of that Southern
Airways jet in 4 x 4 x 4 boxes for life is sweet to the ears.
Boiling in oil would be better, but this will do.
Evidently Numero Uno is fed up with his island being
used as a refuge by all kinds of misfits and has decided
to make an example of these three, who had no claim to
political asylum by any stretch of the imagination.
Upon more sober reflection, however, it has to be asked:
By what right does Cuba throw the citizens of another
country in jail? They have broken no Cuban laws, and
even if they had, is there no such thing any more as a
court trial, even a show trial, in Castro’s Caribbean
paradise?
By treating the hijackers in the same way the hijackers
treated their hostages—as expendable objects—the Castro
regime has merely given another demonstration of its dis
regard for human rights.
No doubt the rough treatment of these men will go a
long way toward discouraging the hijacking traffic to
Cuba. If so, that is something to be thankful for.
But it is precisely because such pipsqueak dictatorships
like Castro’s have consistently refused to extradite hi
jackers but have put their own political advantage ahead
of international decency that the hijacking problem arose
to plague the world in the first place.
Half of Us Like Our Banks
At a time when business in general is taking lumps for
its alleged lack of concern about community problems,
bankers have heard some good news.
Pollster Louis Harris turned his microscope on the bank
ing industry recently and came up with the conclusion
that the public sees banks as having greater concern
about life within the community than any other group of
businessmen.
Part of the reason is a public acknowledgement that
banks, because they are sources of capital, are in a better
position than other institutions to influence their com
munities. But it is also due to a growing social conscious
ness on the part of bankers and new policies that thrust
banks into community leadership roles.
Bankers should not become too satisfied, however. Ac
cording to Harris, while 48 per cent of the public rates
banks highly (compared to 32 per cent for business as a
whole), more than half the public feels that there is room
for improvement.
For example, the poll revealed deep questions on bank
ers’ records in the areas of helping minorities and fighting
pollution.
As Harris pointed out in his report to the Foundation
for Full Service Banks, public confidence “is a perishable
commodity.” Americans are turning to bankers in the
hope that their “solid accomplishment in the business
world can be translated into hope and concern in the
community.”
This, he says, is banking’s challenge for the decade.
If Anything, We've Got Grit
There’s one natural resource we don’t have to worry
about running out of.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, about 400 bil
lion tons of “commercially significant” sand are deposited
in the upper 10 feet of the ocean floor off the northeastern,
coast of the United States.
The deposits of this unglamorous but necessary mate
rial are enough to supply the needs of the United States
and the Maritime Provinces of Canada for several thou
sand years.
