Dr. Lawrence E, Lamb
Back and chest pains
They may be digestive problems
By Lawrence E. Lamb, M.D.
Dear Dr. Lamb — Can you
help me? For four years now
I have gone to several doc
tors and even had X rays
for my problem. They either
say I’m too young for my
symptoms, or they don’t
know what it is that’s wrong.
And the last one said he
thought I was out of my
mind.
For the past four years I
have had severe chest pains.
My age is 22 and I have had
four children. I have been
awakened with my chest ach
ing. It felt like it was being
crushed and I had a hard
time breathing. It seemed to
start down in my back and
work its way up into my
chest and ache clear into my
back. The pain is so severe
that I sometimes had to get
a shot for the pain. The long
est it has lasted is about five
hours.
I also have trouble in swal
lowing my food. I take small
bites and chew it up as well
Elvis sends tips
soaring in Tahoe
By NANCY ANDERSON
Copley News Service
HOLLYWOOD - I thought
there’d be some rich dining
room captains at the Sahara
Tahoe after Elvis’ recent
opening there, so many big
tips were crossing palms in
exchange for good tables.
Tens and twenties were fly
ing all over the place.
However, a hotel bus driver
who delivered me to the Reno
airport the next morning as
sured that the captains
wouldn’t keep the hefty gra
tuities but, rather, would pool
them to be divided amongst
all dining room personnel.
He also said that no star
creates the excitement at Ta
hoe that Elvis does, which
isn’t surprising, since the
same holds true in Vegas and
everywhere else Presley ap
pears.
Col. Tom Parker had
stirred up a bit of excitement
himself at the Lake resort by
accepting delivery there of his
new Cadillac station wagon.
The driver who’d met Elvis
when he’d flown into the Ta
hoe airport said he’d failed to
recognize the star at first be
cause El was wearing a hat
with a broad, soft brim and a
purple cape.
Now who else did he think
would come to Tahoe dressed
like that I wonder?
I visited Elvis in his dress
ing room just before he went
on, and thought he looked
tired. But, once he hit the
stage, he was the super
charged super-star who
drives the girls crazy.
A young woman sitting near
me whose husband had tipped

as possible, it feels like sand
paper going down. The pain
is located where my ribs
come together. I have also
had X rays for this. I drank
some chalky fluid and the
doctor said he found nothing.
This started about four years
ago too. I have a lot of trou
ble with gas and acid. Doc
tor, I just don’t think I can
go through this much longer.
I hope and pray you can help
me. Thank you.
Dear Reader—Every chest
pain is not a sign of heart
disease. From your symp
toms alone I would be in
clined to think that you do
not have heart disease at
your age.
Heart pain does not cause
pain in the back and it is not
associated with difficulty in
swallowing. More likely you
are having spasms of your
digestive tract, including the
esophagus. This can cause
severe chest pain mimicking
the pain of a heart attack.
$lO for their near-ringside

thought she didn’t like the
show, but it turned out that
she was paralyzed with ex
citement. Or that’s what she
said.
As usual Elvis gave a few
kisses and a few scarfs to girls
who swarmed over the foot
light, but to one, he gave a
stern reminder.
Dropping the line in be
tween lyrics in a voice so soft
it only carried a few feet, he
said, “I told you not to come
around here again.”
I don’t know who she was,
but she wasn’t Patricia
Parker.

Ann-Margret’s new ring is a
dazzler!
Ann has had the 20-carat
diamond Roger gave her last
fall reset in a mounting which
surrounds it with dozens of
smaller stones (and none of
them so small at that).
If a spotlight hits it while
she’s on stage, the reflection
may blind half her audience.
Ann’s had the heart-shaped
diamond earrings Roger gave
her converted into a pendant
as radiant as the girl herself.
I saw Annie yesterday at
her favorite diamond mer
chant’s where she was picking
up her ring, and she’s never
looked more beautiful. She’s
completely recovered from
the effects of that terrible fall.

like a muscle cramp.
You have a history of a lot
of digestive disturbances and
since you’ve already had X
rays, I would presume that
you don't have any major
obstruction. Anyone who has
difficulty in swallowing cer
tainly must have a complete
medical examination. Hav
ing done that, the best ad
vice I can give you is to
change your diet completely.
Eliminate all milk and all
milk products, including
cheese, buttermilk or any
foods that are made from
milk, coffee, caffeinated or
decaffeinated, tea, do not
smoke, eliminate all alco
holic beverages if you use
them, try to eat a diet made
of very lean meat, such as
baked chicken, broiled lean
beef or broiled fish. Avoid
excess use of breads. You
can use some Jello, avoid
spicy foods, and if you re
spond well to this procedure.

GED exams scheduled
The G.E.D. exam will be
administered Friday and Satur
day at 8 a.m. in the Adult
Education office in Griffin.
Persons passing the two-day
test will be awarded a high
school diploma by the State of
Georgia.
later on you can add more
cereals to your diet.
If this regimen helps you
a great deal I would suspect
that you might have intoler
ance to some of these foods
and you’ll have to be careful
about which ones you use.
High on the list of aggravat
ing factors in your case may
well be milk, milk products
and coffee. I feel fairly con
fident that your problem is
not heart disease and that
most of it originates with
difficulties in your digestive
tract.
Stress and tension may
also be an important factor.
Try to minimize the amount
of daily stress you have.

Dad puts boyfriend
through third degree
By PAT and
MARILYN DAVIS
Copley News Service
Dear Pat and Marilyn:
I have this boyfriend and I
really like him. I’ve met his
mother and father and they
are the greatest. The only
problem is my parents. Jack
and I have dated for six
months, but every time he
comes to pick me up my fa
ther puts him through the
third degree. Where are you
going? Who will be there? Do
you have enough gas in your
car? By the way, when did
you have the brakes relined?
Have you had a ticket for
speeding lately?
The cincher came last
week when we were to drive
about 30 miles to a party.
Mom and Dad have friends in
the town where the party was
to be held. When Jack ar
rived, my father calmly said,
“We are driving down with
you. I don’t want two teen
agers on the road at night.”
With that, we all got into the
car and away we went.
Jack was not too happy and
I’ll lose him if my parents
keep up their surveillance. We
get in on time and try to follow
the rules. What can I say? We
are both 17.
Cindy
Dear Cindy:
Tell Mom and Dad that
Jack is on your “most
wanted” list and to please
give up the interrogation be
fore each date. If you follow
the house rules, Mom and Dad
should relax theirs.
Dear Pat and Marilyn:
I work in a large office and
have a problem. I am at
tracted to my boss. He is
about 39 and looks 29. He is the
kind of person everyone likes.
Don’t give me the advice
that this attraction is one
sided because I happen to
know it isn’t. He likes me and
has said so. I know if I gave
him a chance I could have
something going. The only
thing is — he is married and
has two children. I don’t want
to become involved in a hope
less affair. What should I do?

would probably be surprised
how determined your boss
would be to remain safely
married. Resign and find a
new job. You are too young to
waste your time.
Dear Pat and Marilyn:
I have been living with John
for a year. We are both over 21
and have considered that this
was strictly our business. My
parents eventually discovered
our arrangement and have
been very vocal about their
disapproval. John’s parents
feel that we are wrong and
that someone is bound to be
hurt.
We just don’t feel that a per
son should have to sign a piece
of paper to make it legal.
Should we decide to separate,
all we have to do is walk out.
The divorce rate is at an all
time high and I don’t want to
be a statistic. I want John to
be with me because he wants
to be not because he has to.
How can I convince every
one that what we are doing is
right for us? I haven’t seen
much to recommend mar
riage. Have you?
C.F.
Dear C.F.:
I must agree that the di
vorce rate is spiraling, but 1
do not agree that you have
discovered the solution. If
there is little to recommend
marriage, then there is even
less to recommend living to
gether. Until someone comes
up with a better answer, we’ll
have to stick with marriage.
Living together without mar
rying is like chasing without
catching.

Huge salt cellar
LONDON (UPI) - Scientists
are trying to prevent part of
the Tower of London from
collapsing because of salt
corrosion.
Stonework in the 700-year-old
tower is being attacked by
chloride salts absorbed 500
years ago, the scientists said.
Salt was valuable then and
kings turned part of the tower
into a huge salt celler.
