Rufus made ’em
eat their words
LAGUNA HILLS, Calif.
(UPD—Rufus, once tagged the
reluctant lion, may never
prompt the headlines of his
famous predecessor Frazier,
but his first feat couldn’t have
been better timed by a
Hollywood talent agent.
Officials at Lion Country
Safari announced that lioness
Zona, one of five wives Rufus
assumed after Frazier’s death
last July, gave birth to three
healthy cubs Christmas Eve
and Christmas morning.
Skeptics had to eat their
words. Some doubted that the
15-year-old Rufus, near 70 in
human terms, could replace the

Frazier, who sired 33 cubs in 18
months.
Rufus was tagged reluctant
shortly after he arrived from a
Kansas zoo and was released
into the wild animal preserve.
He gave little indication he was
interested in Frazier’s pride
and often retreated to the
familiar security of the park’s
night shelter.
But apparently he went into
action immediately. The lion
ess’ gestation period is 95 to 105
days, making Christmas day
about the earliest possible date
for the birth of Rufus’ first
offspring at the park.

One of 587 inmates
fails to return
ATLANTA (UPI) — One of 587 inmates in the Georgia
prison system failed to report back in time for Christmas
furloughs, the Department of Offender Rehabilitation said
Monday night.
The prisoners, from institutions across the state, were
given 36-hour leaves under a new law passed by the
legislature.
The first leave-period began at 6 a.m. Friday through 6
p.m. Saturday and the second ran from 6 a.m. Sunday to 6
p.m. Monday, a department spokesman said.
The absentee, an inmate at the county correctional
institution in Columbus, said he was delayed returning
Monday night because of car trouble.
The program was begun in July, and since then a total of
935 inmates, who are either trusties or on a workrelease
program and have been screened by their warden and the
department, have been granted holiday or emergency
furloughs.
