Garr’s homer
wins for Braves
SAN DIEGO (UPI) - Move
over Hank Aaron and Wilbur
Wood. Ralph Garr and Phil
Niekro want a piece of the
home run and knuckleball
action.
While Aaron’s the man the
Atlanta Braves have looked to
for power, Garr has been off to
a slow start. But he came up
with the big blow Sunday as
Atlanta managed a split of the
four-game series with the San
Diego Padres, posting a 6-1

Please.
Don’t turn it on till it’s full.
Electricity’s too good to waste.
If you make a habit of washing a few dishes at a
time, instead of a full day’s load, a lot of wasted
kilowatt-hours are going down the drain.
A dishwasher can be a real convenience for sav
ing time. But if you want to save on your electric
bill, too, operate your machine only when it’s full.
Once a day may be often enough, or perhaps twice.
You’ll use less electricity to run the dishwasher and
less to heat the water.
Here’s another good idea for economizing. Re
member that water heaters located near the points
of use conserve energy. Then water won’t have to
travel as far and lose heat along the way.
For spotless dishes, follow the manufacturer’s
advice on use. And to save on the cost of electricity,
put these and other tips to work. In a year s time
you might really clean up.

worse record than the Braves.
Trailing 1-0 in the eighth
inning and able to touch Steve
Arlin for only one hit, the
Braves loaded the bases on a
single by Johnny Oates and
walks to Darrell Evans and
Dusty Baker.
Garr quickly unloaded them
by nailing an Arlin slider about
10 feet over the barrier in right
field.
“That was beautiful,” Garr
said. “It’s been a trying year
for me. I haven’t been over .260
this year. It’s good to know I
did something to help the club
win. I know I’m doing the best
I can and I was just in the

“I get tired of hearing about

felt more than ready today if I
was needed. Usually there’s one
pitcher on a staff who gets all

it. If a guy is going good why
not get him out there.”
Brave manager Eddie Math

seems the more he (Niekro)

he said.
It was a tough loss for Arlin
(3-5). He didn’t allow a hit until

ST. LOUIS — St. Louis Cardinals’ Tim McCarver (15) rams
Chicago Cubs’ Paul Popovich in an attempt to break up a
double-play in the eighth inning of game Sunday. Cards’ Joe
Blomberg ‘immortalized 9
By MILTON RICHMAN
NEW YORK (UPI) — It
could only happen in America.
But there he was, big as life,
Ronnie Blomberg, a good
Jewish boy, suddenly “immor
talized” right alongside Joe
DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle .
.. and Pope Paul, too.
It all came to pass at Yankee
Stadium Sunday, and before
getting the details, you should
know some of the background.
Ronnie Blomberg, being used
almost exclusively against
right-handed pitchers now, is
ripping and slashing the ball at
an utterly frightening .410
figure. Last time anyone was
hitting in the .400 neighborhood
this late in the season was 1948,
the year Blomberg was born,
and Ted Williams and Stan
Musial were the ones who were
doing it.
What’s right with this picture?
Well if it were true, we’d be saving
28 billion, 560 million gallons of gas
every year.
How did we arrive at that figure?
Since we’re a nation of national
averages, we know the average car
uses about 735 gallons of gas a year.
The Beetle, 399*. Turn the eighty
five million average cars on the road
right now into Beetles, and it works

Anyway, it’s only natural that
the blue-eyed, blond-haired
Blomberg is being interviewed
a great deal, busting the ball as
he has been. During one of
these interviews a couple of his
teammates thought they heard
him say one of his ambitions is
to do so well for the Yankees
that one day maybe they’d
erect a monument to him out in
Centerfield.
These teammates of Blom
berg did some checking, and
they discovered, yes, that’s
exactly what Blomberg had
said.
If you should walk out to
Centerfield in Yankee Stadium
sometime you’ll see monuments
to Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and
Miller Huggins at the base of
the flagpole.
Up on the wall behind the
monuments are plaques with

Yankees; Ed Barrow, former
general manager of the club;
DiMaggio and Mantle. Also
Pope Paul VI, commemorating
the “Mass for Peace” he held
at Yankee Stadium Oct. 4,1965.
Prior to Sunday’s doublehead
er with the Detroit Tigers,
another likeness mysteriously
appeared on the Centerfield
wall.
It wasn’t a monument or a
plaque, merely a photo of
Blomberg taking a cut at the
ball, but look —you can’t have
everything.
When Blomberg heard about
it before the start of the
opener, he hurried to the top
step of the dugout to see for
himself.
He stared at the photo a few
minutes, not quite knowing how
out to a saving of 28,560,000,000
(give or take a few gallons).
Now we haven’t figured out all
the water and antifreeze that would
be saved with the Beetle's air-cooled
engine.
Nor can we compute the extra
parking space that would be around.
Not to mention all the money
people would be able to save in a
world of Volkswagens.
to take it, and then broke out in
a smile.
“Who did it?” he wanted to
know.
Nobody knew.
Eventually Blomberg learned
the two perpetrators were Mel
Stottlemyre and Fritz Peterson,
and he laughed.
“You upset about it?” some
one asked the leftrhanded
hitting 24-year-old first base
man.
“No,” he said. “I know they’re
only kidding. That doesn’t
change my feelings about it
though. I’d still like to do well
enough here so that they put a
monument out there for me
someday.”
Blomberg isn’t letting himself
get carried away with his
batting average, far and away
the best in the American
League right now.
But we know for sure that this is
no pipe dream. There already are
police car Beetles up in Ossining.
And a custom built, chauffeur-driven
Bug in I. A. And Volkswagen taxis
all over Honduras. And a Beetle that
herds cattle in Missouri.
So with gas prices going up and
rationing becoming a reality, the
Beetle never looked so good. In fact,
you might almost call it beautiful.
