Marbury
The West Virginia Mountaineers' problem this season is
that they can give it, but they take it, too. They have
the fourth most explosive scoring team in the nation,
with a 30.5 points-per-game average, but their oppo
nents were also overaging 21 points a game against
them. The offense is led by quarterback Bernie Galiffa
(nephew of former Army All-American quarterback Arnie
Galiffa). The team rushing leader is Kerry Marbury,
who scored 18 touchdowns (second best in the country)
and averaged 5.2 yards per carry. The defense s best
game was the last one, holding Syracuse to 12 points.

Mizlou Productions.)
North Carolina St.
(7-3-1)
Shaw
Like the Mountaineers, North Carolina St. is also a high
scoring, wobbly-defense-type team. N.C. St. started off
with a disappointing (for them) tie against Maryland
in the opener. Then soon lost to Georgia and North
Carolina. But with quarterback Bruce Show and rusher
Stan Fritts, the team bounced back and won six straight
before losing the last game of the season, to Penn State,
37-22. (Penn State, by the way, is the lone common op
ponent for these two teams. West Virginia lost to Penn
St., 28-19.) Fritts, with hurt leg, is a question mark.
Prediction: West Virginia 42-17
Sun Bowl
North Carolina
(10-1)
North Carolina, unbeaten in the Atlantic Coast Con
ference, lost only to powerful Ohio State, 29-14, this
season. The defense, with five all-conference players
including end Gene Brown and tackle Eric Hyman, reg
istered two shutouts and held a third team to only a
field goal during the last half of the season. North
Carolina is a high-scoring team and is led by quarter
back Nick Vidnovic, who threw 10 touchdown passes,
and rusher Ike Oglesby. The offensive line is also a
strong point, with All-American guard Ron Rusnack.
(Dec. 30; television: 1 p.m. EST on CBS)
Texas Tech
(8-3)
Texas Tech had some rough moments this year, but
finished second in the tough Southwest Conference, any
way. It lost to league leader Texas, 25-20, to Arkansas,
24-14, and was run off the field by TCU, 31-7. Its de
fense seemed to falter in the latter part of the season,
and must shore up to stop a good North Carolina of
fense. Quarterback Joe Barnes is the bulwark of the
offense. He passed for 1142 yards and had a 51 per
cent completion average. Tailback George Smith was a
superb runner with 6.9 per carry average.

Bryant
The Colorado Buffs will try to salvage a somewhat dis
appointing season. They were a pre-season favorite to
win the Big Eight title and even harbored thoughts of
top national ranking, until Oklahoma State upset them
early. The Buffs have a powerful running game, high
lighted by all-conference back Charlie David. Colorado
averaged 250 yards a game rushing. The passing attack
is also formidable, with Ken Johnson throwing from
dropback patterns. Middle guard Bud Magrum, a 24-
year-old Vietnam veteran, anchors a solid defense, along
with defensive back Cullen Bryant, an NEA All-Ameri
can selection. (Another highlight: Ralphie, Colorado s
buffalo mascot.)
(Dec. 30; television:
4 p.m EST on ABC.)
Henley
Auburn, in contrast as opposed to Colorado, began the
season with little ballyhoo. It was picked sixth in the
Southeastern Conference —when the Pat Sullivan-Terry
Beasley passing show graduated. But the Tigers lost only
one game, to LSU, and shocked Alabama on the last
game of the season with a fourth quarter score that pro
duced a 17-16 come-from-behind victory. Auburn's of
fense is centered around running back Terry Henley,
who accounted for almost one-half of Auburn's rushing
game before being briefly sidelined by a knee injury.
Prediction: Auburn 23, Colorado 17
Orange Bowl
Rodgers
After two straight undefeated seasons, the Cornhuskers
went into a relative slump this season, losing to UCLA
and Oklahoma and tying lowa State. But they still have
a rosterful of All-Americans, including Heisman Trophy
winner Johnny Rodgers and middle guard Rich Glover,
voted the best lineman in the country. They outscored
opponents, 461-91, averaged 440 net yards per game.
On offense, Rodgers does everything except keep the
statistics but quarterback Dave Humm, running back
Gary Dixon are worth watching, too. End Willie Harper
joins Glover on voracious defensive unit. This will mark
Nebraska's third straight Orange Bowl appearance. It
will be final game for retiring coach Bob Devaney.

Marx
Irish lost to Missouri and were one of Southern Cal's vic
tims. This year's Notre Dame team lacks the great back
of the Guglielmi-Lattner-Hornung-Huarte mold but does
have a comer in soph quarterback Tom Clements and a
talented receiver in split end Willie Townsend. Main
stay of defense that shut out three opponents is All-
American tackle Greg Marx, with Townsend's younger
brother, Mike, leading the pass defense. This is the
school's first Orange Bowl appearance and their first
meeting with Nebraska since 1948. The Irish also have
an old grudge to settle against the Cornhuskers. Nebraska
was only team to win three games against Knute Rockne.
Prediction: Nebraska 27, N.D. 10

Pruitt
The Sooners averaged 478 yards per game in total of
fense, most of it with a gluttonous ground game. The
main fulfillment of the Wishbone offense is flashy Greg
Pruitt, but the other halfback, Joe Wylie, fullback Leon
Crosswhite and quarterback Dave Robertson are also
accomplished runners. On those rare occasions when
Robertson deigns to pass, he usually looks for Pruitt,
Wylie or tight end Al Chandler. Also watch work of
All-America center Tom Brahaney. Defense lacks big
names but it held Nebraska to 14 points in Sooners'
upset win (Oklahoma's only loss was to Colorado).

Hufnagel
Nittany Lions have lost only two games in the last two
years, both to Tennessee. Coach Joe Paterno, one of the
most civilized and successful of coaches, has a versatile
quarterback in John Hufnagel, who set 16 school records.
His passing and option play adventures are comple
mented by the running of tailback John Cappelletti,
who gained more than 1,000 yards as the dot in the I
formation. Tight end Dan Natale is the most receptive
receiver Oklahoma's earthshaking offense will confront.
Paterno's rotating 4-4 defense, anchored by end Bruce
Bannon and linebacker John Skorupan, with ex-quarter
back Gregg Ducatte leading the secondary. Oklahoma
ranked a bit higher in polls but Penn State should win.
Prediction: Penn State 23, Okla. 22

REARDON FIRES HIMSELF
BALTIMORE( UPl)—General
Manager Terry Reardon fired
himself as head coach of the
American Hockey League Balti

named veteran defenseman Jim

Morrison will become a player

Reardon blamed recent hock

of the World Hockey Associa

The Trojans easily topped the national polls in sashaying
to an undefeated season. They piled up a composite score
of 425-117 and didn't let anybody get closer than nine
points (30-21 win over Stanford). Soph tailback Anthony
Davis scored 18 touchdowns, rushed for 1034 yards and
ground game is bolstered by Rod McNeill, Sam Cunning
ham and quarterback Mike Rae. Rae and understudy
Pat Haden also mounted substantial passing offense,
using John McKay (coach's son), Charles Young, Lynn
Swann and Davis as main receivers. Defense is led by
linebacker Richard Wood and larcenous back Artimus
Parker, who intercepted six passes during the season.
Not a good team to bet against in the office pool.

Gradishar
Arch conservative Buckeyes lost only to Michigan State.
(For those who thrive on chain matchups. Southern Cal
beat Michigan State by 45 points, Spartans beat OSU by
seven.) They rely as usual on methodical ground game,
with both freshman Archie Griffin, Harold Henson rush
ing for more than 700 yards, Henson scoring 20 touch
downs on ground. Quarterback Greg Hare is also strong
runner. Defense adequate, holding opponents to average
290 total yards per game (USC's defense allowed 230-
yard average). Linebacker Randy Gradishar is mainstay.
Prediction: USC 38, Ohio State 13
