HH DR. LAWRENCE E. LAMB
Its J ust habit
Oils early rise harmful?
A
By Lawrence Lamb, M.D.
Dear Dr. Lamb—l am 24,
married and in pretty good
health. All my life my dad
conditioned Sis and me to
“rise and shine” very early.
As a result, I cannot sleep
after about 7 a m. Since I am
a schoolteacher, this suits
me fine. Unfortunately, my
husband and I entertain a
lot on weekends ’til all hours
and have friends stay over.
During the week, we hit the
sack late (midnight) and
people are constantly telling
me that I’m nuts —and my
body must have seven or
eight hours sleep a night.
My 30-year-old sis is just
like me and we average five
or six hours sleep a night.
We feel fine, though our
husbands are worried over
our lack of sleep. We do
have dark circles under our
eyes—but those have always
been there. We take vitamin
supplements but, because of
everyone’s fussing, now we
are getting worried.
Even though I have dark
ened the bedroom, I simply
cannot sleep past 7. If I do
sleep more than eight hours,
I feel groggy all day. Please
advise. I’ve tried afternoon
naps, but I cannot sleep.
Dear Reader—The key to
your problem is in your own
statement that you feel fine
and are in pretty good
health. There is no set rule
for how many hours of sleep
a person needs. Some people,
like yourself, need only five
or six hours of sleep—and
some apparently even less.
Others need 10 hours. We
are all individuals with dif
ferent needs. Sleep is neces
sary mostly for the proper
function of the nervous sys
tem but the amount varies.
Many sleep patterns
are habits, which are often
formed early in life. I sus
pect that the brain organizes
itself to a given rhythm in
infancy and early childhood
and the daily cycle then ac
tivates brain mechanisms
thereafter that control our
own day-night cycle. The in
dividual brain patterns be
come ones’ own individual
biological clock. While we
can make some adjustments
in our habits —like learning
to take an afternoon nap—
the basic rhythm is prob-

Darkening the room, then,
won’t change the basic, in
herent brain rhythm, al
though the sudden cue of
light or noise may disturb
your usual cycle and cause
you to lose sleep. This is
what happens on globe
circling trips. The change in
day-night cycle geographi
cally is out of phase with
one’s biological clock and
the body has to make an ad
justment to reset its cycle.
After, the readjustment, the
individual returns to the
original cycle of six or eight
or 10 hours sleep.
The dark circles under the
eyes have nothing to do with
your sleep habits. The color
is from the veins around the
eye under the skin. The blue
blood here causes the color.
Everyone has the same blood
in this region. Some have
more fat around the eye and
the veins are deeper and
cannot be seen. It only tells
me that your face is rather
thin—which is more a func
tion of your eating and
energy-expending habits and'
familial characteristics than
a matter of sleep.
Dear Dr. Lamb—l’ve read
your column daily and I
haven’t seen anything which
' can help me with my weight
problem. I am 23 years old,
five feet four, and weigh 94
pounds. All my life I have
been thin. I seem to have a
good appetite and eat three
meals a day plus between
meal snacks. I’ve been to
several doctors and all they
do is give me vitamin pills
and tell me I should be
happy with my weight. But
I’m not. There are days that
I’m so tired and depressed
that I can hardly do my
housework. But some days I
feel real good and do it with
out feeling worn out.
None of the doctors I’ve
been to have checked my
thyroid or anything of this
sort. All they do is check my
heart and my blood and say
there is nothing wrong with
me.
I don’t want to be a glam
orous movie star, Dr. Lamb.
All I want to do is gain a
few pounds and feel good
and not be so tired most of
the time. My condition has
made me very snappy with
my children for things that
I shouldn’t be upset about.
Also, it has affected my sex
life with my husband.
Please help me and tell
me what type of doctor I
should see if there is any
thing I could do about my
problem.
Dear Reader —Your doc
tors have done more than
you think. If you had an
over-active thyroid your
heart rate would usually be
high. By simply looking at
your skin, hair, and physical
appearance, they have
learned a great deal about
the possibility of abnormal
thyroid function. Even so,
you would probably like to
have a check on your glands
(endocrine) and for this you
need to see an endocrinolo
gist. Ask your county medi
cal society for the name of
one or make arrangements
to see one through the medi
cine department of your
nearest university medical
center.
The weight problem doesn’t
mean so much by itself but
combined with your fatigue
it deserves careful evalua
tion. There are many ill
nesses that can cause under
weight. Years ago tubercu
losis was an important con
sideration. Glandular prob
lems, thyroid and others,
can be a factor or it can be
more of a familial charac
teristic. Medical disorders
can result in the body using
more calories than you eat
and hence weight loss occurs
if you don’t eat a lot.
If you really have no ap
parent medical problem, you
need to eat a diet which con
tains more calories per vol
ume, this includes more
sweets, more fats, and less
roughage, and at frequent
intervals.
Exercise that involves
weight lifting will help to in
crease muscle mass. Excess
calories will help to build fat
stores. You may think you
already get enough exercise,
particularly with the chil
dren. But often much of
modern housework does not
involve weight lifting of the
kind needed to build muscle
mass. It is more straining
than training. Fat deposits
and muscle mass are the
main factors affecting weight
in a mature person.
First, you need to know
that you don’t have an under
lying medical problem—such
as diabetes, tuberculosis,
chronic infection, or glandu
lar problem. Then you need
a review of your nutrition to
see how many calories you
are really getting before de
ciding on a course of action.
