“God is Supreme” is the title
of this week’s International
Sunday School lesson.
Background Scripture is
Exodus 20:3-6; Matthew 6:23-
34; James 4:7-6. The Memory
Selection is “Thou shalt have no
other gods before me” Exodus
20:3.
This layman likes the title of
this week’s lesson.
The dictionary tells us that
the word “supreme” means
greatest in power, authority and
rank. And though the word
“apex” does not appear any
where in this lesson, nor any
where in the Bible as we know,
added to the word perfection, it
describes God — “apex of
perfection."
The Memory Selection for this
lesson ties in perfectly with the
word “sovereign”. It tells us we
should “have no other gods”
than the supreme and apex of
perfection found in God
Almighty.
The message of this lesson is
best described in a beloved
hymn, “Trust and Obey.”

Brown to lay low
on revamp for now
Rep. Clayton Brown of Griffin
has decided to lay low for the
time being while a House Com
mittee studies what to do about
reapportionment.
He attended a meeting of the
House reapportionment com
mittee in Atlanta yesterday.
Rep. Hines Brantley, D-Metter,
is chairman.
The Griffin legislator said the
committee gave no guidelines
as to what course it would take
in recommending a revamp
plan to the full House.
Rep. Brown had hoped the
committee would give some
indication as to what it would
propose. Since there was none,
Brown said he would lay low for
the present.
He said he would keep an eye
on the June 25-26 committee
meeting in Atlanta.
The Griffin lawmaker learned
yesterday in Atlanta that the
Supreme Court’s ruling in the
case said 15 multi-member

House districts were not ac

did not deal with the other 17
multi-member House districts.
Spalding is in a district with
Fayette and part of Coweta not
mentioned by the court ruling.
But Rep. Brown said that the
Justice Department had deter
mined that none of the multi
member districts were ac
ceptable.
Brown said this left the
matter ambiguous.
It is Rep. Brown’s opinion
that the legislature should
require all districts to be single
member. He feels any other
course would only lead to more
court suits, rulings, and litiga
tion.
The Griffin lawmaker has
stated several times he hates to
see Spalding County divided by
the court order but he sees no
way around it.

city of Griffin as one House
District and the other parts of
Spalding, Fayette and part of
Coweta as another. But Rep.
Brown said he would sit on the
plan until there is a move in the
House committee or the House
for single member districts.
Rep. Brown asked Chairman
Brantley if he would like for
counties to submit single
member district plans.
The chairman said he would
accept any which were sub
mitted but did not indicate he
would ask for them.
The court’s ruling applies to
districts where election is by
majority, Rep. Brown said. The
elections in Georgia now are
under this principle.
However, Rep. Brown said he
inferred from the ruling that
election by plurality in multi
member districts would be
permitted. Under the plurality
plan, the candidates receiving
the highest number of votes
would be elected, regardless of
whether they polled a majority.
The 15 House districts which
Rep. Brown learned were not
acceptable to the Supreme
Court were:
62 — Clarke, Barrow and
Oconee counties.
65 — Troup, Coweta, Heard,
Meriwether.
74 — Lamar, Pike, Upson and
part of Butts.
76 — Bulloch and Screven.
77 — Jefferson, Burke, Mc-
Duffie, Richmond and Warren.
85, 86, 87 — Muscogee.
89—Bibb and Twiggs.
102 Bleckley, Dodge, Laurens,
Pulaski, Wilcox, Telfair.
114 — Baker, Dougherty, Lee,
Calhoun.
115 — Ben Hill, Crisp, Dooley,
Irwin, Turner, Worth, Coffee.
122 — Colquitt and Mitchell.
124 — Brooks, Echols, Lanier,
Lowndes.
128—Glynn.
