Good time to fight
pine bark beetles
By JACK SMITH
County Agent
Spalding County had its share
of the pine bark beetle this past
spring and summer and now is
the time to attack and mop up
beetle strongholds. Unless
woodland owners, homeowners,
and industry and public
woodland managers pitch in,
chances are southern pine
beetles could be more
destructive in the future than
they have been in the past.
Beetle activity is at a low ebb
during the winter and over
wintering beetle colonies will be
in trees which they attacked in
late fall.
A clean-up of all infested trees
during the winter is most ef
fective in reducing spring and
summer attacks. Infested trees
should be cut and processed as
quicly as possible if a timber
sale can be made.
If a commercial sale is not
possible, the trees-including all
branches-should be piled and
burned. To insure effective
control, the entire bark should
be burned. In cases where
burning is not always possible
or practical,. a thorough
spraying with BHC or Lindane

mixed in No. 2 fuel oil will offer
control.
But, if a homeowner has
several yard trees close to the
house or shrubbery, then mix
the BHC or Lindane with water
and spray those trees at least 20
feet up the trunk. Better
penetration of the BHC or
Lindane will be obtained using
No. 2 fuel oil, but the fuel oil will
damage shrubs and grass so
water is best used as a carrier
around the home. Apply spray
to the point of run-off, allow it to
soak in and repeat again.
Cutting infested trees without
quick utilization is futile and do
not attempt to salvage infested
trees for fire logs. Without
treatment, the “fire logs” serve
as bark beetle brooders.
Don’t wait till next spring to
see if an infestation is going to
continue its spread as winter is
the time for an effective offense
against pine bark betties. If you
require more information on
pine beetles, call the County
Extension Office.
