Bombers strike 6th straight day
SAIGON (UPI) -U.S. bom
bers struck military targets
deep into North Vietnam for
the sixth consecutive day today
amid reports from Nixon
administration officials the
bombing might be temporarily
halted for 24 hours during the
celebration of Christmas.
In Saigon, South Vietnamese
intelligence sources reported
the death of Gen. Vo Nguyen
Giap, North Vietnam’s defense
minister and top military
strategist. The sources said
Giap was killed Friday in what
may have been a time bomb
explosion set off by a North
Vietnamese dissident. Giap, 60,,
gained prominence in the North
Vietnamese military when he
led Communist forces in the
defeat of the French at Dien
Bien Phu in 1954.
As U.S. bombing of North
Vietnam continued, the U.S.
command in Saigon reported
the losses of two more giant
852 Stratofortresses bringing to
10 the number of the big
bombers down since the start
of the new series of raids
Monday. The command said the
two planes were shot down
Friday morning by antiaircraft
fire northeast and southeast of

Hanoi. The crews—six men on
each plane—were listed as
missing.
The command said Friday it
would not list the specific
number of airmen missing over
north Vietnam because the
information could aid the North
Vietnamese in capturing those
fliers who may have avoided
Communsst ground patrols.
Nixon administration officials
in Key Biscayne, Fla., said
today the President would
order a temporary halt in the
bombing during a Christmas
cease-fire. However, the spokes
men made it clear Nixon would
order a resumption of the
strikes after the holiday pause
if Hanoi refuses to resume
peace negotiations with a
“constructive attitude.” The
Communist holiday was to
begin at 1 p.m. Christmas Eve
(midnight EDT Dec. 23) and
the government truce was to
start at 6 p.m. Christmas Eve
(5 a.m. EDT, Dec. 25).
The overall effect of the
renewed bombing of North
Vietnam has yet to be assessed
and administration officials
have maintained a news

blackout on bomb damage.
Hanoi has charged the bombing
has struck civilian as well as
military targets. Friday, there
was a report from the Swedish
foreign ministry in Stockholm
that a 1,000-bed hospital called
Bach Mai was destroyed in one
of the raids.
Jean-Christophe Oeberg, Swe
den’s ambassador to Hanoi who
is in Sweden for Christmas,
said his embassy reported over
the radio that “many physi
cians and nurses were killed.
We do not know how many
patients died.” Oeberg said
852 s attacked the hospital.
The North Vietnamese today
listed the names of five more
Americans allegedly captured
following bombing raids over
North Vietnam. The broadcast,
monitored in Saigon, said all
five men were captured Friday
and all were based at U-Tapao,
Thailand.
The government of Egypt and
India charged Friday that their
embassies in Hanoi suffered
bomb damage Thursday. Hanoi
Radio reported earlier that the
Cuban Embassy was bombed
Thursday morning.
