Jackson editor man of the year
JACKSON, Ga. — Doyle
Jones, Jr., editor-publisher of
the Jackson Progress-Argus
and active civic and community
leader, was named Butts
County’s “Man of the Year” for
1972 at the annual award
meeting of the Jackson Kiwanis
Club. Presentation was made
by Ralph Carr, Jr., master of
ceremonies, on behalf of the
Kiwanis Club, sponsors of the
event for the last four years.
Mr. Jones is a native of
Jackson and a graduate of the
University of Georgia, with an
AB degree in journalism. While
at the university he was a
member of Sigma Delta Chi,
national journalism fraternity,
and Psi Chi, national
psychology fraternity.
Mr. Jones served overseas
with the U. S. Navy during
World War II and took part in
the invasion of Okinawa.
Returning to Jackson in
December, 1945, he was
associated with his father and
brother in the publication of the

Progress-Argus until the death
of J. Doyle Jones, Sr. in March
1955 and until Jan. 1,1959 when
his brother, Vincent S. Jones,
sold his interest.
Mr. Jones is a member of the
Jackson Presbyterian Church
where he is a ruling Elder,
Sunday School Superintendent,
teacher of an adult Sunday
School class and a former
Deacon.
He is currently secretary of
the Butts County Democratic
Executive Committee, a
member and secretary of the
Butts County Hospital
Authority, and a former
member of the Butts County
Selective Service Board for
more than 20 years until his
retirement in January.
The 1972 recipient is a
member of the Jackson-Butts
County Planning Commission, a
member of the Butts County
Chamber of Commerce, Inc., a
member of the City of Jackson
Democratic Executive Com
mittee.
Mr. Jones has been a member
of the Jackson Kiwanis Club
more than 30 years, serving as
president in 1955 and often on its
board of directors. He is a
former member from the
Fourth District of the Univer
sity of Georgia Alumni Society’s
Board of Managers and former
vice president, state at large,
for that group. He is a former
member of the Board of
Managers of the Georgia Press
Association, a past president of
the Fourth District Press
Association, and is presently a
director and secretary of the
Board of Directors of Mclntosh
State Bank. Mr. Jones was
recently presented an eight
gallon Blood Donor pin at a
recent meeting of the Jackson
Kiwanis Club.
Mr. Jones is married to the
former Miss Martha E. Griffeth
of Athens who is associated with
him in the editorship of the
Progress-Argus.
The Man of the Year award
was first presented to Hampton
L. Daughtry of Atlanta and
Jackson in 1969. In 1970, the late
Robert Park Newton was the
recipient, while P. H. Weaver
was tapped as 19171’s Man of
the Year.

A Griffin native has been
named postmaster here by
Georgia United Postal Service
authorities. James T. Chappell,
47, a 21-year veteran of the
Griffin post office. They said he
was selected on the basis of
merit, experience and com
prehensive examination.
Chappell, his wife, Jane and
their two children live at 1337
Greenview Drive, Griffin.
Griffin Academy
now taking
applications
Headmaster Walter Welsh
today announced that Griffin
Academy’s seventh grade is
filled for the 1972-73 school year.
He asked that anyone in
terested in enrolling students
for the present seventh grade or
next year’s eighth grade should
contact the Academy and have
their names placed on a waiting
list.

Mr. Hollingsworth
Mr. Paul Hollingsworth, 63, of
225 Little street, died early this
morning at the Griffin-Spalding
Hospital after a short illness.
Mr. Hollingsworth was a
lifelong resident of Spalding
County, son of the late Angie
Nelson Hollingsworth and the
late Maud Addy Hollingsworth.
He was employed for 12 years
by H. V. Kell Co., here and for
the past two years was
associated with Carden
Wholesale Grocers.
He was a member of the West
Griffin Congregational Holiness
Church where he served on the
board of deacons and was
secretary and treasurer of the
Sunday School.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Ruby English
Hollingsworth; two sons,
Nelson Hollingsworth and
Aubrey Hollingsworth, all of
Griffin; two brothers J. E.
Hollingsworth of Fort Valley
and Walter Hollingsworth of
Griffin.
Funeral services will be
conducted Tuesday afternoon at
3:30 o’clock from the West
Griffin Congregational Holiness
Church. The Rev. Lewis James
and the Rev. Euel Gilstrap will
officiate and burial will be in
Oak Hill cemetery. The body
was carried to his residence this
afternoon and will lie in state at
the church for 30 minutes before
the funeral. Haisten Funeral
Home is in charge of plans.
Mrs. Hulon
Mrs. Truma Eason Huckaby
Hulon of 738 West Poplar street,
widow of Mr. L. L. Hulon, died
Saturday afternoon after an
illness of several months.
Mrs. Hulon was born in Upson
County, moving to Griffin 70
years ago. She was one of the
oldest members of the First
United Methodist Church.
She is survived by three
daughters, Mrs. Chester
Roberts, Mrs. Otis Dawson,
both of Griffin, and Mrs. H. J.
McDanal of Birmingham, Ala.;
a son, Joseph H. Huckaby of
Griffin; a brother, J. J. Eason
of Thomaston; three grand
children and five great
grandchildren.
Funeral services were con
ducted Sunday afternoon at 4
o’clock from chapel of Pittman
Rawls Funeral Home. The Rev.
Dumas B. Shelnutt officiated
and burial was in Oak Hill
cemetery.
Mrs. Fenn
Mrs. Willie Cowan Fenn, 80,
of Route two, Gray, died at her
residence Sunday afternoon.
Her death was unexpected.
Mrs. Fenn was born in Henry
County, daughter of the late
William Franklin Cowan and
the late Sara Evans Cowan. She
was the widow of Mr. Ernest
Virgil Fenn and a member of
the Methodist Church.
She is survived by a sister,
Mrs. H. H. Turner of College
Park; two sisters-in-law, Mrs.
Ethel Miller of Marietta, Ohio
and Mrs. H. F. Cowan of
Uvalda.
Funeral services will be
conducted Tuesday afternoon at
2 o’clock in Haisten’s chapel.,
The Rev. A. G. Van Lan
dingham will officiate and
burial will be in the County Line
Baptist Church cemetery in
Jenkinsburg. The body will
remain at Haisten Funeral
Home in Griffin. Friends may
visit the family at the home of
Mrs. E. N. Lewis, 431 Lakeview,
Highland Mills.
Mr. Britt
Mr. Joseph Manning Britt of
Moye street, Barnesville died
this morning at the Dublin VA
hospital after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Britt was born in Bar
nesville and a veteran of World
War Two. He was a retired meat
cutter and a member of the
First Baptist Church in Bar
nesville.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Willie Mae Collins Britt;
two sons, Capt. Jerry Britt, U.S.
Army, Germany, and William
Patrick Britt of Barnesville;
three sisters, Mrs. Bessie Lifsey
of Barnesville, Mrs. Allison
Brown of Culloden and Mrs.
John Jester of Kathleen; a
brother William Bryant Britt of
Atlanta.
Funeral plans will be an
nounced by Haisten Funeral
Home of Barnesville.
Mr. Turner
Mr. Arthur Raymond Truner,
80, of 326 Lee street, Bar
nesville, died Sunday night
after an extended illness.
Mr. Turner was a member of
the Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife,
Mrs. Willie Mae Cook Mc-
Collough Turner; two
daughters, Mrs. Margaret
Maxine Elliott of Houston, Tex.,
and Mrs. Mary Sue McDaniel of
Barnesville; one step-son,
Herbert Dewey McCollough of
Barnesville; two sisters, Mrs.
Jim Smith of Barnesville add
Mrs. Myrtice Maddox of For
syth; a brother, Jim Turner of
Barnesville; five grandchildren
and several nieces and
nephews.
Funeral services will be
conducted Tuesday afternoon at
2:30 o’clock from the Calvary
Baptist Church with the Rev.
John Autry and the Rev.
Cleveland Scoggins officiating.
Burial will be in the Fincher
cemetery in Meansville. The
body will remain at Hubbard
Funeral Home in Barnesville
until carried to the church to lie
in state for 30 minutes prior to
the service.
Mr. Blackwell
Mr. Henry Blackwell, for
merly of Griffin, died Saturday
in Detroit, Mich., where he had
made his home for several
years.
Mr. Blackwell was the son of
Mrs. Minnie Blackwell of
Griffin.
Funeral arrangements will be
announced by Millers Funeral
Home pending the arrival of the
body from Detroit.
GARDEN CLUB
The December meeting of the
Camellia Garden Club will be
held Wednesday at the hone of
Mrs. L. C. Olson, 733 East
College street. All members are
requested to attend.
