House approves
new wage floor
WASHINGTON (UPI) —
More than 2.6 million American
workers were virtually assured
today of getting their pay
raised to $2.20 an hour by July
1, 1974. Only a presidential veto
would block the increase.
The pay boost was in a bill
passed 287-130 by the House
Wednesday to increase the $1.60
an hour minimum wage to the
$2.20 level. Backers of the bill
said 2,618,000 private sector
workers covered by the law
earn less than the proposed
new minimum.
The measure was sent to the
Senate where Labor Secretary
Peter J. Brennan was sche
duled to testify today before a
subcommittee which is consid
ering a measure similar to the
House-passed bill. The Senate is
almost certain to approve at
least the $2.20 an hour level
Brennan testified before a
House committee on April 10,
1973 proposing an increase to
$2.30 an hour but spread over
three years. The administration
Small knife wounds
found on Getty’s son
LOS ANGELES (UPI) -
Police revealed today that two
small knife wounds were found
on the body of George F. Getty
11, eldest son of oil billionaire
J. Paul Getty, after he died
Wednesday at Queen of Angels
Hospital where he was regis
tered under a false name.
At first it was reported that
the 48-year-old Getty, executive
vice president of the Getty Oil
Co., had died after a sudden
illness, apparently of a cerebral
hemorrhage.
But Police Lt. E. Hernandez
said today that small knife
wounds, one on the chest and
another on the left leg, led
police to believe that he died
under “suspicious circumstan
ces.”
“We don’t know how they got
there, only that there are
wounds on the body,” Her
nandez said.
A team of detectives was
piecing together several con
flicting stories and were inter
viewing Mrs. Getty and other
family members at their Bel
Air home.
Police gave the following
sequence of reports:
Getty was taken to Queen of
the Angels Hospital at 2:40 a.m.
has not sent up a bill to back
that proposal but offered no
resistance to the House measu
re, backed by Democrats.
The bill would also raise the
$1.30 an hour farm minimum
wage to $2.20 over three years
and extend protection of the
law to 1.5 million household
domestic workers and 4.4
million local, state and federal
government employes, exclud
ing fire and policemen.
The key vote of the day was
rejection of a Republican
substitute measure, offered by
Rep. John Erlenbom, R-lIL,
which would have reached the
$2.20 level in two years instead
of one, and would have
permitted hiring of youths
under 18 at less than the
minimum wage. The Erlenborn
bill was defeated 218-199.
The new House measure
keeps overtime pay exemptions
applying to seasonal and
perishable goods workers.
Decision
on 1-485
due soon
ATLANTA (UPI) - The fate
of the controversial 1-485 through
Atlanta hinges on a decision ex
pected to be rendered this month
by U. S. Transportation Secre
tary Claude S. Brinegar.
Downing Musgrove, recently
appointed state transportation
commissioner, said Wednesday
the proposed interstate route has
been snagged in litigation since
1971, and Brinegar’s ruling on
the road’senvironmental impact
may settle the question.
“At this point we just want
a decision so we know where
we stand,” Musgrove said. The
Transportation Department
“has an obligation to help the
city ... to find our place in the
transportation plan for the
city.”

Wednesday by Dr. Kendrick
Smith, who registered Getty as
“George S. Davis” of North
Hollywood.
Hospital officials said the
man later identified as Getty
was suffering from a shallow
chest wound, possibly inflicted
by a knife, and another wound
on his left leg.
Getty died more than 12
hours later, at 3:40 p.m., at
which time the coroner’s office
notified police.
Members of the Getty family
told police that Getty had been
injured accidentally during a
barbecue at their home Tues
day night, but the wound at
first was thought to be slight.
Later they took him to the
hospital.
The coroner’s office said the
