shootout.
The shooting occurred on
Detroit’s Northwest Side in a
neighborhood where they were
investigating a tip involving a
robbery and shooting suspect,
police spokesmen said. They
spotted their assailants lurking
in a shadow between two
homes.
Gunfire started as they
approached the two men and
the officers got off one shot
themselves before falling, po
lice said.
Homicide officers ruled out
the possibility of a “setup.”
The officers involved were

BANGKOK (UPI) -Four
self-described members of the
Arab guerrilla Black September
crganization seized the Israeli
Embassy today, took five
hostages and threatened to kill
them unless 36 prisoners held in
Israel were released.
The guerrillas gave Israel an
8 p.m. EST deadline to release
the prisoners.
In Tel Aviv, Prime Minister
Gold Meir called her cabinet
into emergency session to
discuss the situation. Govern
ment sources said Mrs. Meir
received a report on the seizure
from the Israeli Ambassador to
Thailand Rehavam Amir, who
lives inside the Bangkok
compound but was not there
when the four Palestinians
seized the building and hosta
ges.
The four men, said by police
to be armed with automatic
weapons, burst into the embas
sy building in downtown Bang
kok shortly after noon. They

The suspects are accused of
holding up a supermarket in
Chattanooga, Tenn., last week
and then taking three hostages
in a futile escape attempt from
state police.
Chattanooga Assistant Chief
of Detectives James N. Davis
testified before U.S. Magistrate
Allen L. Chancey Jr. that he
and other law enforcement offi
cers surprised the bandits dur
ing an attempted robbery last
Thursday.
Davis, only witness appearing
at the hearing, said one suspect,
18-year-old Oliver Peterson, was
taken into custody. However,
the handcuffed youth was then
released to the other robbers in
exchange for a group of store
employes and customers being
held hostage.
The four other suspects were
identified as Paul W. Berry, 25;
Willie L. Combs, 23; Homer Lee
Barnes, 23; and Felix B. Lundy,
21. All were from Atlanta.
Police said the men were
given an escape car in ex
change for their hostage. They
then led police on a two-state
chase into Georgia, keeping
three hostages for protection.
Authorities finally stopped the
car near Cartersville, Ga., and
persuaded the men to give
themselves up. The hostages
were freed unharmed.

Area Cordoned Off
Police cordoned off the area
and moved in reinforcements
carrying automatic weapons.
Deputy Foreign Minister Cha
ractchai Chunahawan spoke
briefly with the guerrillas by
telephone and his secretary
later offered to guarantee their
safe conduct to wherever they
wanted to go if they would
release the hostages. The
guerrillas had no immediate
response.
The Foreign Ministry in Tel
Aviv identified the hostages as
First Secretary Nitzan Hadass
and his wife, Ruth, attache Dan
Beeri and his wife, Rachael,
and attache Pinhas Lavie.
Police said the four demand
ed the release of 36 prisoners
they called “our captured
sisters and brothers in Israeli
jails.”
Among the names was that of
Kozo Okamoto, a Japanese
citizen seized at the Lod
Airport massacre in Tel Aviv
last June.

The Note
The guerrillas’ note said they
did not want to harm Israeli
hostages inside the embassy
but added “if the demand is
rejected we would be free to
treat the staff in the same
manner of murder it treats our
people.”
Israeli Ambassador Rehavim
Amir arrived back at the
embassy in full dress following
ceremonies to invest Thailand’s
crown prince, unaware of the
invasion of the embassy.
He was escorted by police
into a school building opposite
the embassy where he was
joined by Gen. Prapass Charu
sathira, deputy prime minister
and commander of the army.
After his telephone conversa
tion with the guerrillas, Cha
ractchai’s secretary returned to
the compound post. Officials
made no comment but from the
matches of the conversation
which were overheard, it
appeared the guerrillas had
asked to speak with the
Egyptian ambassador.
