Deaths -F unerals
Miss Hooks
Miss Patti Carol Hooks, 11,
died Thursday morning. She
was the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Grover Leon “Bill” Hooks
of 223 Roberts street.
Her mother was before her
marriage Miss Linda Irving.
Miss Hooks was a fifth grade
student at Crescent Road School
and with her family attended
Southside Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she
is survived by two sisters, Mrs.
John Athey of Orlando, Fla.,
and Mrs. Fred Clubb, Jr., of
U.S. Air Force, stationed in
England; two brothers, Michael
Hooks and Jeffrey Hooks, both
of Griffin; grandparents, Mr.
and Mrs. J. G. Hooks of Ramer,
Ala.; two great-aunts and
several uncles and aunts.
Funeral services will be
conducted Sunday afternoon at
3 o’clock in Haisten’s chapel.
The Rev. Benny Rhodes and the
Rev. Jim Stallings will officiate
and burial will be in Milner
cemetery. Friends may visit the
family at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. T. Eugene Wilson, 1113
Glenwood avenue. The body will
remain at Haisten Funeral
Home.
Mr. Cloud
Mr. Henry M. Cloud, 88, of
Atlanta, formerly of Spalding
County, died at the Happy
Haven Nursing Home in Atlanta
Thursday afternoon.
Mr. Cloud was the father of
George Cloud of Griffin.
Funeral arrangements will be
announced by McDowell United
Funeral Home.
Mrs. Lyons
Mrs. Cora Mae Lyons, 65, of
Route three, Barnesville, died
unexpectedly this morning at
■the Upson County Hospital in
Thomaston.
She was the mother of Miss
Bernice Lyons of Barnesville.
Funeral plans will be an

Miss Jordan
Miss Emily Jordan, 75, of 801
Thomaston street, Barnesville,
died Thursday afternoon at
Griffin-Spalding Hospital where
she was admitted Tuesday.
Miss Jordan was a lifelong
resident of Barnesville,
daughter of the late William
Calvin Jordan and the late
Bessie Holmes Jordan. She was
employed for many years until
her retirement in Sept. 1972, by
Coleman Insurance Agency in
Barnesville. Miss Jordan was a
member of the First Baptist
Church in Barnesville.
She is survived by a sister,
Mrs. Ed Fletcher of Millen and
several cousins, among them
Robert Holmes of Griffin and
Shi Holmes of Zebulon.
Funeral services were
conducted this afternoon at 4
o’clock in the chapel of Haisten
Funeral Home in Barnesville.
The Rev. Douglas Winn
officiated and burial was in
Greenwood cemetery there.
Mr. Stray han
Mr. Thomas Strayhan, 64, of
Gay, died Thursday afternoon
at his residence.
Mr. Strayhan was a lifelong
resident of Gay and Meriwether
County. He was a member of
the Mt. Venus Baptist Church of
Gay where he served as a
deacon.
Among his survivors are his
wife, Mrs. Pearlie Lou Strayhan
of Gay; three daughters, Mrs.
Dorothy Price of Detroit, Mich.,
Mrs. Cora Mae Prather of
Alvaton and Mrs. Lois Hall of
Luthersville; two sons, John
Davis Strayhan and Jim
Strayhan of Cleveland, Ohio;
one step-son, Robert Pondexter
of Vero Beach, Fla.; and
several nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements will be
announced by Union Society
Funeral Home of Concord.
Mrs. Edwards
Mrs. Lillie Maye Beverly
Edwards died Thursday at the
Living Center of Griffin.
Mrs. Edwards was the widow
of Mr. Jack Edwards, Sr., of
McDonough.
She is survived by three
daughters, Mrs. Bill Hawkins of
McDonough, Mrs. John Mitchell
of Mableton and Mrs. James
Wilborn of Griffin; two sons,
Jack Edwards, Jr., of Mc-
Donough and B. D. Edwards of
Woodbury; 13 grandchildren
and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be
conducted Saturday afternoon
at 4 o’clock from the Car
michael Funeral Home chapel
in McDonough. Burial will be in
Eastlawn Memorial Park.
Mrs. Maxwell
Mrs. Edna Florence Biggers
Maxwell of 77 Elm street died
Thursday evening at the
Griffin-Spalding Hospital.
Mrs. Maxwell was born in
Coweta County and had made
her home here for 48 years. She
attended the High Shoals
Primitive Baptist Church and
was a retired employe of
Dundee Mills.
She is survived by a daughter,
Mrs. Eula Mullins; a son, Er
nest A. Maxwell, both of Griffin,
two sisters, Mrs. Willie Adams
of Pell City, Ala., and Mrs.
Linda Lawley of Atalla, Ala.;
four brothers, Odell Biggers of
Talldega, Ala., Harry Biggers,
Charlie Biggers, both of
Wetumpka, Ala., and Robert
Biggers of Opelika, Ala.; four
grandchildren, seven great
grandchildren and several
nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be
conducted Saturday afternoon
at 2 o’clock in the High Shoals
Primitive Baptist Church.
Elder Robert L. Torrence and
Elder Paul R. Mann will of
ficiate and burial will be in the
church cemetery. The body will
remain at McDonald Chapel
until carried to the church 30
minutes prior to the funeral
hour. Friends may visit the
family at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Horace Mullins, 77 Elm
street.
Two held
in death
in Butts
Two Flovilla teenagers are
being held in the Butts County
jail on charges of murder and
aggravated assault in
connection with the sadistic
slaying of one man and the
beating and torture of another.
Butts Sheriff Hugh Polk
identified the suspects as
Ronnie Phillips Preston, 18, and
Danny Thom, 19.
The two victims, also of
Flovilla, were found in the back
of an automobile at the Flovilla
home of Mrs. Dovie. Preston.
Grady Thomas Smith, 44,
apparently had died of
strangling on his own body
fluids after his ordeal,
according to Butts Coroner
John Sherrill.
The other victim, Jason
Coleman, 35, was listed in
serious condition at the Sylvan
Grove Hospital.
Both had been beaten and
tortured, by what Sheriff Polk
described as a burning plastic
jug which had been tied to a
stick.
It was reported that both
victims and suspects had been'
drinking and that the incident
was a continuation of a fight a
week or so ago between Preston
and Coleman.
Ted Cornell
Concert pianist
to present
program here
Ted Cornell, organist, pianist
and arranger for the Billy
Graham Evangelistic
Association, will present a
program of music Sunday at
5:30 p.m., at the First Baptist
Church.
He is a concert pianist and
organist, recording artist,
composer and arranger. He also
conducts his own choral group
in concerts throughout the East.
McCornell will present selec
tions from the classical and
religious fields.
The program will include
works of the masters as well as
contemporary composers. Mr.
Cornell will be assisted by Mr.
Cartee, minister of music and
Grace Brake, organist of the
First Baptist Church.

Hie Rev. C. M. Alexander,
pastor of the Antioch Baptist
Church in Atlanta, will be the
speaker for the annual
Emancipation Day celebration
in Griffin Jan. 1. The program
will be at Trinity C.M.E. Church
and will begin at noon on New
Year’s Day. A. C. Touchstone,
Griffin businessman, is
chairman of the Emancipation
Day celebration committee.

to attend Congress
Dr. Ted Wilder of Griffin, has
been named as an area advisor
and liaison representative for
the “Golden Jubilee” Southern
Educational Congress of Op
tometry, Feb. 2-6, at the Mariott
Motor Hotel in Atlanta.
With some 2,800 persons from
40 states expected the event will
be one of the largest of its kind
held. Lectures on such subjects
as refraction, contact lenses
and low-vision aids will be of

The L. M. Dutton family,
whose home and household
possessions were destroyed by
Hospital
chaplains
to meet
The Hospital Chaplains’
Association of the Griffin-
Spalding Hospital will have its
quarterly meeting, Tuesday in
the Hospital library at 11 a.m.
The regular members of the
Association are urged to attend
as well as ministers who are
associate members of the
Association.
Richard McKay, director of
Institutional Chaplaincy of the
Southern Baptist Home Mission
Board, and Archie Mayo of the
Georgia Baptist Convention,
will present information of
other volunteer chaplaincy
programs in the state of
Georgia. A film, “The Hospital
Ministry”, will also be shown.
Lunch will follow in the
hospital cafeteria.
Tools stolen
Thieves removed an
estimated $825 worth of tools
and auto parts from a repair
shop on Experiment street
yesterday.
Police said Bruce Penn, who
operates the shop at 425 Ex
periment street reported the
burglary about 4:20 yesterday
afternoon.
The assorted tools, including
snap-on tools, were all stamped
with the name, “R. E. White
head”. Also missing were a tool
box, two 327 cubic-inch
Chevrolet heads, Hurst four
speed Camero transmission,
intake manifold and four-barrel
396 engine.
Apartment, house
damaged by fire
The Dundee Volunteer Fire
Department answered an alarm
yesterday morning at 10:55
a.m. to Spalding Heights,
Apartment L-11, occupied by
Lee Ann Barkley.
Heavy fire damage was
reported to one bedroom and
smoke damage throughout the
apartment. Cause of the fire
was unknown.
Mrs. Barkley and her three
children were unharmed.
At 7:10 p.m. an alarm was
answered to an unoccupied
house on Futral road, property
of Edward Caldwell. The house
and con tenets were destroyed.

Griffinites have been kind and
thoughtful to them since the
tragedy.
They said they have received
donations of clothing and some
household goods but still need
furniture, linens, and some
kitchen articles.
Friends and members of the
Midway Methodist Church,
where the Duttons are mem
bers, issued an appeal to help
the family. Articles donated
may be left at the Rural Urban
Center at the Spalding Court
house or they may be picked up
by calling the Dutton’s at the
home of Mrs. Gladys Davis on
Brownsprings road.

The low bid of the Carlisle Co.
won the approval of the
Spalding County Board of Com
missioners this morning in a
special called session to award
the county’s fleet vehicle
insurance contract for the
coming year.
Carlisle, bidding along with
four other Spalding County
firms, won the contract with a
premium bid of $3,676.
Other bids were Otis M.
Snider, $5,313; Spalding
Insurance Co., $4,641; Harper
Insurance, $4,217; and the Irwin
Insurance Agency, $7,043.
