Big Ben
leaning
LONDON (UPI) - Just the
rumor of it was enough to set
members of Parliament asking
worried questions in the House
of Commons.
Rumor had it the clock tower
of Big Ben, that universal
symbol of London that survived
the Nazi blitz of World War 11,
was leaning like the Tower of
Pisa.
Opposition Labor member
Marcus Lipton was attacking
the government anyway, for the
money it was proposing to
spend building an underground
parking lot under the Palace of
Westminster, which houses the
British Parliament.
And what about the tower of
Big Ben, which soars above the
northeast corner of the palace?
He had heard reports that the
famous tower was tilting to the
northwest by several inches
and that “under conditions of
great secrecy” work was being
done to reinforce its founda
tions.
The tower houses both Big
Ben, the mighty bell which tolls
the hours, and the clock which
many people mistakenly call
Big Ben.
It fell to Reginald Eyre,
undersecretary for the Depart
ment of the Environment, to
try to calm Lipton.
“There has been anxiety
about the effect of the work on
foundations in the vicinity and
there has been a slight degree
of settlement at the north end
of Westminster Hall,” he told
the Commons.
It was true that the tower
had a list of 9% inches to the
northwest, a spokesman for the
department said later, but most
of this dated from the time of
its construction, just over 100
years ago. Since 1960, when the
tilt was discovered, it had
moved only of an inch.
The slight movement which
had taken place in the tower
and the buildings of the palace
during the first stages of
excavation for the parking lot
had been monitored from the
beginning and immediate steps
had been taken to check it,
Eyre said.
“I am advised there is no
need for alarm,” he told the
members.
In any case, there was a
plumb line hanging permanent
ly in the clock tower so that
any further tilt could quickly be
measured.
The Tower of Piza tilts 17.4
feet from the perpendicular.
