Walking among
best exercises
By JOHN WATTS
Copley News Service
Dear John: I am lost in a
maze of claims and counter
claims about exercise and
what is best for you. What do
you think? — Fred N.
Dear Fred: Assuming that
you are in the older person
age bracket because you
wrote to this column, you
can’t beat walking as an exer
cise.
It is something that nearly
everybody can do. It gets you
out in the fresh air, besides.
You don’t have to walk fast
and you don’t have to walk
far. Comfortable shoes and
clothing are indicated, of
course.
There are many habits one
can develop that involve good
healthy walking. Like walking
to the store or to the movies.
But the best habit of all is the
habit of regularity. Do it ev
ery day.
Dear John: Reading your
column in Lincoln News about
senior citizens wanting to sell
craft items, I’ve had a
thought. The fad of garage
and yard sales might be their
answer. Perhaps getting arti
cles from others like them
selves who are handy and
then advertising it as a “Se
nior Citizen Handcraft Sale.”
I’m sure they would do well
and have no middleman to
pay off. Hoping this will help a
little. — Evelyn J., Bridge
port, Mass.
Dear John: I saw the article
in the paper that this couple
needs help in selling craft
items. My husband and I ran a
vegetable stand for 23 years.
He passed away one year ago
with a highly malignant
tumor on the brain.
As he was 60 years old he
couldn’t collect Social Secu
rity. He was in the hospital
and convalescent home for
one year. I went there to take
care of him every day as we
would have had to have a spe
cial nurse. No insurance cov-

ered him in the home. It was
very expensive.
I put up signs now and have
good luck selling old furni
ture. I love to meet people.
Maybe this couple are too far
away from me. But I thought
it doesn’t hurt to try. I sure
wouldn’t want 50 per cent.
Could you tell me where they
are located? Could I help? —
Mrs. J.H., Waterford, Pa.
Dear Mrs. J. H.: Waterford,
Pa., meet San Diego, Calif.
But I think you may have
helped already. Your exam
ple of courage should be an in
spiration, not only to the
woodwork couple — who have
had a lot of offers of help —
but to thousands of readers
throughout the country. Stick
in there!
Dear John: Today’s Dis
patch carried the enclosed in
quiry from Joe, who seems
anxious to experience some
formal education in an aca
demic setting. It is very likely
that you are going to have
Joe’s question asked again
many times. Therefore, I am
using my experience as the
special services librarian of
Black Hawk College (Moline,
DI.) to forward some informa
tion to you on the new pro
gram, CLEP, which is tai
lored exactly to Joe’s pro
jected plan to study while he
continues to be employed.
The CLEP program is being
offered at junior colleges in
this country to help Joe, who
in the World of Work has
gained knowledge which may
be translated into college
credit. ... Through CLEP
placement examinations Joe
can be placed in a college
class where he can use the
knowledge he has gained in
life experiences to continue
his education.
