Maddox believes:
Watergate may be
‘blessing in disguise ’
WASHINGTON (UPI) - For
whatever political corruption
may be exposed by the Water
gate investigations, Lt. Gov.
Lester Maddox thinks the na
tional ordeal may prove a
“blessing in disguise.”
Maddox journeyed to Wash
ington Wednesaay for a first
hand look at the Senate com
mittee investigating the bugging
scandal, and said later the in
vestigation may make public
officials “more cautious and
careful and less crooked.”
The lieutenant governor said
a “truth and honesty gap” in
the government had troubled
him for a long while, and the
Watergate incident is just one
example of it.

ATLANTA (UPI) - With a
desegregation plan for the
state’s university system finally
approved, the Georgia Board of
Regents can now just hope the
proposal gets a nod of approval
from the Department of Health,
Education and Welfare.
The board’s approval of a pre
liminary plan Wednesday came
under the gun of a federal court
order directing HEW to imple
ment desegregation plans in
Georgia and nine other states if
the states failed to do so by a
June 11 deadline.
The five - point proposal an
nounced by Chancellor George
L. Simpson called for:

$99,000 estate
WASHINGTON (UPI) - Sen
ate Republican Leader Hugh
Scott’s estate is worth $99,000,
less some $12,000 in debts, he
reported Wednesday. Scott gave
the figures during a Senate
Rules Committee hearing on
legislation to tighten campaign
finance laws.
He said his net worth was
substantially down from a year
ago when his assets amounted
to some $150,000.

it leak out, they admit it,”
Maddox told reporters when he
left the hearings.
He singled out President Nix
on’s recent explanations that
his only involvement in the
Watergate incident stemmed
solely from his concerns about
national security.
“President Nixon talks about
national security,” Maddox
said. “You threaten the national
security when you don’t tell the
truth and by your hypocrisy. I
doubt if anyone can give us the
whole truth but President
Nixon, and I doubt if he will.”
Newmen questioned the color
ful Georgia politician about his
feelings on impeaching the
President.
“If President Nixon is dis
honest, and I believe he is, that
changesbetween predominantly
white and predominantly black
schools;
— Private fund - raising pro
jects by individual institutions
to subsidize minority students;
— Extension of present de
velopmental and remedill pro
grams;
— Addition of new vocational
and academic programs be
tween predominantly black and
predominantly white institu
tions;
—Upgrading college cam
puses through work with local
developmental groups.
A spokesman said Simpson
and his staff will write a more
comprehensive plan for submis
sion to HEW.
Peter Holmes, director of the
Office of Civil Rights of HEW,
said in a May 19 letter to Simp
son that Georgia “has failed
adequately to plan for the viable
desegregation of the predomi
nantly black institutions.”
Holmes urged Simpson to sub
mit specific proposals for each
school, along with a timetable
and a projection for student-fa
culty desegregation for each
school year during the plan’s
operation.
HEW Tuesday gave the re
gents until June 30 to devise a
specific desegregation plan for
predominantly black Fort Val
ley State College.
is worse than being im
peached,” he answered. Nixon,
he said, is a good “politician
tactician.”
“But he works both sides of
every issue and the middle
too.”
Maddox, escorted to the Sen
ate hear ingsby committee mem
ber Sen. Herman Talmadge, D-
Ga., limped into the Senate
chamber. He was injured while
riding a bicycle a month ago,
but said he discarded crutches
for his trip here.
