Hoople predicts
Griffin will win
By MAJOR AMOS B. HOOPLE
Football Expert
Egads, football followers.
The really big one will be
played in Griffin Friday.
It has been a long time since
Griffin competed in the state
football playoffs.
That drought will end Friday
when -the Lakeside Vikings
arrive here to take on Coach
Max Dowis’ mighty Bears.
Nearly everyone knows by
now that Griffin won the 6-AAA
championship and Lakeside
won the 8-AAA title.
Neither team was defeated in
the 10-game regular season.
Griffin won its league title
without too much trouble.
Lakeside did the same in its
region.
Griffin and Lakeside are
similar in many ways.
Both have high-scoring, of
fensive machines. And behind
each powerful offense are
defensive teams that are as
tough as they come.
Most football prognosticators
are so baffled by the big game
that they aren’t getting in
volved.
Yours truly will not shy away.
This is a real challenge and
that’s the way I like ’em,
hummph.
Griffin scouts haven’t noticed
any weakness in the Lakeside
attack. I must admit the
weaknesses aren’t noticeable
but they are there.
For instance, nearly every
team has at least one bad game
a season. Lakeside hasn’t had
one yet. Who knows, it may
come Friday night?
Another factor that must be

The Old Boy Himself
considered is “breaks.”
Griffin is a team that is known
to make its own “breaks.”
Twenty-two pass interceptions
and 15 fumble recoveries in 10-
games weren’t exactly gifts.
Another thing Lakeside must
contend with is Griffin’s
defense.
That proud defense was
unscored on in its last 10
quarters. Griffin allowed only
86 points over the 10-game span
and at least half of those came
while reserves were mopping
up.
Griffin’s first defensive team
is an extremely stingy outfit.
Offensively, Griffin averaged
over 27 points per game.
Spirit high around
Griffin practice field
Coach Max Dowis said today
that spirit was high around the
Bears’ practice field as the big
game with Lakeside fast ap
proaches.
The Bears’ running attack is
rated one of the best in Georgia.
That running game will be a
great challenge for Lakeside. It
hasn’t been stopped yet and
there’s no reason to believe that
it will be Friday.
Griffin hasn’t needed the pass

Some 10,000 fans are expected

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (UPI) —
Aides to Alabama Football
Coach Bear Bryant made it
clear Tuesday that their boss
feels Ara Parseghian of Notre
Dame is indulging in name
calling and Bryant wants no
part of it.
Parseghian was critical Mon
day of Alabama’s decision to
play Texas in the Cotton Bowl
on New Year’s Day instead of
accepting an Orange Bowl re
match with Nebraska. The
Cornhuskers beat Alabama 38-6
at Miami last Year’s Day.
“What burns me about the
whole thing is that if we at
Notre Dame had ducked the
competition like Alabama is do
ing, we really would have been
blasted,” Parseghian said.
Bryant would not comment
and an aide said the coach “did
not want to get involved in that
kind of namecalling.
“There’s nothing to be gained
by debating our bowl choice,”
the aide said, explaining
Bryant’s position.
Bryant said the bowl decision
was left to the team seniors
and they chose the Cotton Bowl.
“I think we’re playing in the
best bowl we can,” said defen
sive halfback Lanny Norris. “I
think any senior will agree with
that. Texas is champion of the
Southwest Conference and it
looks like they’ll have the best
record of any team we could
play.
“I don’t think we need to be
talking too much about the bowl
right now, however, because it
won’t matter very much what
we do on Jan. 1 if we don’t win
on Dec. 2 (against Auburn),”
Norris added.
Tide quarterback Terry Davis

Coach Harvey Oglesby said.
“We took only 28 shots and
that’s just one a minte,” he
said. Girls normally take ap
proximately 50 shots a game.
“We weren’t trying to freeze
the ball,” he said

Sandra O’Dell three.
also defended the selection.
“When I said we wanted a
change of scenery, I was really
just speaking for myself,” Da
vis said. “Miami is a great
place, but you only get to make
a limited number of bowl trips
and I wouldn’t want to spend
them all at the same place if I
had a choice.
“Os course,” he added, “the
most important thing is to play
well enough during the year to
have a choice.”

Barbara Smiley rolled a 614
